I'll have to jump on that bandwagon. I was once on their forums responding to someone by saying something like:
Queer, I never thought of X that way, I always thought Y"
I was then banned for saying queer, in the context of 'weird'.

My ex very rarely sends me gifs from 4chan. It's the worst place in the world. Don't go there ever.

What is that from and where do I find more of it, good sir? If you don't mind telling me, that is.
It's from the movie Fantastic Mr. Fox. It's a stop-motion movie with foxes by Wes Anderson... So it's basically perfect.

Yeah, asked what PSP games I should get for my jap PSP (before it hit the US) on gamefaqs, I came back after getting lunch and it was a flame war of PSPlosers vs DSfags. So I didn't have anything to really say there anymore if 1 question of excitement got me that. I hear it's better now but no idea.

On the now nonexistent 2moons forums (an english translated korean mmo published initially by the now defunct Acclaim Games), the worst experience I've had was when the community manager got hacked. He was called "Damned_One" or something along those lines, and the hacker locked the general discussion for the game, and posted one locked stickied thread. The thread contained a download he said you should install to enable ads in game and in turn you'd be given bonus exp.

The download was a keylogger.

I didn't download it personally because I'm not retarded, but it was bad. Damned got his account back briefly after a week or something, then he got hacked again. The thread lasted all the way up until the forums died, and not long after Acclaim died too. Which was several weeks time. All the while god knows how many people actually installed the thing and had their characters stripped of anything valuable. That's probably the worst story I have from that forum, but it's one among many.
I liked 2 moons a lot. It would have been awesome if it had quests and pve content outside of grinding. But given how easy the game was to hack, i'm not shocked the forums were just as vulnerable. My gf managed to hack 2 moons with no programming experience at all. Game had great pvp and character classes/skills though. I still miss my battle summoner(coolest summoning class in any game with dual katana's) and my gf misses her Senechal(coolest healing class in any game with blood whip, curses and transformation skills).

Cod4Boards. I was a very long time user there who spent the first year or two mostly lurking before I began to post much more often. I tried defending defensive gameplay as well as the Ghost perk during the early Blops 1 era and... things did not go well. Got into quite the debate with a mod who literally said that any sort of defense or strategy at all was cheap (I'm seriously not kidding) and that only charging straight in at all times was the only way the game should ever be played. Also got a shit-ton of insults from it and it seemed like I was fighting with half of the entire message board over it. Doesn't help that I stated that CoD wasn't a true arcade shooter and had a surprising amount in common with tactical shooters.

Ended up completely abandoning the site, even though I would literally spend all day on it beforehand(I probably broke 16-hours in a single day on more than one occasion). Ended up here eventually due to discovering Zero Punctuation, lurked for quite a while, then actually joined up, lurked some more, then began to post semi-often. Still am not on here nearly as much as I was on C4B, but this community for the most part is so much better that I don't regret it in the slightest. There are some occasional issues that crop up with the Escapist (the "No Piracy Discussion ever!" rule springs to mind), but you can be fairly certain that a well-argued point will actually be heard out as long as you're not directly insulting somebody (or, again, you're saying anything pro-piracy. Grrr.) Plus, I like silly; and we're chocked full of silly people, as proven by our own mods being some of the silliest of the whole bunch. While we may have some issues with the mods at times and can be quite opinionated about certain things (ME3 anyone? :p), we're still easily among the best communities out there.

Now, if only I could get someone to do a Rule 85 of Jim Sterling and his mini-Dafoe. GO, MY SILLY COMRADES! GO!!! >XD *lightning cracks in the background*

Completely agree about what's been said about the BSN forums, they're downright toxic [http://dgaider.tumblr.com/post/39544291251/on-fandom-and-toxic-environments].
One bad experience I had was on another gaming forum, another girl called me a bully and said I was calling her an insensitive cad when all I was trying to do is share my experience and my view on a particular subject matter. We did end up clearing it up by PM, because it just bugged me to no end, and she did admit that she was being "overly hormonal" (her words, not mine). Still, to this day, it just doesn't sit right with me, especially since I was bullied myself as a child.

Basicly any forum that let people vote on what you write. It's ok if your oppinion is the same as the general consensus on said forum, but if it's not instead of accually having interesting arguments you just get downvoted.

I have to agree on the BioWare Social Network, and I'm a regular there. Well, at least the ME3, DAII and DAII boards are bad or "toxic". The Off Topic board, one of BSN's only bastions of decency (probably due to it being waaay down on the forums page, so most of the dregs of the main boards seemingly don't realize it exists)and the friends I made there are pretty much the only reasons I stay, including the awesome MLP thread. Never a dull moment there.

The ME3 MP board can be a decent place and have some pretty fun threads when people aren't whinging about every little balance change.

I'm tempted to talk about the trauma that was the Tali's Sweat thread on BSN, but...

...I really shouldn't have gone to /b/.

I really should not have.

Seriously.

Don't do it.
Oh good lord don't remind me of that abomination. Chris Priestly closed down the ME3 Character & Romance Board about 7 months ago because things simply got way too out of hand. By far the most volatile and disturbing place on that site. The actual reason the board closed was because a civil war broke out between Miranda fans over something really stupid and trivial that I forget. Eventually the fight leaked into other threads and just spiraled from there, so BW just closed down the board, seemingly forever. Or at least hopefully forever.

Hey!

This topic doesn't allow me to complain about the Escapist, no fair!

I don't really consider the Escapist better than most other sites. How about... eh, I'll have to think about it. Too many various bad experiences. I saw a cat torture picture one time that scarred me for life. That was probably the worst internet experience I've ever had, period. And it was posted on an imageboard.

I've looked at one or two others, and normally they are either pretty dead or full of rabid animals. The only other one where I've decided to join is Football related just because it's nice to talk to other fans, and to people about football in general.

But in general, dead or rabid.

EN's threads are a treasure trove of gifs and I can't wait until season four so I can finally participate in one.

OT: This is my only real forum and I only lurk so I got nothing.
Dear God, why did my curiosity have to get the better of me? Need some time to recover from that.

OT: The only other forum I'm involved in was the Borderlands 2 forum which was good for a few months after the game was released but in the last month or so it seemed to get really average. Not so much in aggressive posts but some of the crap people would talk about was really not needed. The worst part is though, one of the mods was kind of abusive to people he didn't like and locked threads just because he didn't like them. Then there were the couple of users that were practically untouchable because the mods wouldn't want to lose them.

Sorry about that. Don't click this one. It's worse.

I'm afraid I can't really since Escapist is really one of the only forums that are about General discussion. There's one more but it's not too active and it's like totally opposite this one. Really, really lax. It was mostly a place where people moved from one big major site after it closed down.

But yeah, basically all my forums are roleplaying ones. Think like the little subforum for that here. It's just a whole damn site. And generally the more active ones don't have a bundle of different ones but the whole place is just part of one particular plot.

So yeah... nothing to really add.

I can't really say I've had bad experiences, considering I usually leave because I find a forum too boring(Crunchyroll forum was one). Once you go to 4chan, that's pretty much the zenith of what an Internet forum should be.

The only reason why I go to either Escapist and Destructoid is because of Jim and Yahtzee, and posting the latest anime related news here in Escapist now and then.

At the risk of getting all philosophical like Batty just before he tries to kill Deckard "I've seen things..." or Cosby-like cantankerous. In my 18 years of using the internet I have had a lot of ups and downs. There is definitely something about my online persona which some people take an instant dislike to as I don't have anyone trying to fight me in real life.

It is good and bad that you can hate people you have never met and completely negate their existence by blocking them on Facebook.

Although I started using the internet in the first years that the web took off, my first introduction to talking to people over the web was through USENET (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet) and also on a tv discussion group that I managed to get a letter from a major media organisation sent to the college IT administrators and temporarily lost my network access while I wrote a letter apologising to the head of the network. The plus side is that I met one of my best friends through it and still talk to them until this day.

USENET even turns up in the first Mission Impossible movie "SCROLL USENET GROUPS" shows the list starting with alt.alien.vampire.flonk.flonk.flonk.

The group I posted on the most throughout that time was alt.religion.kibology, which is nothing like a religion and does have the majority of its users from the USA with people all around the world. A rubber chicken was mailed around the world via the group at one point. I did send a large amount of chocolate to a person in Toronto after she had just been released from hospital and her boyfriend hugged her so hard she had to be re-admitted due to six cracked ribs. Tumbleweeds blowing through the USENET group these days, but it still exists in a smaller form on Facebook and I am friends with a lot of the people from it.

As for the bad experiences, I did try and engage with the SomethingAwful forums, but it left a bad taste in my mouth after everyone piled on in one thread. I only post one thread there per year generally and reply even more rarely. You do really have to watch your bandwidth if post images/video to the site. I have 100Gb of bandwidth per month for my website and people looking at four animated GIFs I had hosted on my website used up 80Gb in four days.

I don't want to name it, but there is a local music forum that irritates me, people hide behind usernames and have even gone as far to make entire threads to annoy me. They still suck up and want photos though, I can see the visitors coming to my site from there.

Facebook is good and bad in that the messages do not come with a subject line so you do not know the content until you click on the icon. When people sent emails without a subject line it is usually bad news. Also the hivemind aspect to Facebook can get quite annoying at times.

I don't really use Twitter as much so I can't really comment on it. I at least post different things to Twitter than Facebook and if you have a bad experience on it is your own fault as you can choose who to follow.

At the risk of bringing down the wrath of the Iron Fist, I am going to mention the Cave Clan forums. You can't get in to them unless you go through a probationary period although that is more for exploring. I joined when you still had to join by a sending a letter to the PO BOX. I am too busy to go exploring now, but it has a large contingent of photographers and its own film festival these days. Due to people confusing what sort of "underground" they are, they do have the occasional problem with people who obsess over them. There is a lot of bagging out people which I don't really support but I still go to see them for the anniversary at the pub each January.

World of Warcraft forums. I'm Swedish, so I used the european forums. So many Hungarians. So many French. So little correct spelling or grammar.
Oh boy, those are a treat. Being Hungarian myself, I feel doubly ashamed at those people (not all of us are like that, i swear). I've had my share of run-ins with my own people. Hell, this one time I was accused of "betraying my homeland" because I was the only poster on the whole thread to use correct english grammar. That was fun.
Also, the fact that I lived a total of 3 years in Hungary, and that my Hungarian is abysmal didn't help.

But hey, you found that bad, just wait till you hear a Hungarian person try to speak english.
Alternatively, if there are no Hungarian people in your vicinity, the experience can be replicated by applying a cheese-grater to ear.

Captcha: Attila the Hun.
oh, swell.
