I used my CD ROM just last night to install Team Fortress 2 since everyone's all over it being Free now. I bought it with Orange Box a long while back. It sure beats the extra couple of days downloading it through my rock & string internet connection. Now all I have to worry about is getting past Steam freezing up and the extra few days of updating it!

Also I use my CD ROM all the time for DVDs and Games, though games not so often.

Well, when?

I mean,
-Games are pretty cheap in steam, and you dont have to swap the cd if you want to switch games. Also.. *cough file hosting websites have a pretty good download speed these days, if you know what i mean.
-Most softwares that you really need to use are now available from/on the internet(google docs, skype).
-People who buy music (hah, thats a good one), would most likely bought it from itunes. LOL at popping an album cd just to hear it.
-[moar generic statement on how cd/dvd/whatever-rom drive is obsolete]
We do not tollerate pirates on the escapist.
You speak for no-one other than yourself. It's pathetic how many people so readily cast themselves into the role of moral-arbiter on this site, without being asked to. Just consider the idea that you might be wrong. We're a species that can't decide when murder is appropriate...this is just copyright infringement.

OT: I recently upgraded to a mobo with no IDE, making my ancient DVD drive useless. Surprisingly I missed it almost immediately.

When I do use it, its almost entirely for DVDs or game discs. But everything is increasingly becoming digital for me. All the Blizzard games I own I digitized and have on my hard drive through the Battlenet website. Any music I buy these days comes from Amazon with no physical copy or discs to speak of. Not to mention the digital copies of films that come with many purchases that I just store on an External HDD.

Got an album from a friend month or so ago, on a CD. It was odd for a moment there... music on a physical disc. As much as the nostalgia might start tripping when I find old CDs- I have to admit that things have improved for the better when it comes to data and information.

Lemme see....
About a month or so ago to install Win7
Within the past 48 hours to install Diablo II via WineTricks in Linux for a friend
Right-freaking-now to watch my DVD copy of Angels & Demons
Any time I watch my Quickflix DVD's (they do ~NOT~ provide digital downloads here)
Any time I watch a DVD of any source really (video store rentals, my whole fucking library of DVD movies & shows with around 400 titles)
Any time I burn my Kamen Rider or Super Sentai subs to watch on the TV (or for friends to watch on their TV/computer)
Any time I use my Discman

30 seconds ago so that I could install Dawn of War.

Anyhow I prefer to at least have a physical copy of my stuff before I transfer it to digital. This is mainly true for my music; I detest itunes. However I would buy more off steam if my internet was better.

Today. The 1950's Batman movie, Alice: Madness returns for PS3, The Black and White Album by The Hives, and my vinyl copy of "Cavalcade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms" by Venetian Snares. Four disks. On a slow day.

That's right, bitches, vinyl. You guys can take your digital media and suck it.

The last time I played a disc game on my desktop was "Crysis" with a graphics mod a couple of months ago. My computer crashed. My computer dislikes "Crysis" and can't live with its toasty tropical splendour.

wow, some pretty harsh anti piracy here in escapist. first forum ive ever into where video gaming is serious business and not mere child's play. i like it here. im an asian from what is probably a third world country, piracy is part of growing up.

no, i don't think piracy is right, but no i don't publicly condemn it, like other sensitive stuff which i think if i mention here will start a pretty fiery discussion. yep i am as guilty as an elderly pederast but i hope i can change from now on.

yes, i will buy my 'good' games from now on. for biles like dnf, i think i can live without playing it. for games with scores like 7/8, i guess i just have to keep myself busy long enough to not to download it off somewhere, i mean its not deus ex good right?

EDIT :aw... and come on, moderator wrath for admitting piracy? its like setting a leper on fire. I know leprosy is disgusting but at least you can just let him be, so he can die peacefully?

OT :i own a pocket external hard drive which i used to store/back up some stuff and i just never use cd for file storage any more. the drive is somewhat faster and have much more space. i thought everybody would do the same since it got pretty cheap recently. eh, proved me wrong.
About your spoiler: It's not that the users are staunchly anti-pirate, it's that the mods and administrators are -- to the point that admitting to piracy is usually a quick way to get banned. Piracy related threads almost always result in some sort of moderation, and as a result, the users tend to step really lightly around the issue. It makes open discussion of a very important topic in gaming kind of difficult, to the point that it just doesn't get discussed much anymore.

Oh wait, now I think about it, formatting my stupid desktop in the corner of my room which is basically useless atm :L.

I play a lot of old-school games (such as Baldur's Gate and Diablo 2), and you need the CD in the drive to play those, so I actually use mine quite often.
