You bought it, played it, and loved it. What is it and why?

This year is tough for me. I really enjoyed ME2 and such, but I am going to go with Fallout New Vegas. I love the gameplay. I love the story. I love the big world. I feel so immersed in this world. Heck, I even think some of the bugs are amusing excluding it crashing sometimes. I just got it for my PC as I orginally had it for the PS3.

Fallout New Vegas, and it wasn't close. Far and away the best game I played this year, and I bought a good six or seven of them.

(as for ME2, Bioware has never made a game I liked, so I gave it a pass.)

Red Dead Redemption. At least it had a character with some fucking charisma (I'm looking at you Mass Effect 2, you placid faced bastard).

Final Fantasy XIII, no contest. So many people seem to hate it, but I still can't get enough of it.

Civilizations 5

I've never played any prior version of this series...and despite many people absolutely hating this version of the game, I've found myself putting more time and having more fun with it than any other game this year. Mass Effect 2 and Starcraft 2 would make for a close runner-ups though.

Super Meat Boy.

Even though it makes me repeatedly want to throw my keyboard through my monitor, it's an incredibly well-made platformer where what could be charitably described as the steep difficulty curve is abated by the sense of progress you get as you figure out the method to bypass each deathtrap in turn, and by the outstanding levels that seem to have been thrown together by giddy eight-year-olds (and I mean that in the best possible sense). Also, the excellent soundtrack and massive piles of extra content certainly don't hurt either.

I got it at the start of the year but I still remember ME2 as the best game I played this whole year, no competition.

True. It's not as if Mass Effect 2 was a role-playing game in which the protagonist was a blank slate for you to characterise yourself over the course of the game or anything.

But it's not JUST the main character, though he is pretty pathetic. Every single character has that placid "Bioware face." The one where they stare creepily at you and talk to you with a face as calm as a serial killers.

Mass Effect 2, had to be. Not many games can compete with one that you can literally pick up where YOUR character left off at, and reference your actions from the previous game. And this year, none of them did.

Honorable mentions though to Metro 2033 and Alpha Protocol. Damn good games. Damn good.

Charisma is a personality trait though, and therefore down to characterisation, which is in turn the job of the writing...which was pretty good. Your gripe sounds more animation, which is fair enough. I didn't really notice it, but the characters in Mass Effect, I think, were all very well written.

Lex, it's not like I don't know the awesomeness that is MGS

MGS4 is my all time favourite game. If I had a PSP, I'd get it. :3 Don't try to educate me when it comes to the MGS series!! ^-^
