Probably still Shadow of the Colossus. As I'm currently playing through the game AGAIN for the upteenth time. :p

Although I have played several really good games over the past five years. Final Fantasy IX, Valkyria Chronicles, Mass Effect series (except the ending), Super Meat Boy, Journey, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Portal 1 and 2, Team Fortress 2, and others I can't remember at the moment.

I feel inclined to say Sonic Generations, but that wasn't that long ago, so I will choose Bioshock 1 instead.

The atmosphere, the weapons, the upgrades and plasmids, the enemies, everything about this game was awesome.

Probably either the Syndicate remake, Human Revolution or The Lost and Damned.

The last five years?
Red Dead Redemption takes that award.
It just exceeded my expectations; I went in expecting a fun sandbox set in the Old West, but what I got was that and an impeccable story and characterization, to the point where I actually shed a few tears at the end. I'm a sucker for bittersweet endings.
In my opinion, I witnessed the birth of a classic, the same way kids in the 80s experienced Mario's advent.

Planescape Torment. Took me FOREVER to get into it because of the graphics, but once I did....no going back.
that's not from the last 5 years though
That'll teach me to not read posts thoroughly.

In that case it's the Witcher, the first one.

Hmmm, 5 years I'll have to go with Mass Effect or Skyrim, love both for different reasons. (Another couple of years back and might and magic: dark messiah would be a contender as well, love that games combat)

I only played it this year, so Fate/Stay Night. 2004 visual novel, only fan-translated into english in 2009.

5 years eh?

Hmmmm...

I play a lot of different genres, and they offer different experiences that are difficult to compare with each other.

I mean, I get a completely different kind of enjoyment from say, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 than I do from something like Journey.
You know i think im right in saying that Okami came to us just under 5 years ago.

5 years hmmm *checks release date* Valkyria Chronicles easy choice for me ive played loads of other great games but this one is head and shoulders over all the others. Second best game ever (for me obv).

Im not sure everyone is clouded by nostalgia though if you still play an old game you like regularly it must be because you really like it if you just think back and go yeah that was great then it could be nostalgia.
VC is definitely the most original game from the last 5 years.
However, I think I enjoyed Fallout 3 more. I definitely played it more.

I don't know if I can call it nostalgia (since I've been playing games since the 70s) but for me 2004 was the peak year for gaming: Katamari, Burnout Revenge, San Andreas - what a great year that was.

My favorite game is Bioshock, and even though it only came out in 2007 I get the most nostalgia from this one.

I loved it so much that I never played the second one in fear that it would ruin the feeling Bioshock gave me...you know how sequals are.
