I remember when RPGs took like 100 hours to be finished and they were actually good 100 hours.

Now you barely get to 48 hours and it's like: Hey look, you beat the last boss. Congrats!!
Now...Dragon Age, a mere 40-50 hour RPG is considered "long".

Shit, I remember when 60 hours was the STANDARD length of RPGs.

There are no 4 hour RPGs, and that timeframe's an exaggeration, but there is definitely an issue with single player games becoming shorter, and multiplayer being the focus. Now I don't play multiplayer, but I've no issue with other people doing so, or a few games like CoD or Team Fortress 2 being multiplayer focused. However, it seems that online is being shoehorned in everywhere, often with splitscreen co-op suffering in the process, and multiplayer modes are being squeezed into games where it doesn't belong (Bioshock 2 anyone?), often with the result that the single player campaign deterioates.

Nothing bugs me more with shooters than the lack of split-screen, by which I mostly mean competetive but also coop to an extent. I don't own a 360 so I don't know what it's like but on PS3 the last shooter i found with it was borderlands (or maybe Modern Warfare) before that Resistance, a release title. Why? I have mates over, we want to have fun putting bullets in each other's brains, not pretending we're a lame-ass cover band or sit and stare at one guy doing it all. There's something just not right about speaking to a friend and going "Hey want to play a couple of rounds of Killzone 2?" "Yeah sure, let me just head home and boot it up."

It really doesn't help that I'm from Aus so online is just a bad idea unless you can control where you're connecting to (Like in TF2 for example).

Blame the internet really :)

The focus on multiplayer is the cheap way to release a game. The experience and gameplay is down to the player to make up things as they go along. Also needs the others across the net to do the same. If things get boring, throw in a map pack *yawn*

Wonder what would happen to mario galaxy if they tried to do split screen.

That said, it also takes ages longer to make games than it did back then. The models have to be amazingly high quality for every new area you go to while not looking the same, animations have to be done almost perfectly, everything needs to be done in voice overs, etc etc. and people have less patience these days.
Am I the only one thinking make a ff9/ffx looking game and cram as much gameplay into a bluray disk as possible, it would go on for weeks.

Probably has something to do with the perception on the part of companies that games are now services rather than products.

Multiplayer is a key component that is used to prolonge the games lifespan and community etc hence more attention is put on it than singleplayer. It goes back to when the Dreamcast got internet and then it took off with the Xbox and Xbox live, before consoles got internet you had to make a quality single player and a decent Multiplayer for splitscreen.

What do you expect from a fighting game? 4 hours sounds about right for arcade mode.

Plus, the online mode doesn't always suck! Case in point: Super Street Fighter 4 and BlazBlue.
BlazBlue's story mode took me longer than 4 hours. 10 at least. And I still haven't done the Score Attack challenge.

So yeah, not all fighting games! :3

The 4 hour RPG thing was a hyperbole, meant to emphasize the shrinking attention to story detail and quest length. Sorry if that confused anyone.

I didn't like Street Fighter 4. Felt like a waste of money to purchase pretty much the same mechanics for a game with buffed up graphics. Also, got bored with the multiplayer in no time. but thanks for the post.

Because Multiplayer is where the money's at. It's also where the idiots are and it's a known fact that idiots are the biggest percentage of consumers.

Except that's clearly not true. Bioware's RPGs have a crazy amount of story detail and while they're not as long (read: grindtastic) as some of the top down sprite RPGs of old, the worlds and story are arguably a lot more interesting, detailed and intriguing than before.

Case in point: Analyse the depth between Mass Effect Universe and the original Final Fantasy.

Beat 'em Ups have always been short, probably because there isn't much depth to them. You play them for too long and you'll get bored. Short beat 'em ups are really fun though, look at Turtles in Time.

FPS games focus on multiplayer. Simple as that. Let's face it, the majority of people buying the game would rather play competitive multiplayer than singleplayer.

This is why they should start making RPGs like Deus Ex - take a well established game engine like Unreal, reskin the graphics and add some power up options. Essentially the amount of work involved would be like making a mod. It really isn't necessary to make an engine from the ground up for an RPG.
