What's the worst injury you've sustained and the story behind it?

I am and always have been a very strong swimmer so the ocean, rivers, lakes and pools have never been a problem and are usually my first port of call when I go somewhere (I was also scouted for the Scottish Junior Swim team so as you can imagine I love the water).

I was swimming out near a reef when I went to Turkey whilst on a boat trip and the waves knocked me into and dragged me along the reef and I cracked 3 ribs, popped my shoulder out of place, nearly broke my ankle as well as my fingers and scraped my right eye's lense against coral (the eye was okay although I now have blurry vision when I close my other eye.) and managed to lose about half a pint of blood from the cuts from the coral by the time we got back to the mainland.

What about you guys?

A displaced fracture of my right shoulder. My arm was about 2 inches shorter that it normally was because the bone slid up so far.

It happened when I was riding a friend's bike down a hill. I got halfway down before realizing that I couldn't find the breaks (they were under the handles rather than forward of them, like I was used to), and I hit a gutter at the bottom, flipped over the handlebars, landed point down on my shoulder and rolled into a brick wall. Then the bike hit me.

Good times.

@ OP: Ouch...

Smacked my head hard against the edge of a concrete step I think (I can't actually remember) when I was like 4 leaving me with a nice scar above my left eyebrow. Either that or cutting open the big vein on my neck.

There was also a few years in high school where I found a way to suppress all pain, resulting in me becoming great at running through people in Rugby, but now my right shin and right wrist are permanently weakened.

Got very close to tearing my knee ligaments 4 months ago, doctor said I dodged a bullet. Still can't practice or anything though, so really sucks.

Ouch... I don't even wanna think about these injuries.

The worst I've had is a broken toe. No, not my big toe. My pinky. It seems trivial, but at the time it REALLY fucking hurt. Only time I ever screamed in pain.
Managed to break it by running up the stairs, at the top of which is an electrical socket. I kicked it. Not the best move. There was a lovely CRACK sound, too!

The only other one I've had was when some asshole at school (this was like 5 years ago) pushed me from behind and my spine clicked really loudly. Turned out he'd managed to bruise my spine & neck and I had to stay in hospital for a weekend. Most unpleasant.

I guess I've gotten off fairly lightly, though. Especially when reading the OP.

Mom, Dada and I were outside, I was playing with LEGO
Mother was gardening and my dad was taking off wood off his garage.
With a hammer my dad he hit to hard and the hammer hit off the wood into my skull...
Why hello hospital but my head was bleeding and cracked.
Got them brain damages.

I can't remember, but it was during school and I was walking across the cross walk during the winter.

I tripped and hit my knee cap, so hard I needed my best friend to carry me to my mom's car. We drove to the doctor only to find out I cracked my kneecap.

Now everytime I bend down I hear a sicking pop...:/

I broke a toe by walking into a bed post. Four toes went on one side, my little toe went on the other. Whenever I walked for a while after that I could feel the bone in my toe rubbing against one of the bones in my foot.
I also broke a finger playing basketball.

I had the tip of my middle finger cut off by a slamming door when I was 5.

I guess I should've of been more aware that I was annoying my sister as I was standing in her doorway.

My worst injury was actually a very long time ago, which is good, because I can't remember it all that well.

I think I was about 6 or 7, and I fell over face-first onto a metal climbing frame. Not sure how much blood I lost, but it was probably quite a lot, and I needed two layers of stitches in my face: one layer in the muscle, and the other to hold the skin together. Unsurprisingly, I still have the scars.

Wow, I feel lucky mine is so minor compared to others. All I've done is cut my finger with my katana while sharpening it. It bled for a long time (a deep clean cut+slow healing=lots of toilet paper with red stuff on it).
At least that is the worst I remember. If my mom is to be believed, I was born dead due to the umbilical cord being wrapped around my neck. I take whatever she says with a pinch of salt (never understood that saying but the applied meaning fits), however.

I sound like a little girl after reading some of these, but my brother dared me to bike on the ice when I was in grade eleven and I broke or fractured every bone in my right hand. I pray to God that's the worst I ever have to have.

About 5 years ago, I had a crash on my bmx, where I snapped my right collarbone in 2 places, displaced it from the inside joint, displaced my shoulder and broke the tip of the socket, and sustained mild whiplash. I don't remember much at all, but from what I'm told, I jumped the last jump in the set, and nose dived slightly, and clipped my front wheel on the back of the lander which caused me to pretty much headbutt the ground. the only bits I actually remember from the entire day, was launching off the kicker, then black, then slamming into the ground and sliding for a bit with the front of my shoulder pressing against the middle of my chest, and then sitting in emergency for 3 hours. Oh, and this was the day before my QCS test haha.

...luckily, I was wearing a helmet. saved my life plenty of times now.

Cracked (though not broken) elbow. It was the first and last time I ever skated without protective pads. Then again, it was also the last time I skated, like, ever.

Managed to break my foot after falling off my motorbike. Was wearing the correct boots and everything :p

But, when compared to other accidents involving motorbikes, I got lucky ^^

Not exactly an injury, more a very queer illness...
Had a paper-thin thigh bone. Completely hollow, doctor said he could see through it during the operations.
Went on crutches for 4 years, wheelchair for 3 months, a total of 4 operations, and now 14 more years of having sub-par leg muscles. Can't run more than 1km without extreme pain and I still have a small limp.
The worst part is that the hole is still partially there.

You wouldn't happen to be able to tell me this secret of pain suppresion would you?

OT: Nothing too serious, although I broke my arm from falling off a fireman's pole and landing on my head, thus somehow breaking my arm in first grade.
