What's With All the Necro'd Threads Lately?

Yeah, for the past two days or so, I've seen an influx of threads made back in 2010 or so that are being necro'd. Why is this happening? Is there a ner-do-well doing this to just confuse people? Is the Escapist bugging out and just whipping dead threads to the first page?

My guess is it's random people surfing the web, coming across a link leading to a random topic on the forums. They make an account to throw in their two cents and end up necro-ing an old thread

What, didn't you get the memo? It's the zombie apocalypse breaking loose. Grab a gun and try not to get bitten!

It's been happening for a lot longer than 2 days. This recent influx has been going on for at least a couple of weeks now.

What's causing it? New users joining the site just to comment on a thread that they've come across from another website? Old users using the search bar and not noticing dates? I really don't know why there has been an increase, though.

I thought anything over page 3 was a Necro thread. At least in the Off Topic, considering how fast people move from topic to topic. >.>

This. I support this theory. It's more sound than the smart spam bots theory anyway. I've seen really old topics of the escapist on the Googles, so I'm not surprised that people would reply in those.

That's more like CPR really, IMO. Anything over a month old starts getting into Necromancy territory for me. Over three definitely.

But yeah, a lot of them seem to be new people, probably Googling for something, finding the thread and deciding to add their input. I find it especially jarring if the topic has completely run it's course (ie. problems long since solved)

Maybe we can become like a tech thread and make the OP add 'SOLVED' to the thread title after everything's said and done. It'd probably make the prospective new bloods go through the pages and be greeted with Escapism at its finest... or worst. Depending on the Forum naturally.

I've nearly posted in threads that I posted in back in 2010 until that niggling sense of Déjà vu kicks in and I Ctrl+F my username and find ages old posts I'd entirely forgotten I had made. Those threads should stay dead for good reason.

I once made chicken soup which had expired in 2009. Once being like... 3 weeks back. >.>

It tasted awful... but it didn't upset my stomach as badly as I'd thought it would. >_>

Simple really, the new people who joined the site just to post a comment do not check the date nor did they read the rule/ guideline to not necro an old thread.

I've noticed that too. Once I saw a post I made that I had absolutely no recollection of making, and I also had no idea why I wrote it. It was strange. I saw one necroed by a bot, which was also very strange.

I noticed that, too, but I am so necroing this thread in a few months. And I'm totally gonna punk everybody.

Just you wait.

I swear I just saw something creepy moving in the shadows of the R&P forums. It looked like a disembodied hand scratching its way up through the corpes of long since fallen threads. Shit!!! It's still there [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/528.254244-The-North-Korean-nuclear-crisis-is-Bushs-fault?page=2#16838528]!

*runs away*

Probably because people yelled at them to use the search bar, so they use the bar and bring back old threads.

Doesn't bug me really, since we can't complain about people not using the search bar and ***** when they necro a thread.

I don't mind necro'd threads, as long as the post which resurrected them actually had some kind of discussion value to it.

People who necro threads just to say "YEAAAH, ME TOO!" and add absolutely nothing else kinda piss me off.

Because with more dead people than ever more, now is the time to get into necromancy! Minions aplenty.

Although I don't mind someone bringing new discussion value, the best way to do that is generally making a new topic if the thread you're interested in is over a month old.

I did it once. I saw a topic posted under what I THOUGHT was "Latest News" but was actually a "Related Content" from years ago. They're presented in a similar fashion, except that Related Content is under articles & Latest News is in the same spot on the main page.

Ninja'd

I also have done it a couple of times. The problem is that when you read a feature there is a Related Content section on the bottom, which is neat, except sometimes they are several years old. I don't bother looking at dates to threads so I read it and go hmm... and then post.

If anything, maybe there needs to be a lock on any thread that exceeds 3 months without a new post.
