Didn't I read somewhere that Half Life 1 is built off an expanded version of the Quake 1 engine?
Sort of. Half Life's Gold Source engine is a heavily modified Quake engine, with elements from the Quake 2 engine as well. It's like Frankenstein's Monster.

It kinda worries me how much useless trivia i already knew before i read it here. I even played the MS-Office Easter Eggs and saw the "Telnet Starwars Movie". I'm such a nerd :(

Anyways:

- In Guitar Hero 1, a loading screen says that no one actually WANTS you to play Free Bird until, in Guitar Hero 2, you actually do it.

- Nerd-Favorite Wil Wheaton has a role in GTA IV as one of the Aliens in the "Republican Space Rangers" TV Show

- In Metal Gear Solid, if you are hiding in a locker, you can press the shoulder buttons slightly to look out. If there happens to be a poster of a girl in side of the locker and you look at it when you press the shoulder buttons, Snake makes a kissing noise.

Link is normally left handed, however in Twilight princess the developers made him right handed so as to make it easier for right handed players to use the Wii remote.

Master Chief's original concept was based off of a Japanese biker cartoon thing.

All windows XP operating Systems have a secret starwars episode IV text-based movie in the telnet network.

Bungie created the Halo2 single player campaign in less then one year.
Link was still left handed in the gamecube version.

Ahh so that's why the halo 2 campaign was crap.

The SNES game Earthbound (Mother 2 in Japan) uses small samples in its music, as well as regular SNES midi-or-whatever music. For example, the song that plays when a player starts a game and enters names and favorite foods and stuff? That includes a tiny sample of the Liberty Bell March by John Philip Souza, more commonly known as the Monty Python's Flying Circus Theme.

More trivial, however, is the fact that the Moonside level music includes a tiny, slowed-down sample of the introductory keyboard notes and drum-click sounds of the song "Keep On Laughin'" by Ric Ocasek, former lead singer of the Cars. This was the first song on his second solo CD, "This Side of Paradise".

Don't believe me? You can hear a snippet of the beginning of the song at Amazon, here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VWSGDA/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk1?ie=UTF8&qid=1211925656&sr=8-1

And the "Moonside Swing" song is on Starmen.net at: http://starmen.net/mother2/music/099-%20Earthbound%20-%20Moonside%20Swing.mp3

I only discovered this because I played Earthbound back in about 1995 while listening to that very album - on tape, no less.

And yes, the Ric Ocasek album was first (1985, Earthbound came out in 1994 or so...)
Wow, that's cool stuff. Here's some more Earthbound stuff...

- The Runaway Five were supposed to look like the Blues Brothers, but Nintendo North America was afraid of legal action.

- Supposidly several Pink Floyd and Beatles songs are also sampled in the soundtrack for Earth Bound, Mother and Mother 3.

It shows.

Warcraft I was originaly supposed to be a warhammer game but GW didn't think it would make enough money so Metzen thought out a new story line over lunch.

- The original Metroid was the first game to use the Password system.

- Around the time Donkey Kong came out in arcades, Universal Pictures (the owners of King Kong) sued Nintendo over copyright infringement. (don't worry, Ninty won.) Nintendo's defense attorney in that case was a man named Jack Kirby.

Can you guess which famous Ninty character was named after the attorney?
Umm... Going out on a limb here, but Kirby?
WRONG! No wait, you're right.

There is speculated links between Sonic 3's music and Micheal Jackson apparently having worked on many of the most iconic tracks.

It's kinda hard to explain well in text so more detailed information can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbVM-l2Oku4

dmc1 was supposed to be resident evil 4.

dmc1 dante was suppose to be leon kennedy.

dmc character names are inspired by (dante's inferno "the devine comedy")

dmc2 was suppose to be a non-dmc game staring lucia.
Adding on, Vergil's voice actor, Daniel Southworth also voiced for Credo in DMC 4

Nero in DMC 4 uses his left hand for the sword, but the motion capture actor is right handed.

The voice actors for dante(3,4), nero, and vergil/credo have all worked in power rangers.

Dante's voice actor directed DMC3 special edition.

In warcraft 3: The frozen throne, on the second (or third, the one where your in a dungeon and freed by the naga) theres a puzzle to gain a secret level involving clicking on various sheep to make up the phrase "Bah Rem You" which is an obvious reference to Babe.

first password game on a console is Kid Icarus & Metroid, both release the same month.

Nine Inch Nails gets a plug in the game quake because Trent Reznor made the soundtrack.
The logo appears on the ammo boxes for the nail gun.

Metroid was loosely based on the movie Alien (to the point the boss name Ridley is a nod to Ridley Scott the director of Alien)

The wii version is basically a mirror reflection of the gamecube version. Also Twilight was originally for gamecube.

Zero was the original concept design for Mega man X, but the designers decided to change it to what we see today in fear that it strayed too much from what Mega man was known as. So in turn they made Zero into a sidekick.
