When did Call of Duty become an insult to gamers?

For some time now, I have encountered this argument, and in various forums. Anytime someone talks about a game in a negative light, the fanboys and girls use this retort as their shield and sword:

"go bak 2 call uv dooty nub" or some variant to that.

If I complain about the Witcher 2 not having a proper tutorial, someone will inevitably tell me to go back to Call of Duty. It's either that or Dragon Age 2 is mentioned, as both games are made for the ritalin-popping and/or drunken frat boy masses due to their simplistic gameplay.

I've played a lot of online games and CoD has the worst and most frequent trolls. However, when someone tries to insult you with that shitty grammar, you should probably just threaten to tell their mom they're being stupid on the internet again.

CoD prolly became an insult to gamerssomewhere around WaW and MW2, 1-3 were cool but getting boring, then Modern Warfare 1 came in, gave everything a nice new twist, then WaW came back with the same thing that 1-3 was and then MW2 was baiscally MW 1 with some shiny new paint.

Snobs just dislike whatever's popular at the time. It happens to be CoD now, so that's what they'll bash. It's the same reason people bash, say, Justin Beiber or Twilight or Harry Potter - instead of simply not caring about things that have nothing to do with them.

As for CoD - I think it's popular for very good reasons. For once, it let us play what a lot of us truly wanted in a game. Pick up a modern day rifle and take part in a big war as it would be fought today. For me, personally, it really struck a chord. I'm so sick of using WWII era weapons, I'm so fed up with killing Nazis and frankly I don't buy "terrorists" as a convincing, menacing OpFor. Give me a TAR and a USP any day. And whether or not people would admit it, CoD did the whole modern warfare thing well. That's why it's popular.

I have no idea what people have against COD as far as my male friends tell me I'm not a real gamer unless I play it despite you know playing games since I was freakin 5 years old (1986). *cough*
It surprised me that this site seems to not like it very much tbh. I know why people don't like dragon age 2 however, it's rubbish compared to Origins.

The game is overly simple to play, its largely console based (which apparently makes it less "refined") and a large number of its players are obnoxious teens. (not all, I'm generalizing)

Call of Duty (competitive multiplayer) is a Sport, pretending to be a game. Worse still, it succeeded (being the highest grossing franchise in gaming, and all). It threatens to destroy values the gaming community has held dear for decades(complexity, depth, challenge, attention to detail.etc.), and that corners us. And as the saying goes. "A Cornered Animal Is A Dangerous Animal".

It baffles me how people can somehow derive superiority from a video game, they aren't exactly status symbols. It'll always confuse me.

They think that what types of game you play dictate your intelligence and/or age.

I oversaw an argument between a person and another person because person X was watching some Dead Island gameplay while person Y was ragging on the lack of guns and the emphasis on melee combat.

Person X responded with that simple retort. This entire argument was rather existential for me because I can recall arguments where I've done the same thing.

I frankly sympathise with Person X.

It's become a curse word because a great many people who are not qualified to judge games demand that everything be like Call of Duty (with their wallets) and negatively influence game design. I'm not saying Call of Duty is bad (I would be lying if I said that I like it though, personal opinions and all that jazz), just that I don't want every game to mirror it's style.

Simple responding to every criticism that goes against your opinion with "Go back to Call of Duty" is not valid however.

Only in circumstances like the above, where people hating on a game because it's not exactly like CoD, completely merits that retort, IMO.

Because it basically has control of the industry. When people who arn't gamers look at the medieum, Call of Duty is almost always the first gaame they see. Now CoD is a good game, great explosive set pieaces, best controls for any FPS (IMO), and some increadibly fun multiplayer. But the proplem is that it is far from the best of games to represent the industry. Not to mention it is a constant cash crab, only making minor tweaks and selling at a full price tag (higher in the UK, it has a price bump over other games) every year. Then there are CoD players who seem to not even give other games ago, granted lots of CoD players do player other things but there is a minority who only play CoD and don't even seem to notice all the other games, some of which they may enjoy.

I don't rly know, thats just a guess.

There are millions of players out there that play nothing but CoD, and consequently don't know what they're talking about when discussing any other game.
It's not too much of a stretch to assume, when someone doesn't know what they're talking about, that they're one of these people.

Ill admit I know alot of people who solely play CoD and Fifa. I have thought it as an insult before but I dont think ive ever actualy said it as I also know alot of people who play it who have played MORE games then me.

Its an insult towards the person not the game. The games fairly balanced and does try new things when sequels com'a'calling which is better then alot of other games. Still kind of ignorent to say it though.

Because it's popular. Sure it's not the best game ever but on it's own merits it's a damn sight better than a lot of games. The reason for the hatred is purely due to how popular it is amongst less 'serious' gamers, and it basically comes down to snobbery.

This is nothing new, really. World of WarCraft, Halo, and Gears of War have all dealt with it too.

Eventually something new will come out and become very popular, then it will attract all of the hate away from CoD just like CoD did with everything else. I can pretty much guarantee that.

I don't think I can agree. I'll see a news report of some variety (...fox...) on the topic of games, and they almost always use footage of CoD unless they are talking of a specific game. And I'm ASHAMED of it. We have amazingly beautiful, compelling, and artistic games, and yet what we are known for is people killing people in a pretty boring way (people killing people can be really cool). I guess not only the fact that is popular, but popular, and, dare I say, immature.
