I really like the innovation and storylines in racing games. Each one of them is so unique and full of interesting stuff.

Like in this one racing game you drive fast cars, making laps around a racecourse. And in this other racing game you drive custom fast cars, making laps around a racetrack.
I recall this one game where you're an armored man shooting aliens, then there's another one where you're an armored man shooting aliens, but that one's all gray and brown.

Then there's this lovely game series about a guy shooting Russians in the desert and in the jungle. Oh, wait, that's not a game series? They're different games? Well, I'll be, you learn something new every day.

And the RPG where you play a 13 year old girly man who has to save the world from another girly man, and the RPG where the girly boy is 14, and then there's that shockingly innovative one where you play as a 15 year old girl!
Don't even get me started on its innovative turn based combat.

Yeah, you get the point, right, Junior?

I like you, don't call me junior though. Ok so you got the innovation point tied, but what about the storylines of racing games? At least in those space marine games they have wonderful storylines and settings. Such as with Mass Effect.

I enjoy racing games. The cars are cool, the speed is fun, and... well, it's actually hard to explain why I enjoy them. :p

But, what I looooove in certain racing games, is epic car/cop chases with great soundtracks. Need for Speed: Most Wanted was awesome, I played NFS: World, and definitely plan on getting the new Hot Pursuit (the first Hot Pursuit was also awesome).

For simulators, I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy.

Racing games primarily have dropped from multiplayer to online multiplayer like most FPS making them not fun to play with friends. Or they've just gotten so stupid with stylized with this punk shit it's actually very embarrassing to play. Even Burnout has gotten shitty and I loved that series, 2 was great, 3 was better Revenge was awesome...then Paradise came out and went down in flames.
I like Rally games but even they've become all crazy with these explosive menus with energy drinks and what not.

The only Racing game I have now is Burnout Revenge because the rest are just so meh. GT was level headed till they took 10 years to make a single fucking game. THough I'm not a fan of real driving, I like 200mph and explosions.

There's my reason.

I will never play a racing game alone. I personally own 3 racing games, 2 are absolute shit, and the last one is more of a "friends are over let's play this" kinda game.

I don't dislike all racing games, but as a rule they tend to bore me. I like Mario Kart, and any racing game with realistic destruction physics (Going 200 km/h into a concrete wall doesn't just dent the front of your vehicle, it turns your car into a crumpled mass), and the ability to screw around with friends. I have maybe 10 hours total logged in racing games, and that's every racing game I've ever played. I've easily accumulated over 300 hours in L4D2, 135 hours in Halo 3, and 60 hours in Red Dead Redemption (tried to get more, love the game, just never get around to playing it anymore... stupid job hunting). In total I probably have over 1500 hours in shooters alone, and most likely around 100 or so hours in platformers.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with racing games, they're just not my bag, as Mr. Powers would say. I fell out of liking them when they, like everything else, started getting ultra realistic with their controls, something that is not appealing to me in the slightest. If I have to go out and buy extra peripherals to be able to control a game with even the slightest bit of ease that is not the game for me.

The only part I really enjoy is playing dress-up with my car. I suck at racing games, I'm not a gear head, there's rarely any story or engaging aspect to it. It just doesn't do anything for me. I honestly can't conceive of or put myself in the mindset of someone who does. The only thing I can see is you like to have your skills tested in video games and not much else? Or you want to pretend you're a race car driver going 200mph when you're only allowed to 80 at best without getting pulled over IRL?

Now I enjoyed Twisted Metal, Mario Kart, and Burnout because you did stuff besides try to beat the other guy to the finish line. I get all the enjoyment out of pure racing that I get from playing tag with other grownups. Actually I get more from that because I haven't gotten to play tag in years and it's a good mold-breaking activity. Racing? Not really.

Well, sports don't really have story lines. Sports games are about winning and competition, mostly.
You could have a racing game with a story, some do. They're mostly 'rags-to-riches' stories like in most sports games.
Or you could have a racing game where you have to beat your rival in a big race to get the girl.
PS:
Mass Effect is amazing.

I love racing games, I loved the very bad game called Need for Speed ProStreet.
Yes, the cars handled like boats on land, but the tuning system was just perfect. I loved it.

Because they're simple and repetitive. In a racing game, you will always have one objective: get from point A to point B before the other guys do. And I'm sorry, but a game where that is the one and only objective just doesn't cut it: any other genre would get major negative points for only have one objective in each mission. Some games try to spice it up with actual chases and such, and that sometimes works, but then we have the other problem: I've never seen a racing game with a good story. Ever. If someone wants to point me to one, I'll be glad to check it out.

Basically, the only racing games I've enjoyed are mascot games like Crash Team Racing and Mario Kart, because they add things in to make it more than just a racing game. But as far as realistic racing is concerned, it's repetitive, simple, and boring.

Racing games are the games that show up on a console at launch because none of the good ones have been released. I played plenty of GT HD concept on the PS3 in 2006, but I'm not sure I could be bothered to play it now in 2010 with all the other games that have been released.

There's also the learning curve, Gran Turismo is fun, but it's not a pick up and play game. Split/Second on the other hand is a great pick up and play game, but it's hard to differentiate one racing game from another (unless it's ModNation Racers).
