Yes? Kind of it's pandering and ego stroking at least.
I think you just described every modern Bioware RPG XD
There is no need to be so limiting I have described nearly every modern video game. Fanservice itself isn't bad per say. People love it. That is why it is called fan service. Though too much of it is bad for you. It's like candy and games are chocked full of candy.

Dark Souls 3 I guess, well, series fanservice, apperantly Andre was alive for at least thousands of years? And so is Catarina?
Catarina isn't a person. It is a nation. The character in DS3 is named "Siegward of Catarina". The characters from DS1 are named Siegmeyer and Sieglinde of Catarina. Siegmeyer dies in the plot of DS1.

But I do not know why Andre is still around though. I guess he was branded by the darksign after all, so he couldn't die, and he found constant solace in his smithing, so he never turned hollow? Irunno.

I may have an explanation for that. A concept that they planned on but never got around to putting into Dark Souls 1 was that Andre was Gwyn's first born son. Maybe they're still keeping that in mind.

No, Gwyn's first born would be...
The optional boss, "Nameless King", whose item descriptions and soul make several clear points towards him being the lost son. You can find info about it on some of the wikis. http://darksouls.wikia.com/wiki/The_Nameless_King

Ah. He's got an official son now? Huh. Didn't know that.

Like Hades pointed out, the stupid fanservice is nothing compared to how they stripped the story of any uniqueness or conflict.

I miss the days when Fire Emblem had more sensible character designs (especially the Cube/Wii era). It's one thing to put your dancers in skimpy outfits or to have combat maids running around the battlefield, Fire Emblems were rarely that super serious anyway, but atleast give the knights some armour, you know?
Hear hear! I blame the recent veer towards anime. The old class models were fantastic.

Anime influences shouldn't even be an excuse. For instance, this is Raquna, your tank in Etrian Odyssey Untold:

Raquna likes to wear her sailor fuku-style skirt. Raquna also remembers to put on her goddamn armour in the mornings. Heck, she even remembers to wear layers, because metal on bare skin is not fun. Good job Raquna. Show the world you can be anime without increasing your chances of dying a dumb death!

My god, is that layered cloth and chain armor? I thought naught has existed for female characters since the heady days of yore! (2005)

But yeah, anime-esc armor can be really cool, as long as the designers remember where a person's major arteries are, that metal really chafes, that spikes pointed towards the body will only cause injury, and that riding in a saddle requires leggings of some sort.

Fire Emblem Fates is filled with fanservice that is to its detriment but of all of those I find the skimpy costumes pretty harmless compared to other types of fanservice. Its peanuts compared to

Ditching the very premise ''blood vs loyalty'' So you can make ''husbando's'' out of your blood siblings.

Downright copy pasting characters from Awakening and putting them in as complete clones

Take the children mechanic for no other reason then because it was popular, despite it having no place in the game. The result is a whole bunch of good characters that would have the most dignity if you consider them non canon.

Is the player character never ever being allowed to be wrong also a kind of fanservice?
Well you took the words out of my mouth.

But I will say I consider the Super Sexy Armor thing to be pretty stupid most of the time, as it DOESN'T suit the character 9 times out of 10. There's often bashful or serious characters parading their most intimate assets at any given time. The rambunctious, shameless or proud characters, sure! But it just doesn't work for everyone and it's distracting.

I like sexy girls, but the internet has no shortage of them. I play fire emblem for the strats and story.

I think caterina is a distant descendent. Siegmeyer had a daughter, after all. Andre is presumably either either an undead, or the first born of Gwynn, so it makes sense that he'd still be here.

I'm more annoyed about how that made one of the endings cannon. I killed gywndolin, what the hell is he doing in Dark Soul's 3?

Except her father's armor didn't have this little feature
Do you have a picture of her father from behind because now all I can picture is him in the family attire.
Charging into battle, both buttcheeks on display, waving a banner with "Real warriors put their ass on the line!" written on it being the family motto or something.

Am I just ranting? Do you think I have a point? Can you think of any other examples of this or do you think I'm just talking out of my ass?
Above mental imagery aside, yeah.
I prefer practical armour on warriors personally.
Doesn't faze me when the costumes you'd call fanservice attires are on mages or sorcerers.
Even some of the more lightly armoured classes can get away with it too.
Both of their primary methods of damage mitigation are different from that of a standard warrior who just takes that hit and shrugs it off.
When you're a front line warrior though, it just looks a little silly.

Barbarians are an exception to this.
Ragtag armour and loinclothed warriors are a tradition among that class type.

The truth is that Japan and the West have different cultural attitudes towards "fan-service" (probably women in general, but that's for another discussion).

I feel the same way about XCX's bikini armor (male and female), which arrives with fanfare as you upgrade vendors (just like every other vendor upgrade, just more obvious when the armor is super skimpy), but at least in XCX there are both functional and cosmetic armor slots, so we can choose how slutty our characters look regardless of which armor we need to use.
I think it's affected at least as much, if not more, that japanese art and humanity thought tends to believe in humans inner strength whereas western thought is more practically material minded.

Realistic armor is not the only way to go artistically. In fact, realistic armor ends up looking rather boring.

Not saying I'm a particular fan of the chainmail bikini, but there's more to looks than just a fanservice/realism spectrum.
I kinda doubt it. Japan experienced the same fantasy influences in the 70s and 80s (table top RPGs were pretty popular over there, as were things like Star Wars, lovecraftian horror and so on), and unprotected skin was a very common sight even back then. I think that if you're looking for cultural influences on designs, you're either going to get designs with classic Japanese influences (kimono, samurai armour, the stereotypical but historically incorrect ninja look) or stuff that feeds into whatever is popular with otaku at the moment (maids, school girls, monster girls, pop idols).

Whether you are ranting or not doesn't matter, as long as you make a point, which you certainly have.

Yeah, I first noticed this perverted design choice when I first played the MMO, Lineage 2. The heavy armour is very revealing and light on the female characters, and the dark elves even look like strippers when they begin with nothing.

I never liked it. It does screw with the immersion because our brains can tell straight away that those revealing armour designs won't protect shit!

What I would love to see is an option where you can choose to have the revealing or full body armour look, for both genders. It would require a little more work but it would make everyone a lot happier I believe.

I don't know ... frankly I think both men and women in games should have the option to look ridiculously under-dressed or over-dressed as they want (as those seem to be the only two options in games). Go full Zardoz with it. Boys and girls. Seems the fairest way to go about it.

Frankly, what ruins it for me is in games where armour is transferable between characters and inexplicably putting it on a female character they lose about a third of the coverage.

Like to point out to all the people saying 'its a fire emblem thing' Uh no, these designs didn't come in until the newer ones. Look back at the older ones and you got awesome designs that were equal for both sexes and it was awesome. I still miss the old Druid outfit >3>

When I saw the title, the first thing I thought was Quiet from MGSV. The End, anyone?
What bothered me most was Kojima swearing up and down that, once we knew her characters back story, we were going to feel super guilty and bad for criticizing his design choices. Yeah...

All this could have been forgiven if had had some foresight, and dressed The End up in a skimpy stripper bikini in Metal Gear Solid 3.

I thought you meant Fanservice that messes with the time line.

Dark Souls 3 I guess, well, series fanservice, apperantly Andre was alive for at least thousands of years? And so is Catarina?
That's a different kind of fanservice and has nothing to do with the topic the OP brought up.
Not really, it's a question of design ruining consistency in order to appease a fanbase.
I agree. My version of this is in Diablo 3. Male Witch-doctor is old and fun, female WD is hot and young. I wanted an old crone who is hexing the heck out of things.

Every other class the M/F age gap is much lower or nonexistent, makes no sense and reduces my enjoyment of playing female WD.
