Best I can say to this hypothetical is "It's just another video game, get over it."

People act like it is to blame for any number of problems, it is just a game that in no way forces its opinion upon other games.

At least I don't recall doing a question to discover just how shitty its competition is :p. "Play 3 MMO's and write a dissertation on how shitty they are for 90k XP!"

Nooooo!!!!!!

Then the socially awkward people would come out of the caves!!

Or maybe that's how the zombie apocalypse starts. They're not really undead, they have just lost all acute motor functions and aare pale from lack of sun!!

People would find something else to do.

They'd move on to a different MMO.

I can't see the genre being eliminated any time soon.
Also, WoW isn't closing any time soon.
What he said. I mean come on, The Matrix On Line lasted for about five years with just a very small number of players... Imagine how long the most popular MMORPG ever is going to last!

In reality. WoW won't die until they don't have the funding or the players to keep it running as high as it used to be. So they'd downscale and downscale and downscale until it can't be downscaled no longer, and then shut it down. Tabula Rasa style. By this point, only a small minority would care. So, y'know. They would do whatever their friends are doing.

However, whilever people keep feeding this money hungry machine. It will only upscale.

I've been thinking... What will happen when the world of warcraft severs are finally closed. I mean at the minute there is about 10 million subscribers i think? And there is a growing majority of them who are raiding set times every other day i think it is. When this virtual time consumer finishes there will be a mass of people with probably wasted talent that will have new oppurtinities. Now, you might think im joking and in a way it sounds silly but in some cases it's true. Imagine if there were no more MMO rpgs What would this vast majority of the gaming community do instead?

What would you do if wow closed tomorrow?

And there was no eve

Im guessing no one plays runescape anymore anyway.

Sorry if there has been a thread similar to this btw
When WoW does finally shut off it's last server, it will be due to everyone moving onto the next great things like Blizzard MMO2 or life. Won't really be that big of a deal at the time.

If it was to shut down tomorrow, there would be millions of confused and/or upset peoples. Half the people would be posting on the Blizzard realms and across the boards (like this one) thier confusion at what's going on. The other half would be posting hate and disrupt. A lot of people would be just fine and would just go on playing a different game or spending time on other activities they've been neglecting. Unfortunately, those are the few among the giant mass though. There would also be some suicides, but I'm not going to get into that.

If MMOs were to all end, forever, tomorrow, then I'd imagine PSN and Live would get flooded with gamers like never before and single-player RPGs like FallOut 3 and The Witcher would be selling out everywhere. And everything I posted above would still be in effect.

And the only influences it would have on me is I wouldn't have future MMOs to possibly consider getting into and would have more time to spend with my WoW-addicted best friend. Might even get an actual non-WoW related conversation out of him also. Nice.

Moving on to the next MMO? For an MMO to die, it needs to lose a lot of its players. WoW has 12 million players...When does numbers reach a very very low number, it will die.

Cancer, Aids and 3 unknown pathogens would cured within 2 weeks of MMO Servers being shut down.
Assuming the average WoW player has the IQ to pull of such a feat.

That's the point of a hypothetical question. You're asking about something that hasn't happened and most likely won't ever happen.
Alright... I answered what would happen.

People would move on.
What else would there be to do?
Riot in the streets?
Actually your probably not thinking about the outcry that would occur, and there could easily be picketing. WoW is probably the biggest MMO out there and it has been some people's introduction to gaming. Unlike most MMOs I think the closing down of WoW would cause more of an uproar than most people think.
Also, I was just pointing out the redundancy of saying the MMO genre and WoW would not be leaving any time soon, since the original question was a "what if" so it's already implied that it hasn't happened.

Well, i could see that happening if WoW was simply closed down (as in today or tomorrow), but i think people would be more understanding if they saw a slow decline, and would realize blizzard needed to abandon the game to stay afloat.

You're right, there would be a lot of unhappy people though.
