Honestly, I don't think the best reaction to the last movies failure was "Let's drag the original cast out of their retirement homes". I think Ghostbusters just doesn't work as a movie franchise beyond the first one.
The IDW comics did a continuing story I think was ripe for movie potential and shows that it could be done. Not every arc is movie material, but there are plenty of ideas that could have been used for a movie.
At the same time the comics exist so I don't really need to see those on the big screen and it's not going to work with the original cast at this point (even if Ramis was alive).
I think there's plenty of potential for Ghostbusters as film or TV media. I just don't really think they shold bother with the original cast at this point. They don't want to do the 2016 version again, fine. but new actors in a reboot or new actors in a new franchise or something.
Because right now, we have one dead Ghostbuster, one who clearly doesn't give a crap, and one who is more interested in selling vodka in weird containers. Ernie Hudson might be the only one who gives enough of a crap to really make this work, and I'm not even sure about him. Yeah, everyone but Murray was onboard before, but would it have been a good movie even before Ramis died? Arguable.
I don't know. At this point, I think I'd rather see the 2016 line continue. Or no Ghostbusters at all. That might actually be a better idea. Or pull a Legends of To-Meow Meow and use puppets. But it's not so much that I think the franchise can't work. I think they often make dumb decisions with it. Starting with 2.
