Guh, I don't know why there's been a huge influx of necro'd threads, but it's really annoying to deal with.

I hadn't noticed. But would you rather they create a new thread about the same topic?
Yes, actually. =P

If it's over a year old, you might as well make a new thread. Feel free to link the old thread in your OP to give it credit, but you'll just end up confusing people who've been quoted for something they can't even remember writing.

If you guys see Necro'd threads around, could you PM a Mod, or post it in the Moderation User Group? :<
I really have to disagree with you here, Spidermod. Even before I came here to the Escapist back in 2011, I've always been of the mind that necroing threads is not a bad thing if you actually have something useful to say on the topic and that it's always the better option than to create a new thread with the exact same topic and point. As an example, there's no need to add to flood of ME3 ending threads when there's already plenty of threads on said topic. Fear of necroing threads also further discourages use of the search bar anyways, and that imo is a bad thing.

I agree that it's confusing, what with the cry of "Use the search bar" that people usually get when putting up a repeat thread.

If the comment is genuinely constructive, it's not so bad. But again, it confuses people who posted over a year ago when they start getting quoted by people who don't yet realize it's a necro'd thread.

The reason I feel it's better to make a new thread (And just credit the old one in a link or something) is so people can approach the subject with a fresh perspective, instead of just recycling their old comments. Or something to that effect...

I noticed that, too, but I am so necroing this thread in a few months. And I'm totally gonna punk everybody.

Just you wait.

I will be sorely disappointed if this thread isn't necro'd sometime next year.
BOOM!! Ok, it wasn't quite a year, but I remembered this thread and then I had to do it. The joke has been made, and now we can carry on with our lives.

OT: The irony. The tiny, tiny, irony.

[small] I hope people get this and I don't get in trouble, it is OT...kinda [/small]

From April?

Too soon, should have waited till next year.
It could be a recurring theme of the site, every 6 months/ year someone comes along and necro's this thread.... Actually that's a terrible idea.

Every few months would be a terrible idea, yes, put it off for a year or two and it'd be less of a problem.

Having come from the days when "Use the search bar!" rang forever throughout the halls of this fine establishment, the idea that people are upset over necroposting is a bit... surreal.
I came in here to post this.
Oh those days were annoying-- but worse than that were the disclaimers. Oh! The disclaimers.

Now, before anybody complains, I used the search bar before posting this and nothing came up.

now that thats out of the way, how old are you guys?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Of course, even worse than the disclaimers were the people who grossly misused /thread.

I'm 12! /thread
/shudders

Now we just have to deal with the people who start the post with "So,"

So, I like a thing that no one else likes. Does that make you basically hitler?
Anytime you get annoyed with some forum trend, remember that there were no good old days: only nostalgia for youth.

As someone who only really browses Escapist a couple of times a week, I've never had a problem with Necro'd threads. Often, topics disappear off the front page of Off Topic quite quickly, and if they suddenly come back, even if its from the twilight depths of page 10 or so, and are genuinely interesting, then so what?

I agree with the 'me too!' and 'yeah!' type replies, they don't really do much more for the topic than bring it back around again... like 80's music... but you know what, its sure a hell of a lot better than clicking something you think is recent and seeing...

Necromancy is essential for the well-being of the forums. It helps encourage originality and keep reposts to a minimum.

Also, what's with the spellchecker?

I agree with both of you.
