Wasn't this rumor supposed to die with the release of the movie / crisis core?

As much as I liked the game, I don't see much point in fanboys forcing Square to beat this dead horse more than it already has.

NO. REMAKE. What would be the point of it?
Please they just should do concentrate on making original (Or atleast good) games and especially some that don't fuck up the storys of previous ones. (Looking at you Crisis Core!)

I know, I live in an dream world..

It will be released in 2017, on the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII, and the last we will see of the Final Fantasy VII Compilation

The only reason that rumor seems to even exist is that Tech Demo for the PS3 that came out, showing the opening of VII in real-time.

People put way too much stock in those tech demos (Like the reaction Zelda: Wind Waker got after the "Link vs. Ganon" Gamecube demo).

What gets me is that people who bring up the VII-Demo ("Well, why would they go to all that trouble if they weren't..." and so on) completely forget that when the PS2 came out, there was a tech demo of the ballroom dance sequence from VIII in real-time, and yet no VIII-remake (okay, it wasn't as popular as VII, but still...).

I couldn't care less if there's a VII remake; my Playstation copy works just fine, and the only thing that I might look forward to is compiling all four discs into one.

I never thought about it like that, makes sense when you think about it. Personally, I don't think Square Enix will ever make a remake of it, and even if they did I probably wouldn't buy it because I already know the entire storyline and conclusion. You can't buy a game based on graphics alone, they would have to add to it somehow.
Nostalgia

Thats what would sell it
plus loads of people who played Crisis Core

I say keep it as a Plan-B.

If they fail, they have something to rely on.
.... thats what I said they would do

I agree completely. Square won't do it until people stop caring.

I think it's probably going to happen after V and VI have been remade for the DS. Since III and IV have been remade in that fashion, it only makes sense.

FFVII wasn't a masterpiece of a game, sure it looked nice and had more spiky hair than a indiana jones deathtrap, but i found sephiroth to be a really lame villain, and the characters weren't all that great, not awful or anything, just meh.

I also hope that it NEVER EVER comes. Why is it constantly remake this and remake that? The originally is AWESOME, although the graphics are poor. Graphic upgrade = nice, but you know that is not all they will change. They always have a way of taking a great game and turning it into a mess when it is remade.

It's going to be a sad day when the gaming industry makes a major shift towards remakes. We already have a uncreative and lazy movie industry.

Of course, they want to make money.
If it's all going to shit, they'd remake one of the most popular games.
I think if XII and XIV fail, they may possibly remake it.
I don't want them to, I want to keep my memories.

Then why didn't it show up directly after FF12?

Anyway, I am of the opinion that the FF7 remake will never come. They have the original game on the PSN and they have bigger things to worry about. Like making a new game a good one. Final Fantasy 14 is going to be online...judging by how FF11 went, they have plenty of work ahead of them. Bothering with another FF7 related game would just be stupid at this point.

All i can say is it's very unlikely to come out as long as another ff game would sell better. Seriously, they'd need to create an engine from the ground up, redesign ALL the graphics, hire some voice actors... they would save the tiny proportion of time and money spent on writing. FFVII would sell to all the hardcore fans of FF AND some of the casual fans; a new FF game would sell to all the hardcore fans and MOST of the casual fans - there would be that part that have no interest in replaying it. I suppose they'd save on advertising due to word of mouth mind you.

All that said, i would still totally love to see a remake. I'd *enjoy* it immensly, I just don't see it as likely.

My opinion:
IF they don't screw it up, it would work. As much as we throw around the term fanboy, there is actually a large enough fanbase for this to work. Square Enix hasn't ruined the franchise yet, despite the sequel, the movie, the obscure cell game, and the PSP prequel(CURSE THAT FAD!!!), the franchise is still memorable and fun to play. Of course, to understand any of what's going on, you'd have to either wiki FF7 or hope to find it on EBAY. So by makng a remake, provided it's done right, they're going to save newer fans an immense headache. Of course, they could just buy it off of PSN, but it would be even better if updated with the epicness of the Complete edition film and Crisis Core. But that's just me.

Why not just re-play the original?
Because copies are extremely rare, PS2 is dying out, PS memory cards are hard to come by, and not that many people would care to download huge games like that to their hard drive.
-5 hours later-
Now downloading Disc 2

Square-Enix isn't above doing remakes. Everything up to six has gotten ported, some multiple times, and two have been given graphical upgrades. Chrono Trigger and FF:Tactics was ported with new stuff and new script. Square-Enix does recycle their own games into new products and

I think FF7 could use a make-over. In my opinion, the game had a solid story. It's graphics suffered because it was originally developed for the N64 before Square decided the Playstation's CDs would benefit it more. FF8 shows that they could have had much better graphics if it was originally build for the Playstation. Sure, Square-Enix may have shot themselves in the foot with the tech demo, using one of their most popular titles as the content. It sparked a greater flame of FF7 fans that want to see it remade with enhanced graphics. For the most part, the assets are there. They already made models of the FF7 cast for the tech demo, Advent Children, Dirge of Cerebus, Crisis Core, and even Dissida uses some.

Use the Crystal Tools engine, reuse the backgrounds, slap in new models, maybe tweak the script. Using a small development team to make the changes, they could put it out and give the fans what they've been clamoring for. Both the Japanese and US markets would jump at it. Probably won't be a major profit scheme, but could pull in some money and some new fans.
