Squall. The man starts out as an angsty ***** but by the end of the game he realizes the importance of comrades. He controls a flying school. He wears black leather and has a scar like a badass. Plus, the man can take a very sharp icicle to the chest and live to tell the tale. If that's not enough then here's a simple equation.
Squall uses a gunblade. Gunblades are awesome. Therefore, Squall is awesome.
On a final note Seifer would be awesome as well if he wasn't a complete tool.

I like Zidane actually, just because he seems really arrogant around women. It's entertaining...

oh yea. Some may think he looks goofy, but thats simply a ruse. While you are laughing at his freaky wardrobe, he gut you, burn you, and dance on your corps in a pool of blood while punching a kitten. That is how fucked up he is. My favourite is Kain from Final Fantasy IV. Troubled-past, forbidden-love, left-handed. He's my kind of guy. Plus he dressed really cool for a 16bit character and his class, Dragoon, sounds awesome.
Runner-up is Sabin from VI. He's really the most powerful character in the game. Give him two claws and two "double hit" accessories, and he gets eight hits per round. Plus he's so chill. Great guy.
Special mention goes to a few different characters.
-Any of the Cid characters. They are all cool.
-Tellah/Edward for giving us the greatest line in VG history. "You Spoony Bard!"
-Kefka. Pure, sociopathic, evil.
-Rikku. Reminds me of a Korean girl I once dated.

Celes, I've always found her to be a very compelling character.

My favorite is Cid from FFVII, for one (not guaranteed) line: "Cid gave birth to Seal" Funnier cause it's true, in my game that line actually appeared! And as a reference it's Aeris, NOT Aerith.
