Personally I'm torn between Disgaea 1, the Breath of Fire Series and the Suikoden Series (well Suikoden 1 & 2 the rest kinda went meh IMO) I also love Vandal Hearts (just the first one, 2 wasn't as good).

All of the above games I have played through god knows how many times and I love every minute of them. Is it the story? The gameplay? The graphics? The use of sprites?

All of the above.

So I ask you fellow escapists, what's your favourite RPG? Why?

Fallout 2. For seamlessly taking me from shooting super mutants in the middle of nowhere to playing chess with a radscorpion, to shooting a porno movie, to shooting up 3 mafia controlled casinos and turning a gambler's town into a ghost town, to navigating a super tanker in the middle of the ocean. You cannot beat this game.

Planescape: Torment, followed by Arcanum. Both had crappy combat, but the story/setting of the former and the character diversity of the latter made up for that in spades.

Well all the ones that you've listed are JRPGs. At least I assume they are, because I've never heard of them.

Anyway, I'd say that JRPGs and WRPGs are different enough to warrant being a completely different genre, and I'd specify if theres a particular style of RPG that you want to discuss in this thread.

Anyway, my favourite RPGs is Planescape: Torment. No other game I've played comes close to its storytelling, plot and depth. Truly a great RPG.

Fair enough point, but WRPGs & JRPGs are still both Role Playing Games at their core, therefore my thread is still valid and doesn't need to be anymore specific ^^

Fair enough, it is your thread after all.

I was just saying what I thought would be a better idea.

I thought this was about the weapon RPGs. So i'm a tool.
I really enjoyed pokemon when i was 11, and that was a pretty solid RPG. But now I'll say Fallout (series), and persona 3. Persona is the fucking shit/

Chronoooooo Triggerrrrrrr! The only JRPG I've liked, ever (although I just bought Golden Sun for cheap-ola and that may become Number 2 when I get around to playing it).

Breath of Fire 3
Chrono Trigger
Legend of Dragoon
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Planescape Torment
Fallout

Ugh so many good ones. Just makes me sad no new RPG's could ever reach the same status as some of these.

Since I have only played Fallout 1 and 2, I will have to say Fallout 1.

I don't know but I didn't felt that I was really sucked into Fallout 2 like I was in Fallout 1. Sure Fallout 2 got more weapons, armor and bigger world but I never felt the atmoshpere in it. Which is rather weird because Fallout 1 and 2 is almost the same game though Fallout 2 got more "candy".
