When Did Our Teachers Become Pansies?

Have any of you noticed that our teachers in schools have gotten less strict, less controlling of the class and generally have become push-overs? I've only recently noticed that respect for teacher authority has dropped drasticly over the past 3 years in middle school. Back in the day the rules were sit down, shut up, don't talk or your gone, now the teachers have lost their nerve and the class becomes a zoo. Kids text on phones, listen to Ipods when they should be working, kids are yacking non-stop and the teacher for the most part does nothing.

It's become so common that teachers usually won't resist or they'll get into an all out battle for control of the classroom, either way class time gets wasted. Marks have dropped, tests have become easier and still most kids get 65% on average. When the hell did this all happen? When did our teachers spend half the class telling everyone to be quiet? Why isn't anyone sent to detention, the ring-leaders are pretty obvious? When did our teachers become pansies?

I find it ridiculous because they always talk up these teachers to be hardcases with zero tolerance for your bullshit and when you get there it's like they fear the class! Now they won't even adequatly punish a person who's out of control. How the fuck did this happen?

It's called lawsuits. People are bitches and they don't like it when there kids come crying home because they can't take a lil yelling to the face!

Or something like that is my guess.

Yeah, treat our brats like royalty or we'll hire an army of lawyers and sue your ass.

I never ran into that at my school...but that's probably because our teacher was a seven-foot-tall ex-marine.

Yeah, that's probably why.

An overflow of electronic information drastically reduces the significance of everything. How can teachers teach kids who can't learn?

Personally I think that schools should be intellectual proving grounds, where when the intelligent and able become visible, more attention is payed towards them, so that they may have the greatest impact on the future. Those who do not should be taught vocationally to keep the gears of their nations well-oiled and functioning.

Above all, I agree that teachers are pansies these days because they are forced to be. However I wish that wouldn't compromise a possibly more extensive education because some retard behind me can't keep up. If they show the will to keep up, then try to help them, but if they don't care, don't bother.

Hmmm well when I was in "High-school", my classmates had a lil game called 'break the teacher'. It's just that kids these days are ruthless, they want to hurt you and they will, maybe the teachers at your school just gave up or broke.

Exactly what I was going to say. To be honest, most kids need a good smack in the face to set them straight.

Lawsuits and the fact that their pay-to-work ratio is fsking ridiculous.

Would you want to work 80+ hours a week and only get paid for 40? Me neither.

I went to Catholic School where the students weren't QUITE as bad (I went to public school for a couple of years, and I seriously wished I'd stayed in private school...).

Gah. This statement just made me facepalm for some reason.

Anyway, I've noticed this somewhat, though it's more of a case of the Freshman at my school getting more obnoxious ("LOLOLOLOL I AM SOOOO COOL") yet the teachers still retain control.

I've had my Physical Science teacher just straight up yell at the entire class, and slam the door loudly, while also making sure we didn't get to do any enjoyable hands-on projects for the duration of the next two weeks.

Then again, I live in the South.
Hm....

A social Studies teacher at my old school doesn't care what parents think. He carries around a golf club, throws student's objects out his second story window (which he disabled the suicide lock), and calls kids dumbasses and retards (although, only when they are actually being stupid). He's a crazy old man.

Since teachers have been denied most of their effective means of disciplining a class, an average teacher cannot assert his or herself to an increasingly indifferent set of students who don't want to be in school, and so loses control of the class.

It's a shame, really :(

Very different where I went to school. Someone flipped out and ran out of the sports hall during the lesson, our teacher sprinted after him, caught him & sent him down to admin. He was a good laugh too, had joke names for everyone in the class.

My english teacher was quite different. He had a quiet authority about him despite being laid back. Nobody really bothered to act up during lessons because he wouldn't actually do anything then, but the head of year would hear about it and he was something entirely different: You could be having a friendly conversation with him about something and he would be nice as anything, but if you misbehaved enough to be stood before him and have to explain your actions... Well you would've needed new underwear.

I have a teacher that will desk fight the students. It's quite entertaining.

Teachers are attempting to become the student's friends in an attempt to alter the teaching career into something more easy. I do think you're making a gross generalization so far as "teachers are panzies" considering I have a "learn at your own pace" school where the teachers give you the project and the book and only answer questions when they come up and I still have teachers that do the whole, "shut up or your out" thing. It's simply individual ideology as to how teachers are supposed to work. All things considered with the work force and what teachers deal with on a regular basis, I wouldn't call them "lazy".

I highly doubt you've got to deal with a shit-ton of rowdy kids a day. It's not easy, and I don't blame them for wanting to make it just a little bit so.

As an American, I'll go on record to state that politically correct chickenshit parenting has infected the public school system here in America. Now I'm no right-winger or anything, but there is a tremendous difference between actually disciplining students and making sure that no one's "feelings" are hurt for whatever retarded reason.

How many schools have you gone to? Unless you work in the education system, I highly doubt that you have experience in more than four schools and that's still an unlikely bet. I would actually wager that you've only gone to the one high school and you're probably not even finished with that. From this, what the hell makes you think you're aware of the changes that have occured at every school? Your school might have changed but other schools may have not, assuming that all schools are on the slippery slope to mediocrity based on your personal experience is an extreme example of idiocy. If I gave you a white dog would you then claim that all dogs are white?

Whats more interesting is that you way well be correct, in a way. America is generally ranked poorly compared to other countries in it's teaching and this hasn't been improving over the years. Thing is though, this change has been taking place for many years, not in the short jump from middle school to high school that you've witnessed. I'm kind of annoyed because this thread could have been about something more than just personal reflections that don't really represent anything, a comparison of stats and what have you.

Answer: since they removed the teacher's right to enforce some sort of discipline on bad behaviour. What you get is a bunch of toothless tigers which the children have no respect for. There's nothing more pathetic than an empty threat.
