.....over the line????
Toeing it beautifully ;) Though these days it seems to be grenades :p

OT, younger kids just generally seem to be far more arrogant these days, but then again, maybe that's what we appeared to be like to the generations before us. I like to think that I've turned out all right, [sub][he writes, sitting in an empty house on the internet at half three in the morning][/sub] so who's to say they'll be any different?

At school my experience was as you hit Sixth-form the teachers take a more hands-off approach and relax. They expected us to be mature enough to get the work done, and by and large we did. Then again, that was a Public School, so there were certain standards expected of us and all that jazz.

All that said, more discipline would be good to keep the unruly in order and to maintain a learning environment where needed. Some teachers do indeed suck at commanding respect from their students, and that's no good for anyone.

Depends where you live.

I'm a teacher, and my hands were quite literally tied. I wasn't ALLOWED to enforce shit in my classroom. The extent of the discipline I was permitted to carry out was detentions (to which a kid would oftentimes not even show up) or call the parents (who didn't even answer or give a shit 80% of the time). All the while the administration adopted a "you deal with it and stop bothering us" attitude.

You know we're not even allowed to fail students under the current system? I've had grade 11's that can scarcely read or write properly.

I don't work in the youth sector anymore. I was sick of the governmental bull.

Gah. This statement just made me facepalm for some reason.

Anyway, I've noticed this somewhat, though it's more of a case of the Freshman at my school getting more obnoxious ("LOLOLOLOL I AM SOOOO COOL") yet the teachers still retain control.

I've had my Physical Science teacher just straight up yell at the entire class, and slam the door loudly, while also making sure we didn't get to do any enjoyable hands-on projects for the duration of the next two weeks.

Then again, I live in the South.
Hm....
Yeah, I once lived in the South too, and my teachers (most of them, at least) have been able to keep control of the classroom, mostly through loud, strict outbursts and guil-trips. Then I moved to Arizona in the Southwest, and though the teachers have a bit more trouble here, they still retain more control than the teachers of some friends of mine up North. I honestly think it's because the Southern schools are tougher and are therefore able to ensure that kids grow up into responsible adults. Kids who are disciplined every once in awhile actually turn into regular human beings.

Huh, how about that?

It's because people complain and ***** and moan
for example at my high school my french teacher bitched out a girl and mad her cry because she was being a twat and whenever he called on her she did not know where we were, she also talked and txted all class every class, keep in mind french is an elective,
this occured all year
5 days before the end of the year he lost it and flipped shit on her
2 days later theres an inquiry going on about him being "abusive" and her mother is threatening to sue him and the school district
he might even lose his job over it
thats why teachers are pansies
cunts like her

I remember I saw something on the Daily Show where he was interviewing this woman. She said teachers aren't allowed to grade in red ink because it makes the child feel bad. I go to my teacher later on and asked them if they was true. She said yes. They are told in training to not use red ink for that sole reason.

It could be administration telling them to act a certain way...or it could be that they are just a bunch of pansies.

There's the whole parents will come and get us.

There's also the fact that by punishing the student does not help him. Punishing a students tends to turn him against you. You're not attacking the source of the problem. You're just finding a quick way to protect yourself.

Although, Middle school teachers tends to be harsher. The whole 7-8 grade area is when the class tends to think a bit for themselves.

Our teachers became/become 'pansies' when parents neglect to parent, until little Brutus comes home and claims that the big bad teacher tried to do their job and teach the class, and when Jr. acted up they actually dared to discipline him!

Teachers are not only teachers, many of them try to fill the role of 'parent' when a good number of kids lack descent parenting and discipline (and who often act up or are little shit-sticks in general).
Teachers get the shit-end of the stick, while the parents get off scot free. You want teachers to have the upper-hand? Start doing something about the parents who don't give a hoot about their kids actions, until the little brat comes home crying that life was actually unfair for once.

They're legally bound. Even throwing a student out of class for misbehaving can be job-threatening. The school is legally responsible for students when they are supposed to be in class, if a teacher tosses a kid out on his ass, and then the little shit goes and gets himself in trouble, it's possible that the teacher and school can be sued for that.

It's because parents expect everyone else to raise their kid right, and refuse to enforce any kind of discipline because that might damage his already sociopathic little psyche.

I lucked out to get the last round of tough teachers before they all became sissies. My brother wasn't so lucky. Watching him blow through his pathetically easy classes with borderline retarded teachers makes me fear for humanity. Doesn't help that half the classes are in Spanish, and for every John there's 4 Jose's.

Personally I think that schools should be intellectual proving grounds, where when the intelligent and able become visible, more attention is payed towards them, so that they may have the greatest impact on the future. Those who do not should be taught vocationally to keep the gears of their nations well-oiled and functioning.
You know whats awesome? You have just described what public schooling was like before the department of education. Now, what you describe is referred to as "tracking." See, parents don't like the idea of their kids being stupid, and thus placed in classes that have lower expectations of their abilities. So, every class is equalized to teach at the same rate.

Hoo-fucking-ray.
Quoted for complete and utter truth.

Probably when it became illegal to smack them with a ruler, teachers became replacements for parents, and parents started being condemned for spanking their children/wouldn't discipline their children. I'd say it started gaining ground around the 1940-50s and exploded during the 1960-70s.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I learned to fear doing wrong. That belt on my rump when I was a child darn hurt. I fearfully respected my parents, not because I feared being hit, but because I knew that if I disobeyed them, there were consequences. Why has that simple and necessary concept become so evil?

My chem teacher is Mormon, I just recently figured out. I'm well behaved in all my classes
EXCEPT for chemistry. Just something about the class. Anyways, him being Mormon probably has something to do with why he hasn't murdered me yet. I don't text though, and I have pretty good grades so I guess it's alright.

This is true. When children spend most of their time around teachers during the day, the teachers soon become their primary role models, and hence fulfill the "parenting" role more than most parents!

So in effect, the government is actually preventing proper parenting by disallowing teachers to actually discipline children.

The school system is so broken. I'm considered practically a genius in my school, while in reality, I'm pretty average. In my honors English class many kids have problems reading aloud, and in physics I am asked waay to often to help other students with simple algebra. Oh, I almost forgot, in my English class, most kids can't spell for shit.

In general, teacher really haven't been instilling enough discipline, mostly because they're afraid of *gasp!* lawsuites.(spelling?)

There are exceptions, however. Such as my English and history Teachers. Both of them have been in the navy(With the latter still being in reserve), both of them are fucking hilarious, both of them scare the shit out of me, and most importantly, they won't hesitate to verbally humiliate you in front of the class.

Sadly, such teachers aren't very common.
