When did "casual" gaming become such a horrible thing?

I do admit I've never played The Darkness. It did look pretty interesting from the previews I saw, but I never got around to trying it.
Really you need to try it! The story was REALLY well done and it has a wonderful mood.
Agreed just do not do the harmonica sidequest before the last chapter otherwise you will be fucked and unable to finish the game. The last area just won't load.

Having read the topic (which is obviously inspired from our mutual friend's, Peggle review) I have only this to say, I don't think that casual gaming is bad. Not all humans in the world have time to play games 24/7. Casual games are just a genre, like FPSs, RPGs, Strategies etc, etc, etc. I don't see why is it so bad ? I could comment on all the stuff that are discussed on this topic, but I'd rather just to stick to the main "question".

PS: By observing how everyone on this topic talk, I have something to say: You all watch too much Zero Punctuation!!! (Birds of a feather aren't we ? :p) XD

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is just like any other WW2 FPS, but since WW2 shooters are based in reality, can't fault them for it.
Khell, when is the last time that you've seen an army of demon zombies in a WW2 game? lol j/k

I agree with TC completely, being a "hardcore" gamer is not something that should be desired by anyone. In the same way I wouldn't call myself a "hardcore music listener", a hardcore gamer is a ridiculous notion. It's just entertainment.

However, for all the flack he gives FPS's, they're popular because they're fun and I find them fun. The wii on the other hand, I find less fun, but that's just me.

Um, actually the thread was inspired by a remark I heard someone make, saying that the Wii sucked because "Nintendo sold out to the casual gamer." ZP had nothing to do with it.

Ok, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned since I mostly quick scanned the posts after the first 10-15... but I'd like to point out the reason I hate PC games compared to console games and the key words are "System Requirements". To actually be able to play any of the new "awesome" games on the PC you need to spend shitloads of money on the hardware. Money that isn't always easy to get hold of.

Now back to the real topic. I like the fact that the Wii is generally made for the casual gamers, I play games almost all the spare time I have yet I still prefer games that are fun to play but doesn't really require any "hardcore" involvement. Examples of games I love because of this are Mario Kart, which just turned awesome thanks to the Wi-Fi function on the Wii, which means that I can, at any time of day, just sit down and play a few matches against people all over the world and not feeling like I need to play several hours and/or join some kind of clan to pwn the n00bs. Another game I'm gonna play like crazy without ever being "hardcore" is Smash Bros Brawl (as soon as they let us Europeans have it...). I loved the previous games and I look forward to having fun and friendly battles with my friends.

You "hardcore" gamers have your platforms, so let us casual players have ours.

I would classify myself as a "casual gamer" for much the same reason others have stated. My life is full and I have very little time to dedicate to games. As a result I like games that I can pick up quickly and enjoy for as long as I am able. So many of the hardcore games that are out there these days are extremely difficult to pick up and their control logic rather esoteric. As a result I don?t have the time to figure them out and gain the expertise needed to enjoy them fully. They also tend to require long stretches of play time. I have to pause a 45 minute dvd show three times for all the intrusion from my real life. I can?t go on a raid in Molten Core or some shite like that and maintain my other responsibilities.

Being a casual gamer however does not mean I?m content with just 2D puzzle games. They?re good sometimes, but sometimes I like half an hour or an hour of alterative reality that a richer game environment provides. So I pop onto WoW of CoV for a short spell every now and again. I still don?t have so much as single level 70 or 50 respectively in either, but I don?t think I need complete strangers teabagging my corpse or shouting ?noob? at me because my girlfriend wants sex.

All of you are starting to sound like my friend, the Nintendo freak. He basically doesn't give anything that isn't either made by Nintendo or on a Nintendo console (either handheld or console) a chance with few exceptions. And basically, he says that all shooters are the same. Sure they all LOOK the same, even I admit it, but play the game first and then judge. You'd be surprised how different Half-Life is from Halo and CoD4 and other FPS's. I even made a competition with my friend that if I could find a shooter that convinces him is not like the rest i get $50. Metal Gear 4 might be the one!
I have a friend JUST LIKE THAT! He gets really worked up about the stupidest litlle things sometimes. He thinks that Nintendo is God and everything else is blasphemy! Lol.
In the words of Morgan Webb (Xplay) "You're either a Nintendo fan, or you arn't" and that is basically the sad truth.

Really? I did that side quest and didn't have a problem.
It is a well executed game. I thought the scene where you cuddle on the couch with your girlfriend (and watch To Kill A Mockingbird) was as close to an authentic relationship as I'd even seen portrayed in a videogame. But I digress.....

Play it!

I always figured that casual gaming wasn't liked by most "hardcore gamers" on the point that nobody likes the game developers making concessions for a different demographic. Aside from that, you've also got the (somewhat accurate) notion that casual games add in a disproportionate amount of luck over skill, so they tend to be a lot less satisfying to people who are "game savvy".

And I'm still waiting for Mahjong Universe for the DS.
