Sins of a Solar Empire.

It's just... agh... more addicting than civ for me.

Just take Civ in space, make it realtime, and make the action like all the best "big space battles" from movies mixed into one. You've got sins. It's freaking amazing.

FOR THE UNITY!

My friend keeps asking me to play that but I've never got around to it, is the gameplay similar to civ?
Similar, granted Culture isn't -as- potent and it's a lot more advanced in my opinion. I'm usually not as much of a fan of realtime strategy, best this manages to make it incredibly fun.

The three factions each have unique gameplay styles to separate themselves from one another. With my personal favorite The Advent being equivalent to Zerg early game before evolving into a more "Protoss" playstyle. A massive colonization rush is impeded at the beginning by most planets having defensive units surrounding them and occasionally research being required if you want to settle, say, a volcanic or ice planet. Space Pirates, the games equivalent of Barbarians are a genuine threat rather than a mere nuisance, and can be manipulated by placing bounties on other players, and finally the diplomacy system, though slower, has a ton of benefits you can gain from it. To the point that allying with another player can not only grant you perks from their faction (for example, I allied with TEC as advent, so they could provide "dual projects" with me that essentially amount to improving both of our fleet's shielding, speed, etc) but can turn you into a powerhouse against people going lone wolf.

Only problem I see is that it isn't as specific on "win" conditions, and the A.I. pretty much abandons an Alliance right then and there as soon as the last enemy isn't a threat. But overall, I highly recommend giving it a try.
I highly recommend giving it a try.
See RTS usually isn't my cup of tea, I like my strategy a bit slower and more thoughtful but without the unit hording that plagues many RTS's, hence why I enjoy Civ for it's thoughtful and well paced (turn based) gameplay, and the likes of Company of Heroes for it's faster and more deliberate gameplay styles.

I'm not really sure what my Game of the Year is to be honest with you, but one that I definitely think deserves honorable mention is the Pacific Rim video game.

The game itself is a pretty mediocre fighter title, but it's a surprisingly fun game for just couch co-op gaming. I think I had more fun just playing it with my room mate or my sister than I did with the game itself.

My definite game of the year pick would be The Stanley Parable, but that might end up topping more than a couple regular GOTY lists, so I'll go with Awesomenauts. Seriously, if you have any interest whatsoever in multiplayer games, you need to try out Awesomenauts. It is outstanding.
