im mostly play as rangers or mages( or both, if the game lets you have two classes like in guild wars)
But in star wars:the old republic, i will most likely play as a bounty hunter or sith inquisiter.

Glass cannons with a trick up their sleeve. I don't give a fuck if they're comparatively fragile, just give me some hard hitting abilities with some stealth or traps to get away with and I'm set.

I usually will be a heavy magic oriented class, generally in high damage fashion. World of Warcraft? Mage. Dragon Age? Mage. In non-fantasy based games, it varies. In TF2 I like playing practically every class with the exception of scout, in the more modern-flavor FPS's, I like going as an engineer type character, who can repair, build, take out vehicles, etc.

Mage for me, preferably all-out damage with some support spells.

In FPS'es I prefer classes like Spy in TF2, then again, there isn't any other FPS with a class like that, so I'll say sniper.

That's when it hit me. His preferred class is a mage. Preferably one that has powerful offensive magic.
Upon reading your post, I actually had to make some contemplating to come up with an answer, it really got me thinking and I came to the conclusion that the same as you and your friend I like only certain types of classes, two of them actually.

My all time favorite class would be the Paladin! I just love a class that has special abilities against undead or demons, I love the Paladin from Diablo 2, Neverwinter Nights or the Seraphim from Sacred, which is almost the same thing.

But after playing this type class so extensively and vanquishing so many undead and demons, that I started developing a second love for the Necromancer/Warlock type of class which summons undead and demons to aid them.

It's quite ironically amusing for me when I think about it, especially that I couldn't decide which class I like the most, but I guess I love both of these classes, I love that Good vs Evil fight, where sometimes I like playing good and sometimes bad.

edited for mis-typos and idea changes .. as I said it really got me thinking :)
I like that your favorite classes are polar opposites. And I'm sure that you have an appreciation for the strengths and weaknesses of both making you much more dangerous as whichever you are playing as.

In my own post, I didn't go into my thought process for how I came to my own class preference, to save time and to avoid that 10 paragraph subject that people seem to avoid like the plague. Below is my reasoning.

The only MMO I ever played was FFXI. I started as a Red Mage because I wanted to be able to use a variety of magic and still use a sword. I actually enjoyed my Red Mage quite a lot. The variety allowed options in every encounter and I could fill many roles in a party and support the group in general. Eventually, I moved onto the advanced jobs of Dark Knight (heavy weapon and offensive magic), Paladin (heavy armor and healing magic), and Samurai (physical damage specializing in use of Weapon Skills). These were my favorite jobs in FFXI. Obviously I like magic, but want a sword in my hand, so really I'm a sword fighter that supplements my attacks with magic.

This wasn't enough to warrant a favorite class, because it was only one game and rather inconclusive in the end. So I thought about Dragon Age: Origins next. I started as a Warrior with two handed weapons, but I beat the game first as a Mage. Not just any Mage, but an Arcane Mage that fought like a tank.

Then, I realized that any time recently that I thought of a class that I want to play as in a group game, I look at tanking classes first. I volunteer for that role. Preferably one that has some healing magic so I can heal my own wounds to an extent (thus getting more hate and protecting the healer from hate). Really the FFXI Paladin was my favorite tank class. And when we were talking about Diablo 3, I was wondering if there is a heavy armored tank class in the game. When talking about SW:TOR I stated that I wanted to play as a Sith Warrior Juggernaut, so that I could tank if needed.

Even in roles that don't tank, I put my group first. Always trying to keep them alive first. I'll distract a monster, to buy my party time. Stay behind to ensure others escape and things like that. Rush in under gun fire to revive a fallen comrade. Generally, it's not important that I win, so much as WE win.

So, I am a tank.

Well, in WoW my preference is Rogue, In DA:O my prefered class was rogue, in Borderlands I chose Siren(because its ability to go invisible and run away:p). So I would say I prefer a stealth class so I can escape mobs/stealth through straight to the objective with minimal fighting.

Generally I favor close range over long ranged. I also favor being able to do many things well rather than one thing exceptionally well.

As examples: A rogue (or, to a lesser extent, a Bard) in D&D.
Bad Company 2: Shotgun, m1911, magnum ammunition and C4 (Giving me combat options against almost everything at the most likely engagement ranges).

I prefer healing to combat. I can't win at a fight, but I can help others do so. When I had some online on my PS3 and the Orange Box loaded, I'd play as a healer in TF2, when I wasn't firing nails at people I was following a teammate around healing him.

Wow, again healer. First class I caught on with was priest, and found healing to be my choice, haven't DPS'd w/ that priest yet, though I did make him shadow, though mostly since DPS as Holy sucks I've noticed

But anywho, I just prefer healing and supporting if I'm in a team setting

Is it alright to list different genre's OP?, since I enjoy different classes in different situations.

For Beat Em Ups I use the little ultra fast guys with high risk combo's, Makoto for SF3 (I've yet to sample her in SF4), Leon Rafale in Virtua Fighter, both are ultra fast with tiny health bars and move sets that you need to be ultra close to your opponent to pull off with long cool down animations, but so satisfying to get the hang of.

For shooty whizz bang fun I play a support role such as medic to heal teammates or sniper class to stop the other team obtaining objectives, I very rarely use the "tank" class and I never use a shotgun, its such a thuggish weapon.

For MMO's I guess if I played them I'd be a little dwarf running around with an Axe being awesome.

On WoW I tanked with my Paladin and enjoyed being able to take hits for my teammates, but recently I've been playing Champions of Norrath and have enjoyed my Mage, I've grown addicted to my powerful ice magic so when I get WoW back I'm making a Frost Mage.

Well, I like gadgets and stuff, and I usually want to stay out of direct combat, so I tend to pick support classes. Not healers, mind. I just want to do the debuffs, DOTting up, and generally make fighting really hard for the guys I'm fighting.

That's why I loved playing Spiritmaster in Aion so much I guess.

Too bad not many games have classes like that. Most just go with the generic tank/healer/dps classes.

This may be the reason behind why I'm playing as an Alchemist in a Swedish pen-and-paper RPG called EON. I can make grenades and stuff but I wouldn't even be able to hit a peasant in melee xD

I try to be the equivalent of Pichu in Smash Bros. Melee: my only specialty is moving fast and dying a lot. I have a good time doing it, though.

Ohhhh what classes we lean towards?

I admit I enjoy being the red mage in games more, the jack of all trades who balanced magic and physical skills with more leaning towards magic, but never excelled in either.
I like staying away from enemies to pick off from a distance as well as have a repertoire of nasty tricks to pull out.
I guess you can say....I play support. Especially if I can defend.

In Deus Ex, I always pick proficiency in hacking, pistols, lockpicking and swimming (yes I DO find it useful, Yahtzee :p)
In DragonAge: Origins, I'm a Magi.
In Mass Effect, my first class was Sentinel.
In Team Fortress 2, I usually play either Engineer or Heavy.
In Fallout 3 I first picked proficiency in Science, Small Arms and Speech.
In shooter games I like to stick to small arms like pistols.
In any other RPG and action game, I almost always load up in defensive skills before offensive, and even then the offensive skills are more or less built on precision rather than damage.

I may not hit hard, but I'll watch your back.

I like the jack of all trades class the best. In WoW druid was my favorite and in mass effect I am a sentinel. and in Warhammer I played a disciple of khaine.

when that's not available I like either a support class or a mage.
