Impossible Creatures, one of my very first pc games and RTS' during my childhood. God I loved combining animals to create freakish mutants to battle it out with other mutants. :)

One thing A LOT OF PEOPLE in the community will agree with me is the following: C&C games before EA got their hands on them. C&C 3 and Kane's Wrath was fine, don't get me wrong, but story-wise, Tib Sun and it's expansion Firestorm kicked ass. Red Alert 2 was waaaaaay better than Red Alert 3. And one more game I loved: Emperor Battle for Dune. Westwood were amazing rts developers, I hate what EA did with the franchise now.

The Total war series is one of the best of all time. Thousands of tiny men kicking the living shit out of each other at your command. If we're going a little bit more futurey then (THE FIRST AND THE FIRST ONLY) Supreme Commander rules the RTS worlds of laz0s and robots. I also play and adore WIC, COH and Sins of a Solar Empire. Which I thought was a bit of an overlooked gem.

This actually leads me onto something I meant to bring up, why isn't there a proper RTS community here on the Escapist? And I don't mean that starcraft/red alert crap.

Does Civilization IV count? That game just eats up time. Plus, I'm a history nerd, so it fits my interests very well.
This. This. This. I was actually complete novice to the Civ series so the fourth was the first one I played and it blew my fucking mind.

I'm torn between Supreme Commander 1 and 2, the second game added a lot of cool stuff but skimped on many things that made SupCom 1 great (a lot of controls and visual scale, to be exact)

Best gameplay? Company of Heroes, just before they released the first expansion. Epic. Just epic.

I also recommend to try some of the Total War games, though they are not RTS, but they add a totally new dimension to strategy games.
What games do they play like? I've been looking at Rome, but would like to know what they play like before I get them.

Anyways, I'd have to say Civ IV, the Rise of Nations series, and World in Conflict are my top 3.

Homeworld 2, Red Alert, Dungeon Keeper 2, Company of Heroes, Age of Empires 2, Starcraft, Starcraft 2 (of course, lol), Dawn of War 1&2, Warcraft 3, Medieval 2 and Empire Total Wars.

I think Homeworld 2, Starcraft 2 and Empire Total War are pretty much my favourites there. Warcraft was too bitty and penalised you for having an army, and I never got into the multiplayer for that reason, and Dawn of War wasn't really my sort of RTS. The others were all pretty damn good through and through.

Dawn of war: Dark crusade, by a mile. Just love everything about that game...except the necrons. They can go die in a hole.

Total war games Are rts games but you dont build bases or train troops and stuff
you command your troops and you can do all the different tactics like flanking and things
I don't know of any other games it plays like other than Warhammer battlemarch which is a clone of Total war

Star Wars: The Gungan Frontier, LOOK IT UP IT IS JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But in all seriousness, I'm gonna agree with half of the people on this thread and say Age of Empires 2. Another one that I actually really liked was Tom Clancy's Endwar, I thought the voice controls and interface actually worked really well, and 4v4 multiplayer is sick.
