I'd have to say that mine are Halo 3, Gears of War, and GTA IV. *WARNING*If you don't want to read the whole thing there's a short summary in the end.

Before Halo 3 came out I never had a Xbox, so I got Halo 1 and 2. I wanted to see what would garner universal praise of such games. I've been a huge fan of Bungie when they made Pathways into Darkness, Myth, and Marathon, but these Halo games were betrayal. I tried to like them but they were filled with bad level design (going thru similar corridors, getting lost, and enemy placement) and a very simple "let's kill these alien bastards!" storyline. In my infinite grace to Bungie, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. But Halo 3 was more of the same. At least the multiplayer was decent, until COD4 took over.

Gears of War, along with Bioshock were the reasons why I got a 360 in the first place. Gears looked very promising with its gritty theme, graphics, and gameplay. Hell, everyone was talking about it. So when I had my chance, I got it. I do have to admit the campaign was decent, but it had the most stiff protagonist and the same "let's kill these alien bastards!" storyline, all over again. I wasn't too dismayed until I got online, since this is the big draw to the game according to my friends and the [bold]internet[/bold]. After giving it ten hours I couldn't stand it anymore. It had such horrying bullet lag, that only if EVERYONE had a solid connection, would the game work the way it should. This causes the two assault rifles in the game to be next to useless, dumbing games to shotgun fest (or pick-ups you can get.)

By GTA IV, I was becoming skeptical of the franchise. It seemed to be always one step behind its competitors in the gameplay and story department (Scarface, the Godfather, and the Getaway were much better here.) Because they all had better combat mechanics and a story that didn't have over-the-top characters that make me want to roll my eyes. Where GTA shined was the technical scope of the game; huge environments, great music, and the little details. It made me feel as if Rockstar cared less of the gameplay and more about the world being made. Anyway, I decided to give GTA IV a cautious try. I was once again dissapointed. While they did fix up the combat a bit, the missions were more repetitive than before, the graphics felt like a glorified Xbox game, less character customization, very limited co-op, and a typical gangster story. After dealing with that I went to try out the online for kicks, and it was just awful. It seemed like they put together the online in a month, just to appeal to the new online shooter crowd. It is terribly broken. To list its faults would take all day.

SUMMARY- Halo 3: Boring Campaign and decent multiplayer. Gears: Decent campaign, HORRIBLE multiplayer. GTA IV: Boring Singleplayer, DISGUSTING multiplayer.

I'll second Gears and GTA:IV. Gears disappointed me after all the hype, and my disc died which didn't help haha. GTA:IV was amazing, but after about 2 weeks I took it out of my Xbox and it hasn't been back in...

As for my own disappointments, I'll have to say the Iron Man game. I know, I know, hear me out. I played the demo and thought it was decently fun, and the movie was so good I figured it might just break the trend and be an OK game. After reading some reviews and borrowing it from a friend... let's just say I died a little on the inside.

Duke Nukem: Forever. Nothing even comes close. I really don't even care how the game turns out.

I can already see this this turning into a "how much everybody hates Halo thread" and Ill be left with the task of defending it

as for most disappointing: I was really hyped about assassins creed but it was not nearly as good as i hoped it would be

Brawl, as I've discussed earlier. Though it's still a great new addition to not only the Wii, but the Smash Bros. franchise altogether, it really feels like it's lacking. For one reason the game disappointed me, it nerfed every character and every stage so everything is pretty much the exact same as the other. The Final Smashes look great, but they really shouldn't have made them like they are. I was honestly expecting something that appeared once every 10 or so matches and if you got it, it could turn the tide of the whole match. In actuality, though, it's something that appears 10 times PER match and either one-hit KO's everything in the screen (Sonic and Olimar prime examples), or does absolutely nothing (Game and Watch and Peach prime examples).

The voice acting for a number of characters is still horrible. I actually line-up both Sonic and Pit and kill them all hundreds at a time just because their voices are so unbearable. For example, every time you do a smash attack with Sonic, he says "GO!". Now, if he only did that occasionally, that'd be cool. But since that's his only way of dealing any decent damage, whenever someone plays as him, it's always "GO! GO! GO! GO! GO!..." Whenever you star-KO Pit, he does that god-awful "DUUUAAAHHHHHHHH" retarded scream, and occasionally says "I'm done for" when you knock him off the screen.

"You're too slooooooow!!"
"Come on, step it up!"
"GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! GO!"
"You're not ready yet."
"Go! Charizard!"

Now excuse me while I go and strangle the person next to me...

Uh, Need For Speed ProStreet? What a lump of crap. At least the rumor is that EA knows it too... They are going back to what made the series popular... Illegal street racing with police chasing you and indestructable cars... awesome.

The single player story of HALO 2-->HALO 3 was a major disappointment, simply because they were pushing out the "better" game so that everyone could enjoy the multiplayer. But, that's not really my biggest disappointment, as I only played HALO 3 at a friend's house.

I would have to say my biggest personal disappointment was in Dawn of War: Soulstorm. I enjoy the Dawn of War: Warhammer 40k RTS games thus far. When Soulstorm was announced I thought, "Hooray! Maybe they'll add the official Tyranids or something really cool!" ...nope. The Sisters of Battle are essentially cloned Space Marines with a contrived mechanic, and the Dark Eldar are simply a very "meh" race with some extremely ridiculous superpowers that are based around their own "third resource" mechanic. Ork WAAAGH! made sense, but "Faith" and ..."Torture Points" or whatever it is failed to impress me. The single-player is still a Risk clone, except there's even MORE to be concerned about as the action takes place across interconnecting planets. Overall, I'd say Soulstorm basically just added 2 races I'd never play in multiplayer.

Hmm, disappointments of the year..

Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction's lack of a multiplayer mode.

The ending of Assassins Creed.

Early days yet for me. Haven't nabbed a copy of MGS4 or indeed GTA IV.

I do not play Halo. But I do not hate it either. I'm not gong to join a PS3 bandwagon, because I'm not going to judge something I haven't played. So you'll get no Halo hate from me lukemdizzle. >.<

My biggest disappointments have been the shortening of single player mode, and episodic gaming. Its common now for single player to be under 10 hours, sometimes much less then that. I think CoD4 took me 6 hours, devil may cry 4 can be done in like 3 hours, and portal was a joke at 1 1/2 hours with no replay value. Multiplayer is fine and all that, but out of 10 multiplayer games, one might be good enough to spend more then a few hours online with.

Episodic gaming needs to die. Getting milked for money on an incomplete story line for a few hours of gameplay is not my idea of fun. Seeing more and more games going this way, if its not crappy short mini packs that don't have an ending (like HL2 ep1&2) its planed sequels (assassins creed, mass effect) I know story is a secondary element to a game, but its still a big enough part that getting an incomplete one is just wrong

Assassin's Creed. I usually don't try to get excited about game releases because I like to thoroughly analyze any game I play, but Assassin's Creed sounded awesome. Stealth, exploration, killing people sound great. But by the time I finished the game, I was ready to put a power drill to my head to try and get rid of the awful experience. It was fun for a few days, but after that it just became pointless and stale. It was a boring, boring game with a retarded plot and zero immersion. I know what Yahtzee said, and I disagree.

I hate Assassin's Creed now. It was the only game that really interested me from the moment I heard of it and it really let me down.

Dynasty Warriors 6... I believe broke me heart. They removed some great characters and put in some weird ones. The new combat system is really nice don't get me wrong, but the lack of campaigns and different weapon styles really ruined it. Mortal Kombat Armageddon was also sad. Love the characters choice and LOVE the make your own fighter, but with the removal of unique fatalities, it lost its charm quick.

The gaming industry at this time is really making me squirm. Any game that has less than 8 hours of fun is a large disappointments. CoD4 huge game with interesting game play and great new fps elements and plot. Finished the single player in about 2 hours (highest difficulty - too easy) and went into the multi to find that every round seemed to go the same way with camping being the main strategy and to many elitist players that really could learn to play with some skill. I only list CoD4 because it seems to get the most hype in my area as the best game out right now. Games are not meant to be perfect and as long as there is something to them that makes them fun it deserves a chance. A game like "Nox" is a great reference for the gaming developers of today. Released in 2000 it was a largely under the radar rpg with insanely difficult game play and over the top ridiculous plot line that is entertaining throughout the game. Another game would be the amazing point and click adventure game "Day of the Tentacle" run through Dos many years ago and made when Lucas Arts still had some clever ideas instead of running the same Star Wars games over and over until gamers want to puke.

I apologize for the length of this post and the rambling but I feel that the gaming industry needs to stop with the idea of "If it ain't broke don't fix it." Use your imagination and create a game thats different. Gamers will forgive you if the first time you make some mistakes if it means you fix them and the next game is amazing and clever.

My disapointment.

Master Chief might not be dead.
I do not hate Halo.
I just think it's time for Microsoft to stop milking it.

My disappointment? The FPS glut in general.

Now, ordinarily I just ignore games I don't like, and concentrate on the ones I do. I don't like FPS's, so I used to just not play them and let the people who do play them. Because that's just my personal taste, and I respect other people's opinions.

But I can't ignore the FPS genre anymore, because they are fucking EVERYWHERE. They are all American game companies make now. They are shoving out all the other genres that we used to have over here. I literally cannot think of a single A-list game company in the USA that doesn't make shooters, and I can think of several that make virtually nothing else (Valve, for instance). So I have to complain, because I can't find an enjoyable game over here.

So, I wind up playing Japanese games a lot, since at least they still make something besides shooters, but apparently, having anything good to say about Japanese games automatically makes you a weeaboo, so I'm caught between a rock and a hard place.

I think I have to offer Brawl as well. Y'know, Melee was tons of fun, but Brawl with its levels that actively try to kill you and the Death Ball, I didn't get into it as much. It's a fun party game but I'll always be going to someone else's house for Brawl.
