I tend to drink something--anything will do--and just tip my head back as I swallow slowly.

That's what I do. I still hold my breath sometimes but that gets tiring.

Eating a spoonful of sugar always works for me. I don't know what the explanation is for it, but it works and it works well. The holding breath idea will work sometimes for me, but not always.

Deep breath in, hold for 10 seconds. Deep breath out, hold for ten seconds.

Doesn't always work on the first go, but it usually stops it dead.

Something thats worked for me is a friend telling me every time "If you hiccup again I'll give you £20" and to this day I've never won that £20!

That aside when alone, just holding my breath

Step 1: Get Hiccups.
Step 2: Hold your breath for as long as you can without hurting yourself.
Step 3: Release air slowly.
Step 4: Enjoy not having Hiccups.

Hiccups are "an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm and respiratory organs".

Basically imagine hiccups as a crash for your respiratory system and this method is the reset button.

I always start to try and remember the last time that I've seen a white horse. I have no idea why it works but 99% of the time my hiccups are gone.
Yeah, concentrating hard on something else nearly always gets rid of the hiccups for me. Usually, I try to remember what I've had for dinner the past week.

I go for the old drink water upside down trick. Works fairly well, but is a tad awkward.
Yep, I do that too. I think it's again the concentration that does in the hiccups. :)

Or just holding my breath. Boring, but it works.

As with most I hold my breath! Big breath in through the nose and deep breath out through the mouth!

Gargling mouthwash seems to do the trick as well.

Hold your palm out straight and press it down on someone's hand as hard as you can and have them push back, apparently it helps you to hold your breath and must help the diaphragm settle down, and in my experience it works.

I stop what I'm doing and actively concentrate on not hiccuping. It works for me every time and I may hiccup maybe 2 after it if I'm not really focusing on it.

I have found that this doesn't work for everyone, but I've gotten thanks from those it does.

Also, if you ever swallow fluid down the wrong pipe, remember that you can still breath through your nose when you're coughing. I don't know how but I'd missed that lesson until recently and it has made that process a lot less difficult for me ever since.

Decapitation. I've only had to do it the once- it's so effective hiccups have never troubled me again!

I usually chug an entire bottle of water and that takes care of it. I may look into some of these other options for when it's not practical to do that though.

I drink anywhere between 8 and 12 large gulps of water without taking a breath. I figure it drowns the hiccups XD

As mentioned above, hiccups are an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm. I played trombone in middle and high school, so my diaphragm does what I tell it to. So when I get hiccups, I just stop, breathe, take control of my diaphragm, and move on.

I don't think I've ever gotten hiccups ever. Does anyone have a technique for GETTING them? :p

My personal technique is to drink a glass of water at the very first sign of hiccups, the sooner the better! Another way is to apparently drink water through a straw, worked like a charm on my brother once.

When I encounter hiccups, I just let it go to the point where I gather enough air for a loud belch.

And then I let loose the monster.

Usually that works. Sometimes, though, I have to loose two or three until it resets.
