It's understandable and it's all for da money. The Beta attracts potential customers, potential customers will buy the game and the game will make money.

Not that they need it, it's guarenteed to be the gaming equivalent of Avatar anyway. Maybe they just want all talk on the escapist to be about Halo Reach, as part of their evil plan.

.... okay?

Its a popular game, and lots of its players probably aren't hardcore forum going gamers, so it only makes the most sense that they try to reach everyone.

Also, you could look away from the screen, willpower is a wonderful thing.
hahaha my thoughts exactly (ish)

They maybe milking it but they do it the right way. Hype only goes as far as you take it. I've loved Halo ever since I first played on Christmas morning in 2001, before I even knew about the xbox (somehow). I love Halo for what it is, not how others make it.
I first played Halo on the PC, and then I was introduced to the Xbox haha
(I don't think it's milking as long as Bungie is making it...and this *is* their last Halo game...Microsoft will definitely milk the Halo franchise after Bungie has moved on, but hey I liked Halo Wars so I'm cool with it. especially with Frank O'Connor at the helm of 343 Industries)

funny cuz back in the day I gamed on my computer, and played some RTS games here and there and some other stuff
but seeing Halo, it was just like the one that got me into FPS games (which is why I don't like to compare and compete FPS games, since in the end it all comes down to which got me into the genre to begin with!)

Somehow I think a rather unpleasant phenonemon has occured, wherein any amount of advertising is acceptable as long as it's not Halo doing it. Seriously, there have been PLENTY of mainstream action games that have delivered popularised and flashy trailers either on the web or the TV or even movie theatres in the last few years, yet for some reason this is only an outrage if Halo does it. Why? Because I still can't shake the feeling that Hating Halo is still considered the 'cool' thing to do and thus anything that can be considered a publicity stunt is going to be recieved with angry internet bashing.
Honestly, regardless of whether or not you like Halo (if you don't I have no problem, it's just the bashing that is an issue) you have to admit Halo is certainly not the first game series to use flashy advertisements in order to get people interested and ou can bet it won't be the last.
I really fail to see the problem with a game having a marketting department, attempting to... you know... market the game to people.

As a note: I apologise if any of this came out obnoxious or fanboyish, that wasn't my intention.

I thought the TV ad was really cool! The music, especially, was great.

I see the point that the OP is making, but I don't think I can agree with it. Sure, on some level, the idea of a TV ad for a beta is a little ridiculous, but at the same time, when games these days have such large amounts of money invested in them, large amount of hype/marketing is essential to break even.

It's a perfectly legit marketing strategy. To play the Reach Beta you need to buy ODST which means more revenue for everyone. It's pretty smart from a business standpoint and that's what everything in the West revloves around.

I think you all are missing the point. He's complaining about the fact that it advertising a Beta. If that was the case I would agree with you, however upon actually watching the commercial I don't really see it that way. It seems more like "HEY EVERYONE GEY EXCITED FOR HALO REACH . . . BTW there's a beta." What I am wondering is why bring it up when you don't have a release date? I thought that would have worked much better. [Insert date here] or even Fall 2010 and then say there's a beta.

It's getting people interested in the game earlier.. doesn't seem like that bad of an idea to me.
It's a stupid idea because a beta isn't the real game.

I guarantee you 99% of the people that saw that ad don't even know what a beta is. It's when you test a game for bugs and issues, it's NOT a final product.

SO why the fuck is it being advertised??

It's pretty much advertising for a HALF ASS product considering the state it's now in. I mean there wasn't even any header that the point of that ad for testing a game, they just spent buckets of money for nothing!!
I wonder if this ties into their "We are expecting an unprecidented amount of people to participate" thing they were talking about? It seems much easier when you advertise it on TV.

Well yeah, that's my argument, a TV commercial for a beta is just too much.

But what ever, next when they start advertising for pre textured screen shots or if they start advertising for advertisements I'll keep my thoughts to my self since everyone seems to think it's a good idea...0o

Not trying to sound like a fan boy, but they are just letting the population know about the game. The Beta is basically an advertisement. But what did you expect from the same series that brought you Halo 3 Mtn Dew?
Advertising an ad, I see what they did there.

Every hype sucker only needs to get sucked into hype once to realise that hype is bullshit. I was sucked into the hype of Halo 3 and was dissapointed. I haven't been sucked in since. I would guess that most of the population here has had an expirience similar to mine and now no longer get sucked into the hype around anything.

And this is an issue because?
I mean, it's their marketing, they haven't done anything questionable or bad, it's just that they're generating hype for their game.
The bigger issue, imo, is people running around and shouting about it being overhyped and overrated.

Trust me, betas aren't pretty, and this was stupid idea.
Really? Because, at last count, I've participated in three different betas, and all of them turned out fine. They might not be as pretty as the final game, but they aren't terrible.

Also, since when was testing a game before releasing it a bad idea? People were complaining about that with Modern Warfare 2 and how that was buggy. IW should beta test, but not Bungie? anyway, if you don't want to play it, don't. You don't have to be the champion for the small group of people who bought ODST but don't want to play Reach.

I don't see the problem with it. Maybe because I don't hate Halo, but even so, even if it were a different game (one that I dislike) I wouldn't see the problem with them advertising a Beta. People like it, Bungie is paying for the ad, some people probably don't know that Halo Reach Beta is coming on May 3rd, so I actually think it's a nice way to advertise. It'll also raise Halo 3: ODST sales, so it's a smart move.

It can't be worse that those really stupid commercials.
