I don't get it. People keep saying that its because of the situation in Libya yet when I research a little, we don't get that much oil from Libya. Most of ours come from places like Saudi Arabia and South America.

And now I'm hearing that gas prices might rise to $5 in the summer. I guess I should start fixing up my old bike.
First of all, feel free to ignore my first point if you wish. I only make this as an Englishman, and as a required rant for any thread where American word are used in the English language. It doesn't really matter anyway, but here goes. Gas is not petrol. The word for fuel that comes from oil, in English, is petrol. Gas, in the English language, is a state of matter, like liquid or solid, and usually refers to oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, etc. at room temperature. The USA has it wrong!

Okay, and now onto the main point, which is worth listening to. Petrol prices are set by a free market, and that market is dominated by OPEC. OPEC is basically a consortium of corporations and countries that have high amounts of oil produced, mainly Middle Eastern and North African countries, such as Libya. Libya produce roughly 1-2% of the oil used in the modern world now, and in fact not all types of oil are used for the same things. Some countries produce oil that is better for, say, making plastic, while other countries produce oil that's better for refining and using as petrol. Here in the UK we tend to mostly use North Sea oil for our fuel.

However, when there's any sort of threat to supplies anywhere, OPEC tends to drive prices right up. The reason for this? Mainly greed. They don't have to, but they see an excuse and use it to drive prices up to make more profit for their member countries/companies. This causes the global oil price to rise, which in turn increases the price of oil by-products, most noticeably, petrol. It really is that simple. Regardless of how much oil you get from Libya, prices will go up because it's a global market, dominated by one big group who act as a monopoly, and that affects everyone.

OPEC, a real-world example of a cartel that works and probably the only legal cartel that has global-reaching impacts.

Oh and it's a dirty cartel too, and one that drives the rest of the economy into the ground.
Of course, the demand side of things isn't helping much...

I recall predicting a new fuel crisis in America (to within 10 years) back when I was in 7th grade (97-98), solely on the premise of it being a time-limited market. I tried to get my parents to invest in some of the bigger Petrol companies, but of course, 7th grader logic has no weight at all (would you trust economic/investment advice from a 7th grader? I wouldn't).

At that time, the price per gallon was hovering around $1.31 or so where I lived. Small wonder the fuel-churning SUV market took off. Now that price has tripled in 10 years, with no end in sight.

It's lamentable that America didn't use any of its economic surplus from the turn of the millennium for alternative fuel R&D, or laying down more efficient mass-transit infrastructure during the growth.
How in the fuck can a SEVENTH GRADER see something like that coming, and yet no action be taken?
Well, the cop-out answers are obvious: Greed, opulence, and a lack of necessity.

Now America is effectively bankrupt today, and yet, still totally dependent on Gasoline...unbelievably ironic when one considers that this country was built on rails during the industrial revolution.

Stupid, prideful, pigheaded, shortsighted America...

I'm assuming you're American, in which case, you should see what the British have to pay for petrol. Most of us would kill a nun to pay the prices they do in America (cookie for reference).
Yeah, but in Britain in most cities walking or public transportation are actually valid options. Not so much in the US in most cities.
Except it's not a valid option for some individuals. I drive to college every day which is an hours drive away. There are no buses or trains that could take me there, yet at today's petrol prices, this journey costs me £15 a day... £15 X 4 = £60 a week, totalling £240 a month...

As a student I can only really work 20 hours a week netting me £400 a month. Since I pay rent, a loan and my phone bill. I have literally no money left. And that's forgetting the cost of maintaining and running a car.

So seriously, these petrol prices are fucking ridiculous. Petrol has doubled in price since I started driving 6 years ago... doubled!!
Maybe you should get a place closer to your school in that case.

Love to, but i'm stuck living with mum as I can't afford to move out. When I go to university next year I'll be able to with loans etc.

Also, I couldn't switch colleges either, as it's the closest one to me which does my course...

So if the petrol prices get any higher, I'm really going to struggle. I'm not alone, prices have gotten so high for petrol, food and utilities that everyone is feeling the pinch. I'm just glad I'm not trying to raise a family and run a house on minimum wage... It's really hard for those people yet our government is content to make promises of improvements and systematically make things worse for everyone.

Even without all the political instability in the east, we in England are getting it pretty bad considering...

In sweden, gas prices just hit 14 SEK/liter, which equals $8.30 per galleon. How about that.

It's an excuse for them to raise prices.

I've heard stuff ranging from some sort of delicate balance going on and that 2% tears everything to shit, to oil companies already selling nearly at a loss because of taxes.

None of that has really explained away the idea that they're just not letting a quality crisis go to waste.
