Im just interested in what you guys think as this discussion has been really prominant with me and my friends recently. To get the ball rolling I have to say mine has to be The Legend of Zelda, you may say thats a highly obvious choice or you may disagree with me but hell I have been playing it since I was young and its provided years of entertainment.
So what about you guys?

I forgot to mention that it was a really toss up between LoZ and the Metal Gear games, and actually I probably enjoy them a little bit more than LoZ :/

For me, maybe the Jak and Daxter series or Timesplitters. They were great games, though I'd be lying if I said nostalgia had nothing to do with it; I grew up with those games.

Sonic. It was my first game ever. I loved it when I was 3 and love it more today(nostalgia helps). It is really hard to pin down why I liked the game so much. I just do. It may be the fact that I like the adrenaline rush that comes with going that quickly from left to right.

Close second is Devil May Cry.

I'd probably go with the Metroid series. I wasn't wild about Hunters or Other M but that's two games out of a series of what...like ten games?

I love the isolation and atmosphere, the exploration and adventure, the scifi settings. Such a great series.

It's kind of hard for me to think of a number two favorite.

Mario. I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this, but fuck those people. It's still fun, even after all these years. I especially enjoy the RPGs, from Legend of the Seven Stars, to the Paper Mario series, to the Mario and Luigi games.

Tie for Second: Zelda and Assassin's Creed. These two deliver grand adventures, and are great to play.

Zelda is high on my list. seriosly I have every game linked to Zelda( pun intended) that ever came out for the game-boy. Worms rubbed me in the right place aswell but I have to say:
As a massive nerd and geek aswell I have to say that neverwinternights is my best series ever.
I played nwn1 untill my CD crashed and now I'm hocked to NWN2!

Silent Hill (though I should specify 1-4).
I have many reasons - I love horror, and few do horror as well as Silent Hill. The games are scary, but are great in so many other regards. The atmosphere is amazing. The isolation and loneliness of being alone in a town is creepy, yet strangely inviting. They have amazing stories, with characters I can genuinely empathize with. The soundtracks are great too - Akira Yamaoka is one of my favourite artists. There is just so much thought put into the games - so much to understand, so much to see and do. I still learn new things on each play through.
I discovered Silent Hill at a good time in my life, and I think I associate that feeling of peace with playing the games.
I also met my girlfriend through a mutual love of the series.

i have to agree with you the Legend of Zelda game i find fun. the one exception is wind waker. the one part that killed the game to me is the hunt for the triforce pieces. but the good part is it gave motivation to beat the oracle games and links awakening for the first time. Then ran out of zelda games and started playing pokemon crystal. to my surprise play a pokemon game is more fun then that crappy scavenger hunt.

Yeah that part in wind waker was a pain, especially since you had to find the maps, pay like 693 ruppee's to get each one deciphered and then finally get one shard of one piece of the triforce. And I also still enjoy pokemon games to some degree at least.

Video games making a late entry into my life, I really don't have much nostalgia for games like Zelda, mario, metroid, and such classics (though, I appreciate them and see why they are classics).
So with that disclaimer aside, I am going to say "Assassin's creed". I haven't seen a gaming franchise that uses squeals so well, and I have yet to grow tired with jumping over ancient rooftops.

Sonic was the first game I ever completed at the age of 2! I didnt really comprehend it back then it was just bright colours, robots and animals but it still has a small role in my gaming life. As for DMC I do love the series and Dante is one of the most badass protagonists I have ever seen in a game.

Oh wow, this is a tough question...

Command & Conquer, Assassin's Creed, Smash Bros... I could probably go on, but those are the first three to come to mind.

C&C because it's always been a good and reliable strategy series (excluding Tiberian Twilight) to follow. Whether you want the dark and futuristic Tiberian world or the goofy, alternate-reality Red Alert world, it's always good fun. My favourite game of all time is Red Alert 3, but RA2 and Tiberian Sun both hold a lot of my childhood.

Assassin's Creed is obviously fairly new, but they're a series of games that make me actually feel like an assassin. AC1 gave us a lot of great concepts and then AC2 perfected it with an amazing story, a loss of the tedious parts of gameplay, interesting characters, and a lot of stuff to do. I was immersed in AC2 from start to finish. AC Brotherhood was more of a step to the side. I beat it, but I had to retire it for a week because it pissed me off so much.

And Smash Bros... Man, I think the original was the second most played game on my N64 just short of Perfect Dark. I never owned a Gamecube but when I got my hands on Melee in the future I became great at it. And then when Brawl came out it's about the only multiplayer game I own now. All 3 games in the series are good in their own way and they all play differently. For example, I find the first one is best played with 4 people, Melee is best played 1-on-1, and Brawl is best played with 3 people.
