True, there's always something frustrating and sad about a good leader laid low by politics back home. And Cannae had a huge effect on Rome, from what I remember, it caused a change in their military structure and organization. That entire war is filled with genius tactics and maneuvers. It really changed, IMO how Rome's military did things.
Only enough to win the war. It kinda turned into a DOWN WITH CARTHAGE attitude, army structure remained the same and tactics changed due to the fact Scipio Africanus was leading them. The biggest change in Roman military strucure and organization came after the Marian reforms, which were good from a military standpoint but allowed people like Caesar and Pompey and Crassus to raise private armies, leading to the civil war and rise of the emperors.

I took Latin II plus a Roman Civ class at once, all with early republic emphasis. Kinda my area of specialty :p

Fall of Rome.
The world was up for grabs, and no one was budging, to see the kingdoms rise and fall would be astounding.

Or 1100-1500 Europe, that was one big turkey shoot.

Yeah my knowledge on the emperors is sketchy at best, I know bits and pieces but I don't have an expansive knowledge of them as I do the republic. It's all good history either way though, I have loved Roman history from the second I heard of em.

Have to go with World War 1.

19th century military tactics meet 20th century technology! I love researching the technological breakthroughs and (often hilariously bizarre) experimental weaponry and gear that resulted from this.

German A7V tank, anyone? http://historywarsweapons.com/wp-content/uploads/image/A7V1.jpg

This baby was nicknamed the "Rolling Fortress" by the British. It was so slow it would usually be found lagging way behind the infantry it was supposed to protect, and was quite prone to getting stuck on almost any kind of terrain. It was the only German WW1 tank to make it into production, and German tank divisions relied almost entirely on capturing British Mark IV and V tanks.

Mark V tank: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/db/British_Mark_V-star_Tank.jpg

And just for the hell of it, here's a few pics of the magnificent (but never mass-produced) Tsar tank of Russia!

It could happen! I never played the first one though. But I like history either way. Rome was just my first total war.

The native American wars of te west.

its just... romantic.
You mean the ones against the colonizing Europeans?

Oh yes natives fighting soldiers firing quicklime shots at them from a 24 lber howitzer while line infantry are impaling them with socket bayonets. Did I mention the levels of hygiene being still non existent? and the lack of actual medical care? and the preceding enslavement of the natives?

Oh yeah, totally romantic.

My personal favorite is the 1700s to the 1800s. Mostly because of Empire Total War.
well, at that point they were fighting Americans, and I mena more the mid west with the cowboys and such.

ANd besides, I find the idea of the Native Horsemen riding deftly across the fields romantic, but then again, i have an odd sense of romanticism.

besides, its not like any other war period mention didnt involve slavery of some kind and complete and bloody massacre.

I would say the American revolution, I love the dynamics of that war, one good army with little support, and one crappy one fighting for their home. It was anyone's game really, definitely one of the most balanced wars I've ever heard of.

I've always been fascinated with American colonial period and the American Revolution. It must have been like living on another planet. When they were able to survive, there was the French and Indian War in which the British forced out the French. And then a ragtag group of rebels defeated the British, the greatest military power on the planet. Was going to say "ragtag" was an exaggeration, but I believe by Valley Forge they had literally resorted to rags. The War of 1812 was boring as shit, though.

imma go ahead and say that time period around the Peloponnesian war, when alexander the great was alive. the Peloponnesian war in particular is pretty interesting. ancient greece is where most of my time travel fantasies take place. letting pericles know that a very large amount of ppl confined to a small space who are also being routinely exposed to foreign people is a recipe for disaster, telling the phoecian greek allies to MAN THEIR FUCKING POST and not run away to their hometown, stuff like that.

ya, i'm a nerd.
