Red Alert 2
Dawn of War
Rome; Total War

There is also Achron coming out soon too, which looks amazing and could be the most genius RTS I've ever seen.

I'm surprised people are saying Soulstrom is good. From what I'd heard, it was fairly terrible.

Total war games Are rts games but you dont build bases or train troops and stuff
you command your troops and you can do all the different tactics like flanking and things
I don't know of any other games it plays like other than Warhammer battlemarch which is a clone of Total war
Ahh, so more of a real-time tactics type game, okay. Thanks for the info! Have a cookie

I'm amazed by the distinct lack of Company of Heroes in this thread. Passing nods only?!

CoH, Age of Empires II, Tiberian Sun, Total War Series.

Well, Rise of Nations always held a special place in my heart, and the same goes for AOE 2. From the latest ones I love Starcraft II, I have been playing it a lot later.

To recommend, I say that Dawn of War Soulstorm deserves a look, same goes for company of heroes.

I also recommend to try some of the Total War games, though they are not RTS, but they add a totally new dimension to strategy games.
Skip Soulstorm and Get Dark Crusade. Much better package.

And Total War Games are famous for their fantastic mods.

I keep hearing a lot about the Total War series, but i played shogun total war, and it didnt appeal to me at all.
Shogun is what all the hardcore TW fans will recommend, but the best games in terms of modding and gameplay are Rome Total War, and Medieval 2 Total War.

What games do they play like? I've been looking at Rome, but would like to know what they play like before I get them.

Anyways, I'd have to say Civ IV, the Rise of Nations series, and World in Conflict are my top 3.
This was taken from the Rome Total War mod Roma Surrectum. This is an example of the gameplay you would experience.
Its one part combat RTS style, one part watered down Civilization.

Good suggestion but for single player Dark Crusade was much better: more variety of races that might occupy a given battlefield. Soulstorm should've been better but each campaign was very similar.

Three posts in a row?

My favorite RTS is Supreme Commander (and Forged Alliance). Wonderfully created game.

age of empires 2 for me: great gameplay, lots of civilizations that play differently, really good atmosphere and graphics and one of the simplest map editors i've ever used. You really can't go wrong with it.

I found it again last week and haven't played anything since: it's way too addictive

I've recently dug up an old gem called Beasts & Bumpkins.
... Beasts & Bumpkins?
It's an old RTS/Sim game set in the classic medieval fantasy setting. You basically run villages to meet certain goals.

It's fast paced and at times difficult, but is a lighthearted and humorous game.

Rise of Nations - So polished and fun.
Supreme Commander 1 or 2 - Zooming all the way out. Every RTS should do this.
Total Annihilation - Not the first RTS I ever played but the first I loved.
Ground Control 2 - Great graphics and the core gameplay of manoeuvring and using secondary modes felt genuinely intuitive and sensical tactics.

I don't like RTS like Warcraft 3 where the core gameplay seemed to come down to:
focus fire, focus fire, dance dance! Run away the unit your enemy is focus firing on! Refocus fire another unit as that one is getting out of range! Bring back the unit which is getting focus fired on!

Dawn of war: Dark crusade, by a mile. Just love everything about that game...except the necrons. They can go die in a hole.
What's wrong with the Necrons?

Is it that they only need power?

Or that all their units are heavy units?

Or is it because they can be resurrected no matter how they died?

Warcraft III, Command & Conquer: Generals, Age of Empires II.

Warcraft III was a great RPG game, but it just didn't feel like a good RTS with the lack of units (only 100) that made me feel like it wanted to hold itself back.
Yeah, most of the time I used only my hero units.

starcraft: brood war is the best by a wide margin. Red Alert 2 is pretty good as well, imo the best in that series. starcraft 2 is great as well.

Probably a tie between Warcraft III and Dawn of War: Dark Crusade

Warcraft III is an Epic fantasy full of all sorts of themes concepts and characters that are familiar to anyone who has been exposed to the Fantasy genre and puts an original spin on them to make them unique to the Warcraft setting. and it's got one of the best stories of any RTS I've played which goes a long way in helping me overlook some of the game play that has not aged well.

Base building and resource gathering is painfully slow, in the story mode your tech tree is frequently handicapped to avoid access to better gear, your population is frustratingly small and Upkeep was always a dumb idea.

The Dawn of War games do a lot to improve on that by retaining the base building of the RTS genre but scaling back on the resource gathering and keeping the focus on the action in the front lines.
Dark Crusade is my personal favorite of the Dawn of War series because of he wide number of playable races and the "Risk" style world map which allows you to slowly take over the planet in whatever manner you see fit.

The only problem is that the story is extremely dry. There's really no plot development or character growth there's just a paper thin plot about a planet full of various armies that are all shooting at one another.

thats dawn of war for you haha. i preferred soulstorm although the races added in SS were rubbish IMO. I also really preferred the campaign for SS, the way each territory gave you an elite bodyguard unit. I agree with you about the perfect balance between scaling back base building and resources and instead focusing on the fights was great fun.

My other RTS would be age of mythology titans expansion, great fun.
