The only one I can remember distinctly is Final Fantasy VII, and all the swear words that were censored as a bunch of symbols.

I was a scaredy-cat as a child. I played mostly kid-friendly games, nintendo games, the sims etc. When I played Super Mario 64 I would cover my ears every time I died because Bowser's laugh scared me. I could never play Ocarina of Time past the bit where you grow up because the marketplace terrified me after that. So I never played any games with more grown up language, despite being an avid curser myself.
Heh, if it makes you feel better, I got OoT for Christmas when I was 5. I made it through the first dungeon and got to the first boss (Gohma) and turned off the game crying because I was so scared. It took me 5-6 years before I could conquer that fear and finally beat that dungeon! Only to find out there were much scarier bosses :(

It wasn't so much "hearing" it as reading it, but I think it might have been Final Fantasy VII. It was one of Barret's first lines of dialogue, but I can't remember exactly what swear it was.
This . I came here to say this . I was so shocked i thought my dad wouldn't let me play the game if he found out ! I lived in a no swearing home . I think he said Ass a lot .

The first thing I remember hearing that was even slightly less than ultra conservative puritan wholesome dialogue in a vidja garme though was in Jak and Daxter. It was at the part where Daxter gets turned into an ocelot. I always found it hilarious. It goes something like "Samos always yaps on about the precursors. Who were they? Where did they go? And why did they leave all this crap behind?!" XD
The line is "The sage yaps on about the Precursors who built this place all the time. 'Where did they go? Why did they build this crap?'" (Just played the HD version last weekend. First time 100%ing it! :D)

The latter part of that quote, along with "even the rocks do not recall" are the two parts of that game I'll never forget. Also he's an ottsel (otter+weasel).

OT: First time I heard a swear in a game? Huh... probably The Thing on PS2, which may or may not have been my first M-rated game.

Cannot remember. My mother used to take old folk songs and swap the lyrics with swearwords when she was angry.

Gee, I'm pretty sure that goes to Jak 3, when Daxter says "Damn straight!" Unless there was a swear earlier on in the game that I can't remember. I was plenty old enough to have heard almost every curse word under the sun by then, especially with my father being a semi-stereotypical construction worker, so I didn't have any reaction other than being a little nervous that my mom might hear. :p Though if you're looking for a stronger oath, I'm pretty sure inFamous was the first game I heard "shit" in and and king of swears ("fuck") wasn't until BioShock only a couple years ago. Ahhhhhh, gotta love Sander Cohen.

Thank ye kindly :)

I haven't played in ages. I only was able to play the trilogy through once on my friends PS2. :(

...And that entire opening quote is pretty awesome :D

Made even more awesome (in a funny way) by the answer to it. XD

The first time I remember there being cursing was Halo 3, being my first M rated game and having some foul-mouthed marines. I'm sure there was a time before that, though.

The first game with uncensored swearing in it that I played that I can remember was True Crime Streets of LA.

After beating the crap out of some random punk the players character, I forget his name, said "Stay the fuck down!"
If you want to count censored swearing, then that'd be most of the stuff Barret said in FF7. I don't consider words like hell or damn to be cursing.

Wow, I've never seen captcha get dismissive before.

Naughty language in videogames seemed to happen so organically I hardly notice it in todays games.
Wich is kinda why I got curious. Today no one will bat an eyelid is a videogame character curses. But to me, back when I was a kid there where far less games that had such language. "Dammit", "crap" and "shit" seems to be the first one most people heard and I don't think those are bad words at all. But "fuck", "****" etc are heavier and I'm curious if there was a point where gaming realised it could get away with it or if I just missed all the good dialogues. I find it interesting to see if we can see some sort of line in these experiences and when it was crossed.

I'm pretty sure the first game I heard the heavy duty F bomb dropped in was Gears of War. Then after that it was just everywhere.
Before that in all the games I was playing in the previous generation all I was hearing was "Shit"

Maybe I was just really ignorant at the time because I didn't hear one F bomb from the N64/Sony era nor did I hear any from the PS2 era.

Most likely Crazy Taxi. The people you picked up had a habit of saying "dammit" a lot in that game when you rammed into things, and it was even worse in the original arcade and Dreamcast versions where none of the songs that played during gameplay were censored. Thus, how the game got past the ESRB with just a T-raiting despite having a song that drops "Fuck" in its lyrics is beyond me.

Rats, someone beat me to it. To this day I wonder what curse words/combination of them actually was enough to make ten symbols, no spaces.

:p

Hm, the only one I can think of is cocksucker. Though something tells me the translation team wasn't thinking that hard about it. More symbols just meant they were angrier :p

I think it was Breath of Fire 2 for the SNES when one of the characters said "damn."

Hardly an affront to your virgin ears I'm sure. Keep in mind though that this occurred when Nintendo was hard set in it's family friendly image and was well known for editing content for American audiences to keep up appearances.

Barret drops a lot of uncensored "shit" "crap" and "ass" in the game. When AVALANCHE are on the train near the start and they're talking about how they think Cloud didn't make it, Barret says "Shi't!"

I never understood what the apostrophe was for.

I'm relatively sure it was either watching my cousin play GTA 3 or me getting all giddy when they said 'bastard' or 'crap' in FFIX. Given how ubiquitous casual profanity has been in my life since then, it's hard for me to remember a time where hearing this kind of thing would have shocked/impressed/excited me.

Hard to say, the 90's was a long time ago. Shadow Warrior has some good cursing moments, Blood was mentioned, Redneck Rampage was a good one. Honestly I cannot remember, however if you heard swearing from any game especially Mario Kart, It was me.

Yesterday! I was playing Sine Mora. And really, that game doesn't mince words.
