Chowder has completely redeemed modern cartoons for me. Archer was pretty awesome too, but i dont think that it counts as a childrens cartoon.

Plus, Animaniacs taught me all the 50 U.S. states and capitols, all the U.S. presidents, and every country in the world.

What do cartoons these days teach kids?
What. Have. You. Done.

I've been stuck on watching all the different fragments of Animaniacs for the last two hours!

...

Incidentally:

EDIT: "We'll be right outside protecting you from the vicious viper who looms in the darkness and waits to do unspeakable horrible things to you while you innocently sleep. Good night!"
Oh, the good old days...

It's because cartoons are becoming stupider, they are being made for the simple minded, the farther in time we go the more simple minded things will become, good cartoons ended with Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry at least Tom and Jerry is still on in the mornings.
I'm sorry, but new Tom and Jerry pales terribly in comparison to old Tom and Jerry. If keep going down this road, I shall weep for our children.
Oh fuck no, not the new ones I am talking about the old ones they are on Cartoon Network at like 11:00 Central Time, nothing but the classics.

Chowder and adventure time are the two new cartoon shows i can stand
I don't really know why TV and cartoons have declined but i have my theories
Fear of lawsuits if kids learns something violent from TV
TV is becoming a substitute parent because of all the time spent watching it and is trying to teach children to do the right thing

networks need to bring back all the good shows like pinky and the brain, samurai jack, megasXLR, invader Zim and others

I will give credit to Pokemon which has been on the air for 10 years and still gives a big thumbs up to animal violence and shows no sign of stomping - congrats to Pokemon

I loved the Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show, Dexter's Laboratory, and Pinky and the Brain. The only good cartoons today are spongebob, Phineas and Ferb, and the syndicated invader zim.
I have notices the are style changing as well, everything is nice, round, and a bright colour.

Wow. All this smack talking of new shows I feel sorry for them Q-Q

Yeah, I'll admit that compared to cartoons of the past(I'm talking about mid 90's to mid 00's here) a lot of the newer stuff is lacking depth but there are some good shows out there. I for one really like the DC animated shows like Justice League, Batman:TAS, Batman Beyond and the feature length films they release. The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show is really good and actually stays true to the original Mirage comics and can surprise you with some really dark moments. Samurai Jack was PERFECT and showed that kids actually had attentions spans longer than 10 seconds and could enjoy a good story without being lead every step of the way. I actually remember one episode where there was no dialogue at all and that's a gutsy move to make for a kids show. t actually beat Simpsons for an award, SIMPSON! Anything made by MainFrame Entertainment was gold (Reboot, Beast Wars, Beast Machines and Shadow Planets). Megas XLR... enough said really, it was simple and fun and sometimes that's all you needed.

However, after looking through this thread I'm really surprised that Avatar(no, not the film with the space smurfs) wasn't mentioned more. Whenever I feel like modern cartoons are failing I just think of this show and just how much of a gem it was. Good characters, intelligent, EPIC story and some really beautiful animation. It wasn't afraid to use concepts from unfamiliar sources like Eastern spiritualism and presented them to children in a way they could understand without making them feel stupid.

Do you watch Chowder?
Heck yes, it's pretty much the only cartoon I'd still watch, ever since Avatar ran out.

Wish I could still watch Spongebob, but it's really taken a turn for the worse...

No, it has nothing to do with our age. It's just that most cartoons on TV these days kinda suck and when I watch the awesome originals (e.g Scooby-Doo, Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry) it shows how great they are compared to these new ones.

Not all of them are bad and the ones that are decent are nowhere as great as the ones we grew up with.

Samurai Jack anyone? as for good new shows, I'd say... huh? I guess I can't really name any, best from my childhood were Dexter's lab, Johnny Bravo, and the early Courage the Cowardly Dog. I never really watched Powerpuff Girls until recently after noticing all of the subtle innuendo (Like the two cat's licking eachother on Femm Fatale's wall, Reference to P*ssy licking by the way, since the character is most likely lesbian).

Here's my wife's favorites (followed by my own): Rugrats, Rocco's Modern Life, Digimon, Gargoyles, Darkwing Duck, Looney Tunes, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Phineas and Ferb, Kim Possible is actually really good (she says, I haven't seen much), old Hanna-Barbara stuff, Teen Titans, 90s Batman cartoon (not sure what series), Talespin, Ninja Turtles, and a lot of old Nickelodeon stuff.

My favorites over the years: The Tick, Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Ninja Turtles, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Gargoyles, Avatar, Phineas and Ferb, Animaniacs, and Looney Tunes. It may be worth noting that I didn't know our TV got cartoons until I was about 5, and we never had cable until I was 16 or so.

My wife keeps coming up with more cartoons that she likes/liked, so I've given up listing them. However, I do think that good newer cartoons are just as few and far between as older cartoons, we're just remembering the old ones that were great and forgetting the crap. In another decade all the 15 year olds of that time will be fondly remembering FlapJack and such.

The problem with future toons is they are homogenized, insubstantial, shallow and alienate kids with the complete opposite of what the good 90's-and-earlier toons did. Whatever is left of the "educational entertainment" in TV has become moneymilking overuse of popular mascots in a patronizing attempt at satisfying parental approval.

And don't get me started on Hannah Montana...

Yeah most child cartoons suck but there's been a rise of good quality adult cartoons.

A good example is 'Ugly Americans'. Great animation and some of the best humor I've seen in a cartoon. Not to mention I looks so bizarre but in a good way.

Two other promising adult cartoons are 'Sit down Shut up' and 'Neighbors from Hell.' Both shows have nice designs and animation and the from snippets I've seen in their commercials, their humor is quite good as well.

It's because they look down to children, not up. The old days had plenty of things children wouldn't get, but they kept them in anyway, and they were better for it.

Nowadays, everything is totally tailored to make sure that nothing that's too advanced for the kiddies gets in. Fuck that. How else are you going to learn?
This is probably one of the better answers on here, although I personally would also blame executive meddling, which often either forces creators to dumb down their cartoons (i.e. Invader Zim) or make the cartoons continue (despite its creator's intentions of ending the series) in order to keep milking the cash cow (i.e. Spongebob Squarepants).

And, as for favorites of mine: Tiny Toon Adventures, Tom & Jerry, Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM), Spongebob (up until the movie, that is. Everything since has been absolute trash), Samurai Pizza Cats (not truly a cartoon, per se, but I love the crap out of it anyway), Johnny Bravo, and Animaniacs.
