The push for crappy games who's only draw is that they look pretty. Flooding the market with shit games is what caused the video game downfall of the 80s, and we may be heading there again soon.
It wasn't just shit games. There was no Internet to find game reviews, gamers were not the one's buying their games (it was parents), gaming advertisement was almost nonexistent. The result was the only games people were getting were the shit games and thus they quit playing in droves. Then huge investments by companies that predicted only growth led to their downfall.

The variety of game producing companies along with the Internet, the shifting gamer demographic, and the growing support from large companies towards Indie game development prevent something like the Video Game Crash from happening again.

I don't think I can name the worst thing to happen to gaming, no matter the temporal effects of anything it has all lead up to the glorious gaming age we have now.

Console Wars mainly, especially elitism.
Oh and the decline of good singleplayer stories to "shoot the shiny bloomy brown thing online"

Agreed on the Casual/Harcore genre splits. Gaming is gaming, simple as that. There shouldn't be any barriers.

I heard Jack Thompson was disbarred.

I'll agree with the online thing to an extent, but there are still some good single player games that have come out, like The Witcher...Neverwinter Nights 2...Dragon Age...anyone seeing a trend yet?

The worst thing to happen to gaming could be poor writing and poor voice acting--really takes the player out of the game world.

Console wars are as negligible as people arguing over their favorite soups; no one will be swayed and people will play what they want.

World of Warcraft and Cod4,WaW & probably MW2.

WoW, for making me waste £10 to find out I needed to grind for about a weeks worth of game time before I could do anything remotely fun. Cod 2 was excellent, because it worked, then it all just went downhill...Cod4,WaW for becoming 12 year old syndrome, mod controllers, hell hole. MW2 for milking the series.

Sonic, yeah he was good for the first five minutes of his life but all the crap that he's spawned. I think video gaming would be a hellof a lot better without him

Self-proclaimed "elite gamers" have always kinda annoyed me ¬_¬' I guess you could say it ties in with my disgust at being tagged a "hardcore gamer"

The increasingly popular mentality that all the challenging stuff in a game should be optional.

Second place is a tie between cinematic camera angles (I don't care how "epic" these make screenshots look, all they do when I'm actually playing is piss me off) and regnerating health.

Games becoming more multiplayer focused
People calling themselves "hardcore gamers" when they think COD4 is the best game ever and the word is a load of crap
The most popular and common games this gen mostly on 360 are all shooters with crappy stories (Except Halo's which is pretty well done) thanks to the ADD twelve year olds that wont buy anything else.
Regenerating health
Milking of franchises
