When was the first time you heard a curse in a game?

So, it's 8 am and I haven't slept a wink. I'm very bored and and started thinking about random things and a though popped into my head. I was quite old the first time I heard a proper curse in a game.

I was a scaredy-cat as a child. I played mostly kid-friendly games, nintendo games, the sims etc. When I played Super Mario 64 I would cover my ears every time I died because Bowser's laugh scared me. I could never play Ocarina of Time past the bit where you grow up because the marketplace terrified me after that. So I never played any games with more grown up language, despite being an avid curser myself.

So it wasn't until my brother got GTA: San Andreas that I got to hear any curses really. And then both he and I where so bad at it we never progressed very far and usually just went around, joy-riding the city. It wasn't until Prototype that I heard a loud, clear "Fuck!" in an actual conversation. I remember it as quite the shock back then, I was used to games that didn't want too high ratings after all...

So, Escapists. When was the first time you heard a curse in a game and how did you react? Did you react?

Hmm.. I can't remember exactly, but I'm sure it was either Blood, Sin or Shadowman. One of those three games. All of them had in common a hell of a lot of violence and harsh language. So yeah, I honestly can't tell you how I reacted. Shit was a long time ago. I guess I would have thought it was cool, you know, little kid thinking swearing and shit is cool. As you do when you're young and silly.

Probably Halo, though I'm fairly certain I was cursing before I played them.

The first thing I remember hearing that was even slightly less than ultra conservative puritan wholesome dialogue in a vidja garme though was in Jak and Daxter. It was at the part where Daxter gets turned into an ocelot. I always found it hilarious. It goes something like "Samos always yaps on about the precursors. Who were they? Where did they go? And why did they leave all this crap behind?!" XD

Foul language I know, I apologize, but you asked OP XD

.hack//:Infection, but that's because it was the first rated T game we got on PS2 when we were kids.

It wasn't so much "hearing" it as reading it, but I think it might have been Final Fantasy VII. It was one of Barret's first lines of dialogue, but I can't remember exactly what swear it was.

I don't know when I heard one explicitly, but I do recall that you weren't supposed to do it at night in Castlevania 2.

As a small child playing Day of the Tentacle:

"I shall now examine you."

"ARE YOU GOING TO USE YOUR SCALPEL?"

"I don't have one."

"Dammit... DO YOU WANT TO USE MINE?"

"Err... no."

If that's not curse-y enough for you, then probably the first major cursing I heard in-game was from a brief time I spent in "The Longest Journey".

I think 'son of a *****' was said in Metal Gear solid, when I was about 8 or 9. The first time someone said 'Fuck' in a game I ever heard was....I think it was San Andreas. Also the first time I heard '****' in a game, too. Not that **** has been said often in games.

This is probably wrong and there's most likely an earlier case, but the earliest one I can remember is from GTA 3.

Naughty language in videogames seemed to happen so organically I hardly notice it in todays games.

Can't remember as it's so long ago, probably early 90s or late 80s Amiga/Commodore game.

One of the most memorable and favourite to this day was Carmageddon's "cunning stunt" bonus.

Same for me I know I've played plenty of mature games beforehand but the first time I took notice was in GTA3.

The first time I came across a curse in a video game was when Sly told Dimitri that his suit sucked in Sly 2. However, that probably isn't strong enough to really count.

Another game that comes to mind is Star Wars: Battlefront 2, as I remember the Stormtroopers and Rebels in the game frequently saying "Dam" or "Hell". I never played games like GTA back then.

Aside from that, there was Destroy All Humans! 2, which had a pretty fair amount of swearing for a T-rated game.

Dunno, I don't think of swearing as anything bad. My mom & uncle swore at eachother a lot when I was a kid, as common as seeing my teachers smoke cigarettes outside during recess. South Park swore all they could & my parents didn't care what they watched around me. I suppose it could be Serious Sam yelling "shit" & "damn" a lot.

My first game with cursing, though very minor cursing, was also my first shooter and war game. Call of Duty: Finest Hour.

I think it went a little like this
"It's been one hell of a day"

If you don't count that, then it was the game Metal Arms: Glitch in the System. Some general said "damnit!" or something along the lines of damn. Also if you have never played that game, go find it and buy it because it is amazing.

Being about as white as wonder-bread, playing San Andreas actually made me really uncomfortable because of how casually they used the "N" word. Before that though, I remember "Shit" being used a lot of Vice City and I didn't really think anything of it.

No Spoilers, don't worry.

Well, just 20 minutes ago I was playing the 400 Days DLC and told someone "Fuck You", so I guess that would be it.

wow got this far and no one else said conker's bad fur day?!?!

that was my first game that it happened in, i remember being excited as a kid because the game looked all colorful, and as soon as the first one came on i did a massive scramble to turn the volume down as my parents were in the next room over, i didn't want to miss out on this joyous gift from the heavens :) it was an amazing game that i cherished as a child.
