I think it is a fascinating subject that, when you are young, is one of those things that gives you the mind boggling sense of scale and just...the awe of the universe we live in and the rock we are stuck to. I did cover the subject to about GCSE level (age 16) as part of Geography and it was part of that fascination with dinosaurs things that a lot of kids go through (seriously, why do kids love them so much and why can I no longer pronounce things that I was perfectly at ease with at age 11).

Just because it isn't taught to you at school doesn't mean you can't explore for yourself. This is something that annoys the tits off me, that people don't seem to indulge a natural curiosity and learn things just because. "We didn't do it at school" seems like such a lousy excuse. I taught myself a lot of things just because things were so interesting (at the risk of sounding like a crotchety old bat, now I suppose people would rather melt their brain watching "reality" shows on television).

And for those who hate it because of "religious" reasons, I could not possibly comment without getting suspended again. Rest assured I am sighing and rolling my eyes...

Geology is important to the survival of the human race, as it is a study of the physical characteristics of our planet at large. I took a couple courses in college and I feel better for having had them. It means that when something goes down on this planet, I have the education to understand why, or if it's beyond normal human understanding...I can theorize.

...not only can you see the structure of the mineral more closely when you stick the thing in cross-polarisation all sorts of things jump right at you and suddenly a pyroxene is easily identifiable from an amphibole.

I don't actually know much about geology, though I think that's a shame. I'm thoroughly enjoying this thread already, and I do hope you'll post about it on this site if you get a educative channel or blog up and running. Personally I look in the other direction when it comes to studying science -- I want to be an astronomer, you see. I wish I knew more about the subject than I do though. I'm only going into my second year of college, and I've only just switched majors from math to physics, but it can be quite embarrassing to be as ignorant as I am. Product of Georgia school systems I guess.

I think I'll go watch that "How the Earth Was Made" show mentioned a few posts back. It's on Netflix.

I know nothing about geology. Every time I hear someone say Geology the only thing that comes to mind is the phrase "Rock sediment" and I doze off. Whatever makes you happy though.
