When you come to a part in a game that is too difficult, what do you?

I recently came to the end of Transformers: War for Cybertron and found that on hard, the final battle against Trypticon is a bloody nightmare. I ended up putting the game on easy, but decided "no. this game will not beat me" and came back to it a few days ago.

I decided that if i was going to beat it, i would need to become an Autobot. I needed to be as strong as Ironhide, and as fast as bumblebee; i needed to be as intelligent as Ratchet, and i needed to be as Brave as Optimus Prime.

I needed to become the Valentin Seleznyobot. And when i did, i kicked arse.

I often find that getting into character helps me when i come to sections in computer games that seem to be a little too hard for me. I'm interested to know how other gamers tackle the issue.

Depends. First, I always take a break and come back when I'm calm and refreshed. If that doesn't work and it's an RPG, I go level. If I'm playing something like a shooter or RTS, I try a few more times, then consult an online guide to see if there's something I'm missing.

Lower the difficulty or recruit outside aid. i couldnt lower the difficulty from veteren when fighting the sniper in Cod WaW campaign because it would cost me an achievment so i got a friend over to help.

I just try it a couple more times and that's usually enough to get the hang of it. If that doesn't work go level, get better equipment, or something of that nature.

If that's too much effort I just get possessed by a Pharaoh.

I play through it.
I refuse to lower the difficulty, no matter what game I'm playing.

Numerous times in FF13 caused me to rage untill I fractured my hand/wrist, something broke regardless. Thankfully not the controller.

Try it again 2 or 3 times, if I fail I'll give up and come back 2 or 3 months later. If I still can't beat it I'll sell it...

Yeah, putting it down for a minute (or longer) can often help, and sometimes you just need to sit back and look at it from another angle. I find it's always good to save (if possible) before going into that next big boss fight. If it's a game like KOTOR (which I've been playing recently, so this is kinda where I'm coming from here), you can always go back and try to level up a bit or buy some new gear (etc) before tackling it again. For an RTS, I usually keep trying until I'm about ready to break something, then I put it down and do something else until I feel like trying again :p

Also, in a game like KOTOR (again), I find that if I've already completed the game once, and only if I've already completed it at least once, I'll sometimes play around with the cheats when I get into a tight spot. Again, I won't do this unless I've finished it once before, otherwise, I just feel like I can't say that I really completed it.

I try to become less like a character in the game. Take a broad general view of what is going on and look at myself and how I'm playing the game. Maybe I need to take a break and try again later or in extreme cases look for help on the internet. That helps me a lot.

Practice. Practice. Practice. But always sure to understand my mistakes. However, this only really applies to non-RPGs. Find the safe spots, understand patterns, heck eye training can be absolutely valuable in the right genre.

For RPGs, if I'm underleveled, grind to my heart's content. If it's not a problem of level and the enemy isn't completely random, look for problems in your character build(s). If it's an equipment or class problem, switch for something better.

It depends on the game. Level 18 in portal was getting pretty hard, none of the stuff I was trying worked. Then my brother showed me the trick, but it was way too fucking finicky, and some of the solutions I came up with got broken for rather stupid reasons, so I gave up. The problem is it's a puzzle, but then once the puzzle solution is figured out, it shouldn't be tedious to implement.

On the other hand, Geometry Wars is just plain hard, so I come back to it every couple of days and play for 10 minutes to see if I get any better. Occasionally I come close, and eventually I'll nail another achievement with it. That's something I'm fine with.

Try again with every method I can think of, repeat until I can't take it anymore and try again some other day.

This has occurred a few times in Starcraft 2 and Warcraft III, where there's a number of strategies for most situations. Rare is the scenario where I will get destroyed without knowing what I have to do next time to stop it, at least in RTS.

Online, however...

I keep trying, take a break and keep trying. If I'm unable to beat it after a hell of a lot of tries, I'll lower the difficulty. That's my last option though, I'll try everything else before doing that.
