Heh, if it makes you feel better, I got OoT for Christmas when I was 5. I made it through the first dungeon and got to the first boss (Gohma) and turned off the game crying because I was so scared. It took me 5-6 years before I could conquer that fear and finally beat that dungeon! Only to find out there were much scarier bossesmaidenm said:I was a scaredy-cat as a child. I played mostly kid-friendly games, nintendo games, the sims etc. When I played Super Mario 64 I would cover my ears every time I died because Bowser's laugh scared me. I could never play Ocarina of Time past the bit where you grow up because the marketplace terrified me after that. So I never played any games with more grown up language, despite being an avid curser myself.
This . I came here to say this . I was so shocked i thought my dad wouldn't let me play the game if he found out ! I lived in a no swearing home . I think he said Ass a lot .ScrabbitRabbit said:It wasn't so much "hearing" it as reading it, but I think it might have been Final Fantasy VII. It was one of Barret's first lines of dialogue, but I can't remember exactly what swear it was.
The line is "The sage yaps on about the Precursors who built this place all the time. 'Where did they go? Why did they build this crap?'" (Just played the HD version last weekend. First time 100%ing it!T0ad 0f Truth said:The first thing I remember hearing that was even slightly less than ultra conservative puritan wholesome dialogue in a vidja garme though was in Jak and Daxter. It was at the part where Daxter gets turned into an ocelot. I always found it hilarious. It goes something like "Samos always yaps on about the precursors. Who were they? Where did they go? And why did they leave all this crap behind?!" XD

The latter part of that quote, along with "even the rocks do not recall" are the two parts of that game I'll never forget. Also he's an ottsel (otter+weasel).
OT: First time I heard a swear in a game? Huh... probably The Thing on PS2, which may or may not have been my first M-rated game.
Wich is kinda why I got curious. Today no one will bat an eyelid is a videogame character curses. But to me, back when I was a kid there where far less games that had such language. "Dammit", "crap" and "shit" seems to be the first one most people heard and I don't think those are bad words at all. But "fuck", "****" etc are heavier and I'm curious if there was a point where gaming realised it could get away with it or if I just missed all the good dialogues. I find it interesting to see if we can see some sort of line in these experiences and when it was crossed.mbarker said:Naughty language in videogames seemed to happen so organically I hardly notice it in todays games.
Rats, someone beat me to it. To this day I wonder what curse words/combination of them actually was enough to make ten symbols, no spaces.Lilani said:The only one I can remember distinctly is Final Fantasy VII, and all the swear words that were censored as a bunch of symbols.
Hm, the only one I can think of is cocksucker. Though something tells me the translation team wasn't thinking that hard about it. More symbols just meant they were angrierTiamattt said:Rats, someone beat me to it. Barret drops a lot of uncensored "shit" "crap" and "ass" in the game. When AVALANCHE are on the train near the start and they're talking about how they think Cloud didn't make it, Barret says "Shi't!"DarkSeraphim02 said:If you want to count censored swearing, then that'd be most of the stuff Barret said in FF7. I don't consider words like hell or damn to be cursing.
