Runescape. It has a membership fee for the full game, but it's not required to just play it. So much grinding, so much fun. By the way if you do the instant demo, don't pay attention to the voice casting. It's not present anywhere else in the game, just the demo.

Well is certainly not Dungeons and Dragons On-*backstabbed by Escapist Assassins*-

Seriously though, DDO is great as you can gather from the 30s add your forced to watch infront of every single video you watch here....

:D

EDIT: I forgot to mention that, while my experience with free mmos is rather limited, I did play Anarchy Online for brief period and found it fairly enjoyable. This is probably due to the fact that I only played it for about 3 days.

RuneScape was the only one I've ever tried, so by default, it is my favorite.

Shin Megami Tensei Imagine, if you've played any games in the franchise then I would definitely recommend it.
I quite enjoy Persona 3, but I found the controls for SMT Imagine to be quite painful.

DDO is OK, nothing stellar.

Maple Story might be worth checking out, I haven't given a shot at it yet.

It would have to be Runescape by default, since I don't play any other free MMORPGs.

However, when LOTRO goes free in the Autumn then my favourite will be that :D

WoW is really the only MMO I have ever really liked. But the 'best' free MMO I have played is probably Atlantica Online. I love the battle system, too. MegaTen Online is probably close behind. Collecting and fusing Demons was pretty fun.

Yup, it's called "outside" and has awesome graphics ;)
It's the ultimate free-range life-simulation experience. Only problem is you don't get money for killing stuff unless you chose "exterminator" as your profession. And we all know exterminators never get the cool buffs... lol

DDO is the only good free MMORPG out there. The rest are either fundamentally flawed, cheap WoW ripoffs (Runes of Magic), or cheap EQ ripoffs (Shaiya et. al.).

I did have a tad bit of fun with Atlantica Online (Strategy RPG) but the way its set up it's an ENORMOUS grindfest with very little story/reward until after fucktons of killing the same enemies over and over again.

Good and free don't go along well. DDO and GuildWars would be the closest to relatively free and decent quality experience, but if you played WoW for long time they will seem lacking in pretty much every aspect.

Most of the Micro-transaction ones, for unknown to me reasons called free2play, get really expensive if you want to do anything more than just grind for no reason.

Oh and "outside" has crappy shaders, and the character models sometimes look terrible, not to mention really bad writing, poor characters, idiotic plot, annoying permadeath and it takes forever to level up. Its also very expensive in the end.

Guild Wars was my favorite. While its not 100% free no subscription fee is nice....but I must admit if you played WoW religiously it will seem to be lacking alot expecally endgame
