Maybe the wifes are the ones being considered here? Oh, wait. Males rule the world. I forget.
what if it worked both ways (ie the woman could have multiple husbands as well as the husband having multiple wives)
Somehow I feel like even if polygamy was legalized and people lightened up on accepting such relationships it would be more for the men with multiple wives scenario. Men with multiple wives that are consenting with the relationship would be seen more as strange. Why would you want to live up under so many wives? A woman with multiple husbands would probably be more widely seen as some kind of whore. Wow you really have that many husbands? Are you that much of a freak?

Sort of like how many people view older people marrying much younger spouses. For men it's just kinda a weird unless it's to the extreme. For women, damn what a cougar!

I'm not going to say polygamist relationships don't work, because I have seen a few cases that have, but I really don't feel there would be much affection as the number of spouses rises. The one person I personally knew who liked being in a polygamist relationship was pretty much a loner type. She wanted affection occasionally, but that was once in a blue moon. Often she enjoyed the presence of other wives because she could push off the emotional bonding needs of her kids and husband on the other wives and get back to her work. It always seemed a little messed up to me.

Plus I could imagine a relationship with more than two spouses could easily raise tensions. No doubt a couple or one spouse would become the favorite(s) which would lead to far less affection for the remainders.

One of the women sees another man, falls in love and marries him. Would this count as Polygamy or is it something else?
Well if it's polygamy when the man does it then surely it should be the same if a woman does it. But knowing our sexist culture there's probably another word for this or there'll be some rule in any religion / society that allows polygamy that it's "not allowed" for a woman to have multiple husbands or something. We're hypocrites.
I was more asking if you could have say 2 husbends and 3 wives in one family. I don't need to be reminded that women are thought of as lesser being then men.
Well that's kind of the answer. I'd assume no because women aren't allowed cool stuff.

You're forgetting about love. It's quite possible that the most desirable man falls in love with a less desirable woman.

Which also leads to the key problem with polygamy, you can fuck multiple people, but you can't love multiple people. At the same time.
Not forgetting, just not lending credence to it. Speaking from an evolutionary psychology perspective, love really doesn't factor into it. At least not a "love" that doesn't also coincide with the "best mate available".
