Well obviously the first time was justified. I don't know about the second time. It depends on what he was saying and if he was drunk.

Always, there's always a good excuse to pick a fight!

Seriously though, you should only punch someone if they insulted you, your family, your homeland or if you're about to be attacked.

It's never RIGHT to punch someone, but that doesn't mean it's wrong either. I know that doesn't seem to make sense. In fact, it's an oxymoron, but... well, violence is bad. Obviously. Harming any living thing is terrible, so it's never right, but if it's unavoidable, then it isn't wrong. In a kill-or-be-killed situation, killing someone isn't right, but defending yourself isn't wrong.
I disagree. When someone crosses the basic moral line all humans as rational beings are accountable to (ie, rape, kidnapping, murder, tyranny, abuse or any of a hundred other similar things), it is fully and undeniably right to maim them. People who cross that line must be punished, and punished severely.

The problem there is that as long as they don't make it physical, all you're doing is imposing your will on them. Modern western civilization is based around freedom of speech, and by threatening violence whenever they say something you don't like, you are impinging on that right. That doesn't make them any less stupid (probably) for saying it, but they have a right to their own opinion and it's not yours or anyone else's place to dictate what that should be.

When they insult your family or call you an offensive name, or throw a punch first. But don't just punch. Grab em, punch the shit out of him, and SMASH THEIR HEADS AGAINST THE WALL OVER AND OVER AGAIN! *evil laugh* Alright I'm done.

When is it right to throw a punch??

when she doesn't have supper cooked when you get home...

but in all seriousness, I have never been in a fight, even though I have tried a few times, so I have no idea how it feels to be punched, or throw a punch.

In self defence? Definitely.
Because you're drunk? Well, no, but it happens to the best of us.
Usually, both parties are drunk, though, so no real harm done.

When do you throw your punch? When you dropped your kick. ^_^

Only in self-defense and even then, it's usually safer to back away. If you must use your fists, you don't have enough self-control/witty comebacks.

I don't punch people, I punch things.
Such as doors, tables, windows etc.
I get kinda violent when I'm angry.

Then you are quite stuffed. I'm going to assume they're bigger and stronger than me anyway so running would still be best.

Step 1 - Run
Step 2 - Run Faster

And if both of those fail, there is always Plan C. "Run to the Hills, Mike!"

If they physically make contact with you in an agressive way (Agressive, in this case, meaning push, punch, slap, etc). Also, if tempers are running high, and someone threatens you or your family, make sure they understand that they are stepping into dangerous territory. If they continue to threaten the safety of you and yours, then maybe (make-sure to have witnesses).
