Whats the problem with day 1 dlc

I have an entirely different perspective on DLC. To get it you have to be online and I stopped going online basically because the product wasn't worth the price. (Or putting up with the current attitudes of most people online.)

What I found out when stopped using online was that much of what I had paid for as DLC could no longer be accessed. I had no idea that not being connected would actually make some of my DLC just go away! Yet it does, and it's legal.

I have NO problem whatsoever with DLC that's just cosmetic. When it's something that adds to the actual game though, I really wish that they would put it on a disc because otherwise I can't use it, and even if I could download it I wouldn't pay for it since there is no gaurantee I would get to keep it if I couldn't be online anymore for some reason.

Personally I'm against day one DLC / pre-order bonuses (the DLC kind - stuff like a gift card or a free copy of portal 1 is fine). Like others have said, the problem isn't that the studio wanted to release some dlc to make extra money, but the fact that what they are using as dlc should already be in the game.

Some people argue that the stuff is pointless and therefore just don't buy it - as is the case with portal 2 - but I don't believe this is the right attitude. Sure, it may start out small but if we adopt that attitude companies will start cutting larger parts out of the completed game simply to ask us to pay for it later (in fact some have - see Resi 5s competitive multiplayer)

Also, other people argue that the stuff wouldn't have been in the game anyway so whats the use complaining? The problem is that the stuff quite possibly may have been in the game. Remember playing games a few years ago on the PS2 - remember completing a hard task and being rewarded with an unlockable in the form of an extra character / costume / level - these days this stuff is being used as day one DLC / preorder bonuses and all we get for completing the hard task is a trophy / achievement (which are nice and addictive admittedly but wouldn't it be better if we got both?)

Anyway this is just my opinion on the matter - everyone else is free to think what they want but I believe they are a bad habit in gaming (the DLC - not other people!).

With regular DLC the sentiment is that the devs have been working on the game still and they've added it just for you, the sentiment behind day 1 DLC seems to be that they wanted to make more money out of you so they took some stuff out of the original game and sold it seperately.

I am aware however that generally speaking DLC is only made to make more money but the difference is how the customer feels about it.

except you bought the game. All these alternative costumes and the like are more akin to also buying the shirt.

Furthermore, if you deem them worthless... then don't buy it.
Doesn't mean I won't condemn shameless exploitation. Besides, I didn't buy portal 2.

Doesn't matter when they made it or if it's in the disc or not. DLC is DLC, some people are ok with it, some aren't. Just remember your beloved developers are still greedy corporate types, or at least in the pocket of some of them.

that's a poor argument. the fact that it's there shows that the devs are planning on exploiting some poor sucker's gullibility/frustration/curiosity by charging him/her a completely disproportional sum of money for a few textures.
I'll repeat the full cost of the Day 1 DLC, £28.

depends. if it's PRICED DLC, then yes, it's wrong. for example, if they had held MvC3 back a month or so, we would have all the characters they released as DLC on day one for free. but instead, they decide to do the greedy thing and charge people day one. but if it's a patch or something, I see no real problem.
the main problem is that it's OBVIOUS that they could have put the day one DLC into the final game, but didn't, just to squeeze more cash out of people. it's blatantly obvious that the company's actions were motivated purely by greed, and that lessens people's opinions of said company. easy as that.

Well there is more than one type of DLC, there is the type which is basically core game content and then there is the type that is optional (very optional) extras like a hat and a few special items. The latter is fine on day one but for a company to release day 1 DLC of the core content variety... well you tell me what the difference is between that and them just taking a chunk of the game and making you pay extra for it? Shouldn't we get the whole game when we buy it?

Its fine if 6 months don't the line they release what amounts to an expansion pack as DLC, that just shows the the game was popular and warranted extra material, but that a whole other thing.

From what i heard, it's just some silly outfits/skins for those multiplayer droids. And i couldn't really care less about that.
If you really need your guy to look different that badly, you don't sound like the kind of person who minds paying 1.5 ? to do so.

I'm not familiar with what's going on with Portal right now. What is this DLC, and how much is it?
Valve has a Portal 2 that is exactly like the TF2 store, and people are crying about it. From what I've read, you can unlock all the stuff through gameplay. And even if you can't... it doesn't detract from the game. It's different colors/hats/emotes.

Nope. It was said in an interview that Capcom wanted Shuma in, but Marvel would only allow him as DLC.

Let's see I bought $300 worth of games this weekend on steam for $40, so I bought all the skins because I saved so much and am loving it.

Portal 2 doesn't have day 1 DLC.

It has some character skins and animations that you can buy, that add absolutely nothing to the game. You get the full single-player and co-op modes on purchase.

The only people banging on about Portal 2 day 1 DLC are those morons on Metacritic who've been rating it 0/10; other reasons include it being "4 hours long".

Even with knowing how to do every puzzle straight away, you would struggle to finish the singleplayer alone in 4 hours.

Its the idea that if you have DLC already made, just add it to the game. Don't try to cheat us.
That's the problem I have with day 1 dlc.
Last gen we would just be getting this stuff in the game no matter when or how much we spent on it.

I don't mind dlc as a concept but back in the day, this stuff would be released a while after the main game after the title has a chance to find success and after the developers have had a chance to hear/find what people may have found lacking. Day 1 dlc is just parts of the game pealed away to be sold later.

The real problem is when the original product has a questionable value. For example: MvC3 had 20 less characters than 2. There were a couple on the disc that were sold later for $5 each. Now if they bump the game up to the sizable roster MvC2 had, that game will cost another $100 in dlc.

Another prime example is LA Noir where the game will have 3 missing Cases (and keep in mind that there are only 22 in the base game and this is gameplay content, not a fancy gun or costume): one of these cases you get if you have the ps3 version but the other two are pre-order bonuses for two separate retailers. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect all of the content that's been made for a game when you're paying $60 on launch day no matter where you buy it from.

Having day 1 dlc is a sure fire way to make me NOT want a game at launch.

Personally i think DLC should come in the box as a one time use code, then more people would buy it brand new, and less would *****.

I'm ok with DLC that begins production after the main game though.
