I totally dig the whole Survivalism subculture and such. But some people take it a bit too far. I know that personally, I could prolly outfit my home and get supplies to deal with anything from a snow storm to a zombie outbreak. But the thing is, that even if you are fully prepared, you will never be in a 100% situation to perfectly use and employ all those skills and tools. More or less the whole 'Survivalism' subculture has grown because of FEAR. As it is well known, the more advanced a society is, the more to Fear there is. In the past we only had to fear things like tornado's destroying homes or fires spreading across our crops, so naturally we would be prepared for such events. But now, we have a multitude of things to fear and try and prepare for. And the odds of these several thousand, maybe millions of things happening are incredibly low.

That depends are you preparing for 2012 or just staying ready in case a flood happens or something? It is all about motive so far as I can see.

I know in some countries that survival kits and training is just a way of life. Im pretty sure the likes of Norway etc.(is that a good example?) would have a reasonbly skilled popultion in the arts of survival due to such adverse environmental conditions.

I dont see anything wrong at all with being prepared for all situations. I know my familly have the likes of portable stoves, plenty of tinned food and bio fuel heating system due to the fickleness of modern day tech(such as recently when the water was knocked off to large populated areas of NI)

I play the odds, if something horrific is going to happen, I will most likely be dead, os ill just enhoy them time till that happens.
I am low-consuming person, I barely eat anything, i can survive for long time with low consuming. I am also extremely great when it comes to salvaging things, I know where to find stuff, how to make it into part and what to do with them. I can cook, farm, hunt, fish. DO basic medical treatments, I know how to repair mechanical things... If I would need to survive I most likely could, would I want to? Ill look in to that depending on the situation I am in.
All I need to make sure that I have enough of Nortrispaply... (something) and Tramadol on similar opiat based painkiller so I wont kill myself because of the damn nerve pain I have on my hand... (It is quite bad condition I have...)

Having a quick back up plan is good.

Enormous interconnected underground bunkers is not.

Never heard of that sort of thing ever, and I kinda think you're a bit crazy too.
I'm in the process of making one myself. Just in case of the fall of society you know. It won't be very strenuous to do and, if society is destroyed, Who will be the one laughing?!
Probably both of us, I'm a graceful loser like that.
