Wait you're talking about that thing where like, Cage the Elephant's Aint no rest (for the wicked) was used in borderlands, and suddenly EVERYONE knew who CtE was and would hear it, right?

Cause if so, I think its cause it just bothers the people who listen the song before its famous, and are fans of the band, that the people who will only know one song like aint no rest and then will constantly talk about it.

Kinda like the people who play Portal (and only the first one) and keep saying the Cake is a Lie, or something like, and completely miss the other gems of the game cause they dont want to play it and think they only need to know the cake is a lie to be cool.

EDIT: for me personally, and most of my friends I know, we dont care how you found out about a band, as long as if you start the conversation abotu them, you can hold it longer then saying (for example, CtE cause thats the only one I know that got really popular in my area) "like, wasnt it awesome how it was used in borderlands?"

I was unaware that this was a big issue. Never the less it strikes me as a variation of the "I was into it before it was cool" mentality.

It's a very good question. Obviously people put songs in games because they WANT you to get to know the song or find more about the artist. And everybody hears a song from somewhere, be it because a guy at a station chose to play it on the radio that day, because your parents like it, because a friend told you about it, or because you happened to be introduced a genre or artist and then go looking for more from it.

I wouldn't have realised I liked doo-wop if I hadn't heard it used in TV and movies. I wouldn't have discovered The Supremes, Franklie Lymon and the Teenagers, The Ink Spots, etc, if it hadn't been used in film, TV, or games, and I never would have realised I like music from that era. I wouldn't have discovered how much I like The Andrews Sisters had someone not pointed out Christina Aguilera was "paying homage to" Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (I knew she was paying tribute to '30s girl groups, I just hadn't known which specific one).

I have never heard of this before as a big deal. But if mocking the ever living sh*t out of someone for never having heard of Sympathy for the Devil or Fortunate Son until Call of Duty makes someone a hipster, then I am a hipster.

So I guess the moral of the story is = if I think you live under a rock, I am a hipster.

Yeah, the whole "I liked them before they were in this video game" mentality is pretty retarded. That being said, I find it sad that some people in today's generation only discovered CCR and the Rolling Stones through a video game. Obviously, individual taste in music is subjective but it's still very surprising.

That being said, the one band I can say I've really gotten in to because of a video game is Faunts (from their song, M4 Part II during the credits of Mass Effect). The sad part of this discovery is that they hail from the city I'm living in right now and I had no idea they existed... derp.

Really, people react like that?

I'm glad games like Brütal Legend came by and covered us all in hot metal love.

In fairness, people thought the same about knowing Fortunate Son from that Vietnam war film it was in. You know, pretty much every single fucking one of them! Was it written in the knowledge that it'd become the war's soundtrack or something?

"Real fans" have this idea that if you didn't know about a band before it was popularised then you can't be a "real fan" like them, whether it be through games, films, TV, anything like that. That sentence works really well if you replace "real fan(s)" with "tosspot(s)".

It?s interesting seeing everyone?s replies, and like I said before, I?ve had my own ideas about why some people make an issue of other people who discover X artist/group or Y song in Z game.

To everyone who has and will reply, thanks.

To be honest, I wasn?t sure if it would even be a good idea to post this to begin with, glad to see I wasn?t a bad idea. But from the replies here, it?s nice to see everyone?s 2 cents on the matter. It?s kind of funny since as someone else pointed out and what I already said in the OP, you can?t know everything, and to be very honest, for all I do know about music, be it songs, artists and so forth, there?s still a whole lot I?ve yet to come across.

The same can be said for pretty much anyone else here.

And again, like what others have said, I find it an opportunity to come across something I either haven?t heard before, or in some cases, had heard some time ago and heard it again, be it one form or another, One example was The High Contrast remix of Eric Prydz?s Pjanoo I heard a year or so (2008) before hearing the original (again) in the trailer for GTA IV the Ballad of Gay Tony, and again in DJ Hero.

And sometimes it?s a video game that may get me either interested or re-interested in a genre after a while.

For my complaints with Need for Speed pro street (or the last few games sans Most Wanted, Shift/Shift 2 and Hot Pursuit 2010 IMHO), one of the few redeeming factors was the soundtrack, and a few particular songs stuck to me, including a Remix of Yelle?s ?A Cause Des garcons? by Riot in Belgium for house/electro house, as well as an introduction to Digitalism? ?Pogo? (later Idealistic in Midnight club Los Angeles trailer), as well as a Guns N Bombs remix of ?Fancy Footwork? by Chromeo and ?Restless? by Unkle.

And I could go on and on myself?

There are of course times I?ve heard X song well before Y game, I personally don?t go on about ?I liked it before it was in Y game? but more like ?I?m Glad it?s in there?, including MSTRKRFT?s ?Work on you? in DiRT 2 and Sebastian?s remix?Testarossa Autodrive? by Kavinsky, and Deadmau5?s remix of ?I?m not alone? by Calvin Harris.

Don?t know what else to say except, again, I wanted to open this thread to see what others think, maybe this thread will keep on going?maybe not?we?ll see.

Later.
