Elf because of bonus dialogue and it's amusing for the "Herald of Andraste" to be be an elf who doesn't even follow that religion and for them have to to deal with the orlesian court while knowing fuck all about human politics. Although my character is having a bit of crisis of faith at the moment. The only problem is I keep finding "human trained only" armour. I have found one set of "elf trained" armour but I can't use it yet.
My first character (And second for that matter, being a refined version of the first) was actually pretty similar: A Dalish Mage who grew up to be a rather solitary person in his clan. While the Keeper's teachings, particularly regarding the Creators and Forgotten ones never quite sat well with him, he accepted them as a given since he didn't really know much else.

Then the conclave happened, and he was thrust into the world of Humans, being called the Herald of Andraste, a symbol of their religion, and he had to wonder if he really believed in the Elven Pantheon in the first place. His time at Haven and with the Inquisition in general seemed to make him realize that he wasn't a particularly good Dalish: He didn't feel any particular superiority over Solas, who others would've considered a Flat-Ear; He was rather smitten with Cassandra, and didn't consider Humans to be inferior to Elves, simply different, and the same went for Dwarves and Qunari such as Varric and Iron Bull.

It was after Redcliffe and a particular event at Haven that cemented his conversion to Andrastianism, and while he still doesn't believe he's some sort of Chosen One, he reluctantly embraced the responsibility and duty that came with his position in the Inquisition.

On another note, there are other Elf-Trained armor schematics, such as the Dalish Scout armor for Rogues, and the Dalish Warrior armor for, well, Warriors. The Scout armor can be bought from the Hissing Wastes merchant if I remember correctly, and the Keeper Robes schematic can be taken from the corpse of the hardest Dragon in the game to kill, the Highland Ravager in Emprise du Lion, being the last one in the line. I don't know where to find the Dalish Warrior armor schematic though. If you want to equip armor for a different class, use either Dales Loden Wool, Snoufleur Skin or Silverite for the primary crafting slot. Won't make Elves able to wear Human-Trained armor, but it'll make it so Mages can wear Warrior armor and so on.

First character was a bog-standard human sword-and-shield (which I had never played before in a dragon age game, so I thought I would give it a shot).

It's a boring way to play. I still had a lot of fun with Inquisition, but my character was so boring. Human non-mages are incredibly boring, with a lame back story, and there are no interesting interactions based around your race. Not only that, but playing with a sword-and-shield is essentially playing the "never-ever-lose" mode, at least on Normal. I died once, due to the fact that I took on something far above my level, but as long as I stuck to level appropriate enemies I was never short on potions, because enemies did such little damage. Sword-and-shield warriors are super-tanks on Normal, and I solo-ed the last boss and plenty of dragons. I didn't care what happened to my party members because long after they were all dead, I was still trucking along without even a single scratch, such was much armour rating and ability to generate guard.

If you want a really easy experience, play as a sword-and-shield warrior. It's also painfully dull. I literally used no strategy outside of occasionally pressing a button to taunt to generate guard and holding down the left mouse button.

What companions have you used mostly?

Human rogue, dagger spec. Hostile, mobile, and sight unseen. I'm liking dual-bladed daggers - they slightly alter my fighting style to something of a flourish, like Oberyn Martell. Lots of spinning. While the backstory is nothing much to talk about, it is nice using my family lineage in matters of diplomacy. And it's just the right difficulty to play, not too easy like playing sword and board, something I have noticed whenever I've switched to Cassandra. I am liking bows though after spending time with Sera, especially against dragons. I may change spec to that in the future.

Dalish Elf ... who's an archer. Let me tell you- it's not that fun. At all.

I really do like how cool my character looks. I enjoy the fact his race plays a large roll into the universe, along with having a unique voice to go with the character. But his class is what makes me reconsider deleting him. Archery isn't bad, but it's not exciting. You just spam the attack button for him to continuously draw the bow, shoot ... repeat. Nothing exciting at all.

Even his specials are just power shots, drawing the bow longer and doing more damage but that's about it. Not exciting whatsoever.
Makes me regret this because i'm pretty far in the game (not main mission wise, but like side quests + missions in general I am).

Don't go archer. It's dull after the first few fights even when you find great bows to match the damage you want.
As a Dalish elf archer, I am forced to agree. I'm thinking of redoing it as a Dalish elf warrior instead. A leader should lead from the front!

Buy the respec amulet (from the store at the blacksmith) and go with duel dagger if you are bored. The first one is 1 silver. It makes no difference if you picked bow or DD at the start.

A note on specializations: For anyone playing rogue do not pick Tempest unless you have some self control or want no challenge. Flask of Fire is overpowerd as hell because you can use focus abilities (they're suppose to be your ultimate which takes ages to build up) without costing focus. I'm fairly sure the no cooldown and no stamina cost is not actually meant to apply to focus but unless bioware patches it Flask of Fire lets you use a focus ability for free every 30 or so seconds.

Especially since the Inquisitor focus is pretty much already a I Win Suckers button to begin with.

Well I wanted to be a dwarf mage but just like in origins I had to settle for me second choice (since Qunari are now playable that didn't bother me quite as much though)

Yep, recently I was finishing up a few quest and got attacked by a group of 5 or 6 bandits. I was feeling lazy so used MotR and the entire group died instantly. I think the ability sucks things into the fade, at this rate the bandits will be able to set up a village there.
Even if your focus ability isn't enough to kill something you're a rogue. Between the invulnerability from Flask of Lightning and stealth they aren't going to be able to kill you before you can cast it again. I think I'm going to reload and try assassin. Hopefully they don't have a game breaker skill.

I went with a Human male mage who was spec'd into Knight-Enchanter and I romanced Cassy. I wasn't overly sure if it was going to be the specialisation for me, but once I saw the whole "regenerate barrier based on damage that you deal" I was pretty much sold. Turned out, that in combination with the spirit blade, I was out-surviving tanks most of the time. It also made the game pretty boring afterwards, as it stripped away pretty much every ounce of challenge, but I still felt like a Jedi and that made me happy. Will probably try out a female elven Rogue next, anything but Artificer though.

They'll make Sandal playable eventually

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA: Assassin is even worse (stealth plus auto critical plus upgraded Hidden blades equals 20.000 Damage per attack: my Inquisitor shived dragons to death with his murder knife)

God damn it, is there any spec in this that isn't stupidly OP then? I don't really want play as an artificer. I guess I'll stick with tempest and just restrict myself to only using regular skills with flask of fire barring repetitive trash enemy clearing.
Bioware needs to learn how to balance. Even the AI is able to be near immortal with KE so that one's out as well for a mage play-through.

Female qunari mage. With no horns. I guess I wanted to make her as big of a special snowflake as possible.

In a Bioware Game? Overpowered protagonists are to them what overweight italian plumbers are to Nintendo.

Human Mage

Knight Enchanter specialization is very powerful, but is also very boring. Do not recommend.

I think on my next playthrough, I'm going to be 2H Warrior. Maybe a Dwarf.
Melee combat in this series just flows better and it feels more impactful. Magic is alright, but not as fun as I find magic characters in most every other game.

Playing as a female qunari archer atm and having fun.

Bro is playing as a male qunari mage.

Fair warning though, at least on 360 qunari can have some occasional clipping issues due to their horns and some odd camera placement issues due to the fact that they're so darn big. Lol
