Just because they started abusing the drug, doesn't mean they weren't having a helluva time when they were enjoying them responsibly. And just because drugs have the potential for abuse (what doesn't?) doesn't mean things you enjoy sober won't be even better under the effects of the right drug.

But you're right, there is something to be said for a life of sobriety.

Drugs may be fun, but they can lead to physiological addiction, psychological dependence, or damage to one's body. Not something I want to risk just so I can faff about.

Ultimately, I guess I don't want anything to fog up my perception of the world, and drugs do that quite stupendously. I want to be able to think clearly and lucidly, so I don't do something I will later regret. I do not condemn drug use, but I sure as hell don't condone it.

Well, I'm almost always on Dextroamphetamine, which is basically speed. It's actually quite interesting how anyone without ADD would get ridiculously high on the dose I take, but the same dose just makes me act normally.
Also, I like some kinds of alcohol. Not beer, though. I'm more partial to wine and this stuff called Johnny Bootlegger.
Gonna try pot sometime soon, but I've tried hookah smoking, and that's very relaxing.
