As many of us know, game modding adds a lot to what might otherwise be an otherwise stagnant game. Good mods can create whole new dimensions to a game. So I ask you fellow Escapists. What are the mods that have most enhanced your experiences, big or small?

I'm going with the Nevada Skies mod in Fallout New Vegas. It doesn't seem like much, but changing the weather has a huge effect on immersion. Clear rolling skies, heavy fog, and even random rain and thunderstorms add a lot to the game. It even makes the nights darker so you can barely see, making traveling areas infested by Cazadors and other nasty critters more intense, and adds ambiance to areas like Freeside at night, which are pitch black and dilapidated, lit by only a few street lights. It's a simple change that adds so much.

The Underdark Saga in Oblivion. Massive quest mod.

New Vegas Bounties and Bounties 2 in, well, New Vegas. Fantastic quest chain with a decent story.

The Fall From Heaven 2 mod for Civilization IV. It's basically a total conversion into a fantasy setting. I've probably played this mod more than the base game, and I've played A LOT of Civ IV, so that's saying something. And there are even addition mods, like Fall Further for example, which add even more stuff to the game. The balance is pretty much borked, but I don't play online anyway, so it didn't bother me much. Unlike the base game, every race has a totally unique playstyle and really forces you to mix up your strategies. The sheer amount of content is staggering and the production values are really high. Basically, if you like Civ and you like fantasy, you have to check this mod out.

Child killing mod skyrim.

Sorry but MY GOD i hate those gob shite immortal shit bags they know you can't kill them so can mouth off at you left right and centre.

Anyone else in skyrim mouths off at me they get a fetching pair of ice lance tittys.

Or in the childs case they get a FUS ROH DAH off a mountain.

The Stanley Parable for Half-Life 2. Sure, there isn't much going for it on a technical or gameplay level, and it doesn't use any custom assets (except for some great voice work). But I can't think of a more clever and funny commentary on choices in games.

Runners up include I Hate Mountains for Left 4 Dead, Radiator 1-2 for Half-Life 2, Morrowind Graphics Extender for The Elder Scrolls III, and Suicide Blitz 2 for Left 4 Dead 2.

Probably Stainless Steel for Medieval 2. Extended the life of the game by hundreds of hours for me.

Some of the massive overhauls for STALKER are pretty impressive too.

Nehrim, if you can call it a mod...

Other than that, I LOVE realistic lighting in Skyrim. It gives the whole game so much more atmosphere, no matter where you are and when you are there.

Its a pity there aren't any Oblivion Aylied ruin style traps in Skyrim, otherwise you could just stand in front of one and spawn a child of choice on it again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and...
What do you mein by Aylied ruin style traps? You mean the lifting floors? Because they are in Skyrim, just incredibly rare.

OT: I haven't been using mods for that long, and none to add quests etc yet. So currently Hypothermia mod wins. Makes navigating Skyrim's snowier parts far more dangerous.

Mechwarrior: Living Legends
I was rather starved for a new mechwarrior game and then a mod comes out putting battlemechs in the highest fidelity they've ever been in. Hell of a lot of fun and it looked awesome.

Probably "The Nameless Mod" for Deus Ex. It's basically more Deus Ex but not Deus Ex... if that makes sense... JUST PLAY THE DAMN MOD!

Sounds like a good idea for a mod. A ruin completely full of those style of traps with a bounty of treasure at the end. You don't necessarily have to explore it though. It could be like Portal in Skyrim but without the Portals and much more deadly. :D

Favourite mod? Synergy for Half-Life 2. Love it to bits. Too bad no one really plays it now.
:(
Oh and Empires was pretty fun too. Also Trouble in Terrorist Town *evilgrin*.

I don't generally care for mods. Usually I don't like the trouble of, browsing and searching for certain stuff or whatever sounds cool, then you have to try them out, see if they have some issues being used simultaneously, there's often plenty of bugs, sometimes even quest-breaking or at least that cause some problems. Textures are incorrect or missing. Plenty of immersion-breaking stuff. Balance-breaking stuff, and so on... All that for a game that is already a finished product. That's another part that bothers me about mods; they often offer something that wasn't included, or supposed to be in the original.

Some mods are great though. Like the competitive mod for UT2004. Once you have it, you can't go without it. The same goes for the community-made patch/mod for Elasto Mania.

If I use mods, they're something that fix an annoying bug, add customization options or clearly improve the graphics/sounds without bugs. Huge mods are something to stray away from though. Might be interesting at first, but after playing for a while there might well be something that completely breaks the game with imbalance, bugs, glitches and so on.

The mod OP mentions sounds promising.

The Post-Apocalypse Total Conversion for Dwarf Fortress.
Oh no! Your vault dwellers ran out of bullets shooting deathclaws! They're getting torn apart by supermutants with supersledges and the ghoul traders aren't doing anyting! Oh wait! You still have minecarts! Load them with magma and fire them at the bandits!

Third Age [http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-total-war] (Medieval 2) would have to be up there, along with Project Reality [http://www.moddb.com/mods/project-reality] (BF2) and Modern Combat [http://www.moddb.com/mods/company-of-heroes-modern-combat] (CoH).

There's too many good ones to pick one. Still, I haven't had more fun with any mod than Hidden Source so I'll stick with that.

Skip the Fade mod for Dragon Age Origins.

Does what it says on the tin, skips the fade and gives you all the stats you'd normally pick up. Though there still are the moments with you're companions in the fade, but those were pretty sweet so it's cool.
