Bioshock is quite strange actually, the story line is very deep and twisted. You are first shown to be unlikely then a sheep, then someone who was meant to be here. Its quite confusing luckily the game does it well.
yeah bioshock was pretty weird. the ghosts made it pretty screwed up. PLus the whole concept uf an underwater world.
bioshock gets my vote

It's worse when you come from a hard MMO to WoW, and realize the mistake...
Alas, all the hard MMO's are dead from either being too old (EverQuest) or having very very very bad launches (Vanguard)...
I took a break from the MMO I play, Final Fantasy XI, to give the WoW free trial a go... Like you said, "mistake" lol. After about day five I already had one of every race and every job to the max level for a free trial, which was 20. The game is way too easy, and everything looks the exact same. The funny thing was, I had only played it for about 2-3 hours each day.

WoW sucked so bad that I went right back into FFXI hardcore and found it that much more fun.

With that in mind, WoW is weird because it makes you appreciate other games more. If you hate one game, play WoW for 5 days and you'll wish you were playing the game you hated, haha!

Ok we know you don't like WoW, but at least 8 million people disagree with you. So just shut the fuck up.

Hover Bovver. You had to mow your lawn whilst avoiding your neighbour trying to get his mower back.
(Or anything by Jeff Minter)

JCB Digger. Bury the Monsters on an Island with your...JCB.

Gribbly's Day Out. Rescue the little Griblets with your flying one footed green creature.

Wicked : Fight off the Evil Tarot Minions with your Star whilst progressing through the Starsigns.

Wizball : Restore colour to the land whilst avoiding the Filth. With your cat.

Wizball - You're a wizard who transforms himself into a green ball with a face and along with your cat (who incidentally is also transformed into a green ball) must bounce around multi-tiered levels, shoot bad guys and collect the paint they drop to put colour back into the world.

There are several strange games in the world. Take "Mister Mosquito," for example, where you play as a mosquito who's daily routine includes driving a single family insane by constantly sucking on their body parts until he's filled his "blood quota
but what makes Mr. Mosquito strange is the voyeuristic sensibilities of the game. i remember there was one level where the teenage girl is sleeping while you are are trying to suck the blood from her inner thigh. there's a moment where she becomes restless and turns on her side, at this point i was actually able to evade her leg and fly between her leg creating an awkward camel toe closeup of an under age crotch.

where's chris hansen when you need him?

No Cho Aniki yet?

Also, in terms of "Why would you even do that to yourself", Mushihimesama, one of the most freakishly difficult bullet bukkake shooters ever.

I'm sure the world's strangest game is some Japanese monstrosity that I haven't played, but the Shin Megami Tensei games were all very "strange".

And although Mario has been completely integrated into today's gaming culture that we don't really think about it anymore, he's still a midget plumber who grows bigger by eating mushrooms and shoots fire when he touches flowers that grow out of floating blocks.

Harsh, man. In my longer essay I actually explained how so many people play it, but this thread doesn't seem to need anything like that. Especially not swears. Jeez.

I'll whatever-ordinal EarthBound. Fighting paintings and the game referring to itself in the third person pretty much trumps everything else.
Also, mushrooms growing out of the top of your head, homesickness, and colds are the types of status effects it gives you. Awesome.

Mine is Earthworm Jim, but I found it to be 'funny' strange because i was a fan of the TV series that followed it. But the strangest game to be would be all the Final Fantasy games, mainly because i never played a FF game. Even though i had my friends explain to me what the storyline was behind the game, i could just never understand it.

Can't remember what the hell it was called but you played a weasel and some other kind of animal trying to escape from an animal testing lab. The weasel still had electrodes in his head and tended to blow up once in a while.
I agree, that game was fun but so weird (and insanely controversial with the animal rights people). I can't think for the life of me what it was called though. Didn't you use your rabbit accomplice as the primary weapon?

Should we really be including Japanese games in our deliberations? Surely what we perceive as weirdness is just a difference in culture?
Ever played Parodius? I know it's a parody but still... fucked up.

It's an little flash game, but I gotta add it: Rose and Camilla. It's a game of Japanese origin (of course) where you literally have to ***** slap your way to your inheritance.

http://nigoro.jp/game/rosecamellia/rosecamellia.php

Oh, and for strange (but awesome beyond belief) games, I'd like to add anything by Kyle Gabler (http://www.experimentalgameplay.com/member.php?m=3) and On a Rainy Day (http://www.experimentalgameplay.com/game.php?g=5). I mean, you play as a stretchy tree made of human hands who must get tiny paper boats safely across a river. It's fantabulous.

And for mentioning ToeJam and Earl Kehan Wann, you get a forum cookie. *hands you your cookie of choice*
ToeJam and Earl....good times...good times.
