I used to get bothered by reviews when I'd read about them, but then I realized that they're being paid to give an opinion about something and it all became meaningless to me.

I don't even care anymore what they have to say, I know what I like and what I hate, and nothing in a review will make me change my mind.

Really? Either you're not showing enough people or you're ignoring negative feedback.
No one, in the history of anything has ever only had positive feedback.
Also, if you only hear good things, you won't know where the holes in your talent lie.

Album... critic... WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA?

No way someone can make a living off of criticizing albums... I can't see someone taking an opinion of a music critic seriously.

Sorry... I am so glad that, even as a musician, I have been ignorant of the realm of music critique.

TBH, for a couple of games my opinion has been swayed though. However it has usually been due to a gradual change of thinking in regards to enjoying games.

It usually makes me realize that either

1: They're being critical, it's in their job description.
2: The reasons I like that particular media grate against that particular critic.
3: The game wasn't as good as I thought, but I still enjoy it for one reason or another.

I see no reason for earth-shattering realizations.

Which album?
I don't pay any attention to music critics and I don't game a lot or watch a lot of films any more so this doesn't affect me much. But it has happened a few times...

Though I played Alpha Protocol after hearing of it's rather lackluster reviews since it was super cheap on Steam and ended up wondering why it was received that way since I really liked it.
Because it really is shit. Granted, the plot is impressively malleable, but then when you spend so little time making anything else even bearable, there'd better be at least one thing that's fucking good.

OT: Nothing so extreme, but I was surprised by how divisive the Watchmen film was - and it wasn't even particularly between people who had and hadn't read the comics.

Oh, and EVERYONE disappointed me by people hardly ever fucking talking about The Assassination of Jesse James (by the Actor Casey Affleck). Watch it!

Try George Starostin [http://only-solitaire.blogspot.com/]. He's a nice guy who does nice reviews, and it should clue you in on how music criticism works.

I'm a big fan of the 'so bad it's aweome' genre, so quite often I will love something that critics almost universally pan (i.e. just about anything with Nicholas Cage in it).

That said, there are a few things I legitimately enjoy that it seems everybody else hate, such as Dragon Age 2. The only reason I care, though, is because I know game companies will probably listen to the majority opinion.

I disagree with Roger Ebert's Review of "Blue Velvet" (Don't we all) and I can't understand how people liked "Uncharted", and compared it to "Dark Void" in terms of your character in the latter game being a lot like Nathan Drake. That's not true because Nathan Drake was a prat, and one I didn't care much for. Your character in Dark Void had no personality, there's a big difference.

I do have my differences with a lot of people, but there are so few I can think of, however, those two (or three) are the ones of the top of my head.

You shouldn't define your tastes exclusively by what critics approve of, but neither should you completely ignore what they say. Seeing a differing perspective on a work can give you greater insight into it, and allow you to obtain a better understanding of it. Even reading a negative review of something you dislike can be valuable, because it allows you to highlight the aspects of it where your opinion splits with the reviewer and thus grant you a greater understanding of why you liked it in the first place.

There's a middle ground between blindly following the opinions of critics and declaring every single dissenter to be an idiot.

No response to this? How strange.
Maybe this lends credence to my second possibility?

I wouldn't say he "ripped my heart out" but I've disagreed with Yahtzee quite a few times. His opinion of GTA IV, for example, was that it was a mediocre game with annoying elements. I agreed on the annoying elements, but I found the gameplay to be absolutely fantastic. I enjoy the fact that old ladies, when I hit them with my car, behave somewhat realistically. I like the fact that the car controls are harder to handle. I really liked the story. If it weren't for the annoying friendship simulation part of the game, it would be practically perfect to me(the worthless money is pretty annoying, though).

Similarly, I love World of Warcraft. He said some nice things about it, but his ultimate conclusion was, to me, straight out of insanity. MMOs aren't about numbers. I know people like to kid themselves and think they are, but they're not. It's not the numbers that actually get people, it's the goals. MMOs are very goal oriented. I have to do A so I can do B. Once I can do B, I can get ready for C. Once C, D, E, F, and G are done, maybe I should work on H. Numbers don't enter the equation, they're merely a vehicle.

When things like this happen, when something I love is taken apart by a critic, sometimes it hurts. But I realize that MMOs aren't for everyone. GTA IV isn't for everyone. Not everyone likes what I like, not everyone loves what I love.

So I get over it. I like what I like and I'm not ashamed of it.

I preordered Alpha Protocol and went into the game without any bias at all and fully enjoyed it.
I also went into the game, not knowing much about it beforehand - my personal opinion was it started out well, but it was far too much of the same. There's some really nice stuff in there, but the game just felt too long to me.

For me, when I read critic reviews, I'm not interested in the overall opinion, but the bits they liked and didn't like and why. If the controls are clunky, chances are I won't enjoy it. If playing the game is just plain fun, then chances are it'll make up for a poop story.
Majority of graphical glitches I can ignore.

At one point I felt like the only person who really enjoyed Borderlands, due to the amount of hate that game got... not that I care :D. I know my opinion is my own, so won't change it just because a whole load of people think differently. Key to interpreting reviews is to colour it with your own judgement lol.

Since I'm such a big fan of the so bad it's good kind of movies, I make it a point not to take the opinions of critics to heart. Which turned out to be a good thing since it helps me ignore Yahtzee constantly bashing on the classic Resident Evil games, which are some of my favorite games of all time.
