My subscription on WOW recently ended and I have no urge to really go back to play it. So i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good free mmorpg.

I recently started playing Dungeons and Dragons Online. I had downloaded it a year or so ago and hadn't been impressed, but now that I'm giving it another try it's apparent that a lot has changed for the better. The game is basically free to play with the exception of having an option to pay for certain extra items (micro-transactions), none of which are necessary and all of which can be earned without paying by doing certain in-game quests.

I'm a former WoW player myself, and I am very impressed by DDO so far-- not having to pay for it is also very appealing.

Shin Megami Tensei Imagine, if you've played any games in the franchise then I would definitely recommend it.

Replacing WoW with a free MMO will not help, assuming you're trying to focus more on what some people call "real life". You'll just need to exercise more control over yourself for that...

Otherwise, I've played a bunch of free and semi-free MMOs and found most of them shit. Runes of Magic was an okay WoW clone with some interesting gameplay choices, but rather grindy and way more boring then WoW when it came to it. And if you thought that WoW story was pretty shit and the quests were badly written, wait till you see Runes of Magic... In most cases, it shows all the things you SHOULDN'T attempt when trying to engage at least somewhat intelligent people in a fantasy story.

Of course, given that it's an MMO, people don't read quests anyways so they don't care.

Overall, it's the same grind but with slightly different graphics and gameplay. Meh.

Although open world free-for-all ganking is pretty cool. And you get random drops on player kills, some of their gear or some of the stuff in their inventory or nothing at all.
Except if you kill too many people, guards in cities will start coming for you.

And of course, high level gankers will be on your ass in more popular zones. All rogues, invisible and able to instant kill ya.

And I have to say it again... the story in that game is so atrocious, I can't even express it with words alone.

Dungeons and Dragons online is also an obvious choice, although frankly I'm tired of it. I played it a bit when it was still P2P and I tried it again a few months ago only to quit forever last week. It's rather boring and repetitive... The game itself is great, for sure, but real D&D is so much more fun compared to it.

Could always play League of Legends. It is completely free and runs like DoTA. All the champions in the game can eventually be bought by simply playing the game plus they change free champions each week.

Dungeons & Dragons Online is good fun, however most of the time you will not see the the "massively" part of the MMORPG. But still, it's fun to get a group together and crawl trough a dungeon. The first time you do all the dungeons is fun, but later it does indeed get a bit repetitive, but so do all MMOGs. But still, you can have a lot of fun playing it. All sorts of crazy groups ready for you to join them. After all, it's free, so no harm done trying it, eh ?

Dragonica is pretty nice, although it plays more like an old beat'em'up rather than a MMORPG.

I have just tried maple story, even if I like japanese anime style graphic, this game looks horrible. I have played it mainly because its kinda original and combat was good for grinding kind of gameplay but grind in this game is even worse then graphic. Killing monsters is usualy only way to level up and even if combat is quite good you just level up too slow and max level is 200. Theres just no reason for me to keep playing.

I am a heavy MMO'er have played many of 'em. Wow, Everquest, guildwars, Star wars galaxis.
But my favourite MMO have yet to be released. Yes, even the Beta haven't come yet I like this game more than all others combined! I hope it turns out good though or I will be really disapointed. but I believe Star Wars: Old Republic will be the sauce of awesomeness.

Runes of Magic is pretty similar to WoW in some respects. But there are plenty of sites that list free MMORPG games with ratings and brief summaries of their contents. Might be worth looking up one of them.

There are always private servers for popular MMO's. There were some really good ones for Wow but I think Blizzard shut them down, Toxic-Wow was good.
For free to play ones, I've played Maplestory, Flyff, Anarchy Online (free version). Thats all I can think of at the moment.

I rather enjoyed Knight Online it has a micro payment system if you want to but you don't need to.
