I bought Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone because it was written by R.A. Salvatore and I really enjoyed it. Unlike everyone else who either hates it or has never heard of it.
Bought Starcraft 2 because it had a jukebox that played Sweet Home Alabama in spaaaaaaaace! Well I was already thinking about buying it but my friend told me about said jukebox and it turned into a must buy.
Also my cousin bought Mass Effect 2 solely because of how awesome Zaeed is.

I bough Silent Hill 3 because Linkara showed a scene of it in his review of Dying Inside.

Also bought Tales of Legendia because I thought that people were bullshitig about how bad it was and for the most part they were. It's not the best Tale game but it's not the worst.the Phantasia remake gets that honor.

It had an awesome metal case. Luckily enough the game inside it turned out to be Hitman Blood Money.

I bought Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl because buying it bundled with Call of Pripyat (which I really wanted) was only £3 on Steam whereas buying it separate would have cost a lot more. I needed to buy it again anyway; I'd played it years earlier and never finished it because my PC was really bad back then.

At the same time I bought Call of Pripyat because I needed a game that was genuinely scary; most western horror-themed games are less scary than children's cartoons. Nothing but a bit of terrifying atmosphere gets the heart pumping faster in a good way.

"It'll make so-and-so who I give it to as a joke xmas present look REALLY gay..." might be the worst it gets with me. I've never been so flush that I can waste serious amounts of money on a luxury such as that without the reason being "I'm kinda bored of the games I already have, now, this one's had good reviews, it's of a type I think I'll like and seems pretty interesting anyway, plus I can afford it". Though a small amount of auteur or series bias does kick in occasionally (possibly the ultimate reason behind buying Tempest 2000 and GT3, then 4... the former and latter came out very well, the middle one... a bit disappointing. Win some lose some.)

When I first bought a PS2 (and knew nothing about it's library of games) I bought Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, cause I thought the name was funny.
I had such low expectations that it fuckin' blew me away.

I bought Elite Beat Agents because my best friend was under the impression it had a cover of a song from our favorite band. (It didn't.) Still, it was a hilariously fun game, even if I could pick much better songs for different events. (Dance or Die by FF5 for the final battle anyone?)
