When it says No More Heroes on the cover.
But seriously.

It depends on the game and how many elements it has.
Some games you can get a good taste of within an hour.
Other games (like RPGs and many other open world games: GTAs Fallout 3) become more engrossing the more you explore them.

With RE4, it probably wouldn't gotten any better for him. If it was San Andreas, I would've told him to try at least opening up the map.

Really though, No More Heroes is the only game I think is more overrated than RE4. RE4 was a slow sandbagged shooter with quick time events; it's no wonder I didn't like it, until it came out on the wii.

If a game is technically shitfucked up its own ass and the controls are awful, you'll know in the first five minutes of play.

(Red Ninja being a good example)

generally a half hour to an hour. if something cool hasnt happened yet, then its bad. the only thing that will keep me going is is people say "but the ending is amazing". it usually isnt but still.. oh and that half hour? it starts when i press "new game". includes cutscenes and loading.

If a game hasn't been fun to play and has been terrible then for me, that is shit.

Super Monkey Ball and Fifa for example. I hate those games.

I just....I couldn't help myself. I'm surprised that it took over 3 replies before someone picked me up on it. Perhaps I should go back and add a /sarcasm? Or a LOL at the end? Or just stop posting entirely.
There are people that honestly believe that kind of shit. And yeah, sarcasm doesn't exactly carry over the internet, lack of inflection, tone, so on.

If it has flaws which can make it impossible to complete. Looking at you Perfect Dark Zero, Fallout 3, Oblivion!
They aren't without bugs, and yet hundreds of thousands of people have been able to beat them repeatedly. Hmmm.

If it isn't even funny anymore and the prospect of a movie, book, or internet browsing seems better than ever playing it again.

When I start doing other things during the cut scene movies. Like I did in Metal Gear and Kingdom Hearts.

Jeez, this has made me think...

I do need at least an hour with a game before I can honestly decide its rubbish...

How many hours have I wasted!!! No other entertainment demands this much devotion, damn it!

Generally, a truly bad game will have me playing until the point that I've completely lost all interest in it. In extreme cases, this has been before the end of the tutorial.

a good example of a bad fighting/brawling game is when the creators give me a wide variety of weapons only to find that said weapons actually bring imbalance to the gameflow and suddenly what starts as random button mashing ends in random stick wiggling.haha SSBB, good times

if it's not a fighting game my main "fuck-off-bad-game-meter" normally triggers when my controls feel like a brick with rainbow dots on them. I like to think I have a strong tolerance for bad games, shitty story or difficulty aside.

When you die for the fifteenth time from rockets being shot at you with such predictable timing you can but only get shot down and get up just in time to get caught in the trajectory of another rocket. Lather, rinse, repeat untill that vein on your head bursts.
(yes, i mean you, Force Unleashed!)

I usually wait at least until I've uninstalled it (or in the for a console game removed the disk).
Or when I hit a gamebreaking bug.

I usually give a game 45 minutes to an hour.. If at that point I can't immerse myself in the game, if it doesn't grab me, I usually stop.
